New Mandalorian, Who Dis?

Hi. New person here. I’m not new to telling stories, or being a part of them, but I am new to this format. As a life-long lover of Star Wars and fan of TTRPGs, I stumbled upon the RP world as a way of being able to mere deeply immerse myself in the universe I adore.

Ah. Now that the flowery part is out of the way, we can get down to business. I want to play a Mandalorian, but I have no idea where to place her in the Realm of Chaos. I have a vague backstory/archetype that’s pretty modular (fights w/ two vibro-daggers, is a Scout, left home at 16 w/ her 20-year-old brother to serve as his Scout for a hunting expedition in/near Wild Space, returned home after 5 years in abject failure (brother didn’t even bother going home) only to find something ((death??)) had happened to her parents) and can be slotted into place pretty much anywhere. So. What I’m really asking is “where do I start?”

I believe I know officially building her and joining the Mandalorian Major Faction is the first step, but after that, then what? What threads should I visit? What planet(s) should I go to/be from? What Clan should I have come from/seek to join? This site contains a living, breathing Galaxy, and I want to hear about it from the folks who have been steeped in it.

Heh. Thanks for listening to me ramble. Please, PLEASE don’t troll. I look forward to learning all about the nuances of this wonderful world.

Hey there, welcome to Chaos! For a Mandalorian....I'd suggest looking at the Mandalorian Empire, and join the Discord. Alot of people here are more than happy to help you get settled in. There's alot of good options, and you can always just come up with your own stuff if you'd like in regards to clan or what have you, really no expectations here.

Enjoy yourself!

bg3929 bg3929 I can't really speak on anything that specifically has to do with Mandalorians, I haven't been involved in the stuff related to them for a number of IRL years (I haven't had a character that has been a part of them for a while), but I can give some general suggestions on what to do to get started.

Firstly you'll want (and need) to get a character bio created, I would read over the Character Creation, Role-Play, and General Rules (they aren't very long) just to make sure you know what limitations you'll have both on your character and just to get accustomed with the rules for participating on the forum. Your character bio doesn't need to be super pretty, in fact there's some templates you can copy-and-paste from the character creation rules (or you can make your own if you know your way around bbcode/div, there's also some posted up in the Arts & Design forum that some people have made public but I wouldn't worry too much about glamorizing your bio unless you absolutely want to it isn't necessary or expected of anyone). Just make sure you include at least the information that is in any of the sample templates in the character creation rules at a bare minimum. I would make sure you link that to the account (information on character accounts in the next section below), I'll include a screenshot for that setting (though you already set up flairs so I think you might've already come across this setting).

Secondly (or as a continuation of the above depending on the order in which you want to do this), you'll need an account that uses the name or alias of your character as well as a basic avatar that provides a visual representation of what people should imagine your character appearing like. Don't be intimidated by people (such as myself) with super elaborate avatars and the like, just start off with a basic picture at first (though you're more than welcome to express your artistic capabilities if you want to), you can do this by either making a subaccount or changing the name of your writer account (you can use your writer account for a character, like I am doing, or you can create a sub account for it as well as for any additional characters you want to make). I'll include some screenshots for what either of these options look like, let me know if you need any help finding your account settings.

From there you can look into joining the major factions (or minor ones) which pertain to the Mandalorians (or Black Suns) as Koda Fett Koda Fett mentioned, as well as their discords as you'll be able to discuss ideas and such with members of those groups in real time which'll drastically speed up any character planning, as well as give you an easier route to finding active threads that a given faction might have as most factions tend to have either an active list or a channel where they announce their threads as they go live. This is optional, though, it'll just make things easier for communication and staying in the loop.

Aside from that, though, there's a number of things you can do to immediately jump into threads or create your own. Most people typically do what you're doing in this forum (the looking for group forum) to look for people for thread ideas you already have, or to ask for people to join up with/come up with threads together, so you're already on the right path there. You can, before starting LFG threads, also look around in this forum or in the RP Discussion forum to see if anyone else is either looking for someone to write with (and, of course, offer yourself up for a thread) or if they already have a thread that is going live/already live to see if you can join in. You can also just look into the Open Role-Playing forum and look for the threads with the prefix "Public" (you can also filter for that prefix there, as well, by clicking that prefix in that forum) and those are always open for anyone to join (though you might not want to jump into a really old one or one that looks like it's moving too fast for you until you get comfortable enough knowing what kind of pace you're good with or if such a hypothetical old thread is already "done").

We also have First Reply threads, which are also located in the Open Role-Playing forum but the newest 3 threads are also always shown on the home page of the forum (screenshot below). These are first-come, first-serve, and are only one-on-one - so essentially if someone has replied to them then you'll need to look for another (or start your own) but if they have no replies yet then you're free to jump in if it makes sense for your character (or if you just really want to).

There's honestly a lot of different avenues for you as a new member, and a few steps to take before you start writing (as outlined above), so if you need any additional help feel free to ask!

Thank you so much for this incredible guide! I’ll be sure to put it to good use!

Welcome to the site! And welcome to The Cause brother of iron~

my biggest piece of advice is to avoid trying to stick too close to "canon" or "official" or whatever
while adherence to certain tropes and checking off certain boxes is standard
you should allow yourself some wiggle room for creative freedom
my alt joined the Mando thing going on at the time and it was alot of fun to write
but i also took up residence in Wild Space on a desert planet (Smarteel) and dabbled with the idea of my own clan
so you can make up traditions or rituals or other things that may not line up with traditional mando's
Welcome aboard and good luck :)

The Mandalorian Empire can provide a good place to start and/or stay if you're inclined toward what it means to be a Mandalorian (in various facets) without the pressure of endless war (though that's an opinion). We got threads that go up regularly to give players opportunities to explore their character. Sometimes new opportunities arise to build out and lead for characters too.

In general though, you're free to join any Public Thread or LFG Request on the forum. Even as a member of a faction you aren't limited to only their threads. Though you'll understand if not all factions are friendly with one another IC and like the presence of certain faction members in their space! And you're free to be from any planet with any background. Wholesome and sweet, rotten and neglected, and everything in between. Likewise there are no site-wide Clan Alors. There are splinter groups that hold the same Canon Clan names, and each usually has an Alor. Usually within a faction there is a single Clan and Clan Alor though to keep things tidy. You're usually welcome to join any of them (or make your own custom Clan), and each has their own aims like factions have theirs -- and they don't always align, which can mean good IC drama.

So, the big question is what would you like to explore as a Mandalorian? We even have Forges to make cool armor. Nothing wrong with forging armor made of genuine beskar!
