Private Neon Streets

Sophelia's blonde hair was tightly plaited, bound up against her head and concealed beneath her biker's helmet. All her clothing was black and indistinguishable down to her boots. There was nothing to give away who she really was. She'd done underground racing enough times on Tapani to know how to keep her secrets. From her family. From her friends. It was certainly an activity that would be highly frowned upon a noble doing. Probably worse for a jedi. One she was sure her father would ban her from if he was still alive. Perhaps her brother would also ban her from it. But it was the one thing she needed. The one way she knew how to release all that pent up tension from working the clinics, from her studies at the Sanctuary, from what happened on Jakku. From everything that happened on Tapani and the flight from the Sith Covenant.

She felt more at home on her swoopbike than almost any other place. And even though these were new streets to her. A new place. She felt at home wrapped up in the midnight of Theed. The underbelly of Theed. From above, Theed was everything the holos promised—polished marble, golden lights reflecting across quiet canals, the palace standing watch over a world that seemed untouched by the rest of the galaxy.

Below?

That was where the real city lived. Repulsor engines whined beneath ancient stone bridges. Music bled from hidden clubs carved into forgotten aqueducts. Bookies barked odds over the din while mechanics made last-second adjustments with hydrospanners clenched between their teeth. The smell of ozone, burnt coolant, and cheap spice hung thick in the humid night air. A line of swoops waited at the mouth of an abandoned transit tunnel, their engines rumbling like predators eager to be unleashed.

Credits changed hands.

Names didn't.

Soph turned her helmeted head left, then right, sizing up her competition for the night. Bright blue eyes hidden beneath the face mask of her helmet. Her swoop purred beneath her, ready to be let loose. She knew every vibration in the frame, every hitch in the engine, every second it took the throttle to answer. Her gloved hand gave the throttle a teasing twist, the engine answering with a sharp growl.

A promoter climbed atop a rusting cargo crate, floodlights snapping to life overhead. "Midnight Run!" he bellowed, his voice echoing through the tunnel. "Three laps through the undercity. No blasters. No explosives. Everything else..." A grin spread beneath his visor. "...is fair game."

Fair game, huh?

A biker in a zipped up flashy gold jacket, with black tactical pants, boots, and a purple helmet under one arm cocked his head at the words. Isar du Vain wondered if the promoter would feel the same way if he knew what Isar could do.

Then again, this was swoop racing.

Fast.

Dangerous.

Abysmal life expectancy.

But the thrill. The thrill. Nothing like that adrenal rush, except maybe beating on some Jedi.

"Don't all go dying on me," Isar said over the roar of the engines, "some of you still owe me creds."

A biker to his right chuckled.

The former Black Sun enforcer took a long drag on what remained of his death stick before flicking it off into the street, where the emberlit tip smoldered and died. The effects of the death stick trembled through his body, joining with the lingering effects of the half a bottle of Nal Huttan brandy and the two lines of glitterstim for a confection that had his nervous system crackling.

Alive.

He'd see how long he could keep it that way. Existing.

Rolling his neck, joints popping and floral fern tattoos standing out on his magenta hued skin, Isar scanned the crowd one last time, violet eyes half-lidded. Probably wouldn't see half these people at the finish landing. Not in one piece anyway.

Isar slid his helmet over his head. How much good would that really do if he impacted duracrete at 400 kph on a turn? Just a red smear.

The bike between his legs rumbled as he twisted the throttle and revved up.

Show time.

A flash of red made her turn her helmeted head back to the right. Was he...then she saw the hair was darker. Much darker. It wasn't...couldn't have been him. Because he was gone. Dead.

Hands tightened on the bike's handles even as she teetered on the precipice of the deep dark well of emotions that were always there now. But she forced her head forward and watched as the announcer raised his arm with a slug pistol. Thumb flicked on her playlist in her helmet. The music zapping her further away from that well. Forcing her to concentrate on the now.

That's why she loved racing.

It forced her to stay in the present.

Not get lost in the past or worry about the future.

And she had a feeling the flaxen twi'lek next to her would be one to watch out for. Even as she tried not to let her eyes drift back to the zeltron with the gold jacket.

"Racers READY!" The announcer roared even as the crate of rusted boxes shook beneath him. His finger slammed down on the trigger.

