SETTING INFORMATION
  • Structure Name: New Frontiers Medical Research Centre | Sith-Imperial Black Site "Black Helix"
  • Classification: Research and Development Facility
  • Location: Dromund Kaas I (Dromund Kaas' First Moon)
  • Affiliation: The New Frontiers Institute | The Sith Empire
  • Accessibility: Located on one of Dromund Kaas' two moons, the approximate location is relatively well known, but access is extremely heavily restricted. The official reasoning for this is that the facility contains a number of deadly infectious diseases and must, therefore, maintain a high level of isolation for everyone's safety. Of course, the real reason is that the Sith Empire's worst and brightest work on a number of dastardly projects within its expansive subterranean halls, some of which are vile enough that even the Sith are reluctant to be associated with them.
  • Description: Built into a large crater on Dromund Kaas I is a trio of interconnected ring-like structures, concealing an expansive underground complex. On the rare occasion that a visit is allowed (to keep up public appearances) this visit is always restricted to the overground section, which appears respectable enough. This respectable facade, however, conceals a dark secret: Hidden deep beneath the moon's surface is a top secret research facility in which all kinds of horrifying experiments are conducted.
POINTS OF INTEREST
  • Main Ring: Making up the bulk of the overground complex is the main ring, which is primarily taken up by medical laboratories, storage rooms, conference rooms, and other facilities which could be shown to external observers without revealing the true nature of the facility.
  • Secondary Rings: Intended primarily for habitation, recreation, and storage, the secondary rings are rarely seen by external observers, but are nonetheless designed in such a way as to prevent revealing the facility's dark secret.
  • Shuttle Bay: Located in the centre of the main ring is an expansive shuttle bay, which is the only official entrance to the facility, aside from the rarely used ground entrance. This is where most shipping and passenger transportation to and from the facility is routed, though particularly secretive guests and shipments are handled by the auxiliary hangar.
  • Starfighter Hangars: Hidden in the walls of the crater are two hangars, one for the manned starfighters and one for the SI-TIE/Ds. These hangars also contain a small number of escape craft reserved for the facility's top scientists. They are accessed by underground walkways leading to the subterranean part of the facility.
  • Experimental Weapons Section: Taking up roughly half of the expansive underground laboratories is the Experimental Weapons Section, which is dedicated to developing everything from gruesome bioweapons to lethal nerve gas and vile poisons.
  • New Frontiers Section: Where the Experimental Weapons Section works on external agents intended to affect organics, the New Frontiers section is dedicated to the "improvement" of organic life. From bioengineered monstrosities to more subtle augmentation and new models of inhibitor chips, the New Frontiers does it all, with some of the on-staff bioengineers dabbling in cybernetics as well.
  • Auxilliary Hangar: Concealed over fifty kilometres from the facility itself is a hidden set of hangars, which are large enough to hold four Omicron Shuttles or light freighters at a time. From here, an underground maglev train is responsible for bringing the most incriminating supplies, specimens, and visitors to and from the premises without garnering unwanted attention. To accomplish this, the hangar is located near one of the Sith Empire's many secret listening posts on the moon; a small listening post that Imperial authorities would gladly sacrifice if it meant preserving the secrets of "Black Helix".

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
As the Sith Empire spread across the stars, it became evident that there were projects even they could not acknowledge. Experiments so vile, that they could never be allowed to see the light of day. For this reason, a number of covert laboratories and research facilities were constructed across Sith-Imperial space and beyond, most in secret locations. There were, however, exceptions to that rule.

Hiding in plain sight, the facility that is known as "Black Helix" is located beneath a seemingly respectable medical centre. This isolated scientific institution appears, to all outwards inspection, to be a charitable foundation dedicated to researching rare diseases and genetic disorders in order to develop cures or treatments. Importantly, the "rare diseases" part allegedly includes highly infectious and equally lethal strains, which serves to justify security measures that would otherwise have aroused suspicion in a civilian medical research facility, especially one allegedly run primarily through charitable donations.

This, of course, is nothing but an elaborate ruse to conceal the laboratories of some of the Sith Empire's most depraved minds, with most maintenance and other manual labour tended to by droids to ensure the secrecy of the facility's true nature. Not to mention that the Legionnaires and the handful of pilots stationed in this facility are extensively screened before being allowed entrance, with the bulk of them being recruited from those recorded to have mowed down civilians in the line of duty and slept like babies afterwards; there is, after all, no greater threat to secrecy than a bleeding heart.