BANG!

Soph leaned into the throttle, taking off a half-inch faster than the others as she leaned forward. The back of her helmet had gold lettering with her racer name: Stardust. It glinted back at the others.

The swoop lurched forward under Isar, accelerating to speeds that would cause immediate death on impact almost faster than he could count to two.

Isar focused on not immediately colliding with the others as they went into a sharp turn. His heart raced, pulse pounding. The alcohol and glitterstim made his vision swim for a moment, everything seeming to blur, then it snapped back into focus. Isar let out a breathless laugh from within his helmet as he pulled out of the turn and into a straight away.

Still alive.

Ahead of him, he spotted a racer with the name Stardust painted on the back. The racer moved well. Too well. Someone tried to overtake and almost ended crashing into a nearby pylon.

Isar hunched forward, leaning into the window that ripped around him as his swoop shrieked forward at bone pulping speeds.

“Show me what you got,” he muttered as he moved in and tried to overtake Stardust.

A sound like a rathtir tiger rumbled from behind as gold jacket's bike sidled up next to hers. She risked a glance over. His own reflection would be seen in her helmet. She smiled.

Now this was fun.

Try to keep up,
she thought.

Attention snapped back to the course as the course took a sharp turn, shifting into a narrow tunnel. Shifting her weight far to the left, she rolled the throttle. Nearly off her bike's seat to get that turn in at high speeds. That flaxen twi'lek was also hot behind them. The tunnel was dark and narrow and she found that her bike's frame tapped against golden jacket's. Teeth grit as it narrowed further. Her leg brushed his, her shoulder jostled against him. Against her better judgement, she slammed down on the throttle just as they were spit out into a cathedral-sized cavern.

Only problem was something in their bike frames had tangled them together.

Isar stared back at his own reflection in Stardust’s helmet for a fraction of a second. A heartbeat in time. Then she jostled into him, their bikes jockeying for position each tip just a hand length in front of the other, switching as they fought for control.

Into the turn, Isar leaned with her and then they flew out of the tunnel and back into a massive cavern. Isar tried to pull ahead, but Stardust had locked up their bikes.

“You’re kidding me,” he muttered inside his helmet, hearing his words and his own rapid breathing inside the claustrophobic confines.

Her shoulder and leg jostled against him. Isar threw an elbow at her shoulder.

“Stardust more like Fireball.”

That’s what they were about to be if she kept this up.

Glancing in his rear view, he saw a twi’lek with lekkus flapping pull up behind them. And he had something. Not a blaster but a length of metal and-

“Is that a kriffin’ machete?”

The twi’ek reared back to strike as he tried to pass.

Sophelia Ardemark Sophelia Ardemark

“Hey!” Isar’s shove hit her bony shoulder. Head tilted as she looked down. Seeing where their bikes were hooked. One hand slipped to her waist where she pried off a small plasma-cutter.

A warning in the force.

A glint of light as the machete swung for her unprotected back. She didn’t think. She moved. Hands left the controls of her bike as she hopped behind Isar. Back-to-back.

One hand grabbed his shoulder tightly as she faced the machete-happy twi’lek who was moving to swing at them both now. Her bike shook as it began slowing them down.
She balanced precariously for a moment, hand digging into her pocket for.

There.

A small pouch went sailing through the air as it hit the twi’lek in the face, releasing a cloud of hot pink glitter.

“Hey!”

She had just leaped from her speeder to his own. He could feel her pressing her back to his through the padding of their racing jackets.

Stronger than she looked.

Emotions leaked from her in the Force. Determination. Resilience. Excitement?

Huh.

Glancing at his rearview, he saw the Twi’lek take a face full of glitter and go careening off.

“Nice trick.”

The thought of socking her with another elbow, or gripping her in the Force and hurling her off briefly entered his mind. That would definitely kill her at these speeds. But Isar, for all that they said about him, did not want to be a bad man.

Sometimes…

On occasion…

He tried to do better.

Another schizoid racer came lurching toward them, this one was a Gran who had somehow packed a whole net launcher and was wielding it with one hand. The Gran bleated at them, then fired the net.

Isar sighed in resignation and thrust out a hand. The Force rippled from him, grabbing the netting and shooting it back to the sender. The bike spun out of control and hit a stalactite, bursting into a fireball behind them.

The Zeltron grimaced.

His attempts to do better usually ended in failure.

Soph's azure eyes widened beneath the helmet that disguised her. Now she could feel him in the force after that little stunt. Her own signature tightly bound and hidden. This was dangerous. But she hadn't recognized him from the Academy when she'd seen him earlier. With a rotation and slide of her legs, she released his shoulder and was back straddling her bike.

Using the plasma cutter, she made quick work of their tangle and broke free. A silent salute with her fingers. It gave him that split second to get slightly ahead as she worked her throttle back up. Put that tool back away. Dodge a wreckless Rhodian who tried to pass her from behind only to miss the turn ahead and spin out.

They left the chasm of the abandoned cathedral and were going upward on what looked like an old canal system. Which means they were about to dip out onto the streets of Naboo. She knew the course went back underground. She hadn't thought about having to dodge Theed authorities as well. Hopefully they weren't exposed on the upper level streets for so long.

Night air cooled against the back of her neck as her bike roared into the streets. She swerved, narrowly missing a food truck. Using its bulk to hide her sudden punch in speed.

Never look a gift nexu in the mouth, or whatever they say.

Isar accelerated, bike lurching forward and whipping ahead of Stardust. Leaving her uh. In his dust.

The back of his purple helmet had 'Prince' spelled out in floral, vine lettering. He made sure she got a good view before he slammed forward on the throttle and leaned forward, into the wind whipping past and around him.

Moonlight shone down, illuminating the riders as they moved onto a canal. Isar hunched even further until he knew he had a few seconds lead, bike cutting along the water of the canal. The dark water rippled out in a V behind him, mist spraying up into the air where he passed in a contrail.

Isar laughed, vision still swimming with the effects of two drugs and five shots and a half a handle.

Sitting up straight, he extended his hands to either side and felt the wind tearing at his jacket and his arms while he roared along.

This.

This moment was what it was about.

On top of the fucking galaxy.

Sophelia Ardemark Sophelia Ardemark

Prince, huh.

Keeping low over her bike, she saw him ahead. Arms stretched wide. Prideful were we? Someone was about to get de-throned.

Her bike shot out like a fired slug from that food truck. Water spraying behind her as she zoomed past gold jacket.

Now she grinned.

She could almost imagine she was back on Tapani. Almost imagine the stars above were the same stars. Almost smell that salt in the air.

Even as she heard screams of sirens in the distance. Taking a sharp turn, she dropped back into a canal that disappeared back into the subterranean levels. The finish line was ahead. Soph leaned low, keeping that speed. A glance at her sensor array to see if Prince was catching up.

Water sprayed Isar as he sat there atop his speeder biking, grinning like a madman with his arms extended to either side. Mist clouded his helmet visor and he ran a gloved hand, sweeping it clear of moisture.

"You again."

Isar snorted, then leaned forward into his bike and it lunged forward. He nearly spun out the repulsors going into the turn, engine blaring, redlining as he pushed the accelerator when they moved down into the sublevels.

He could see her just ahead, svelte frame all in black clinging low to her bike.

Confident and reckless.

Grudgingly, he had to admit she knew how to ride.

Behind him an angry Zabrak screamed a curse and took out a vibrosaw, angling for an attack.

"Really?"

Isar pushed the engine to the limit as they dove underground, objects whipping past almost faster than thought. Faster and faster.

Ahead, the finish line.

The nose of his speeder came up just behind Stardust's engine as Isar tried to overtake in the straightaway to the end.

Sophelia Ardemark Sophelia Ardemark

The crowd of misfits and vagrants were screaming as their bikes crossed the finish line. She sensed him coming up. So quickly. But it wasn’t enough for the Prince tonight. Sophelia took the win.

Only by a few inches.

A whoop of pure adrenaline and joy left her mouth and she pumped her fist in the air.

She could already hear the curses and excited murmurs from those who’d bet poorly
And the few who’d taken a chance. She eased her bike to a stop as people crowded around. Other racers began crossing in, too. While others began taking their helmets off, Soph kept hers on. The race warden wandered over and Soph offered him the details to her encrypted-offshore account.

Ripping off his helmet, Isar sucked in a lungful of fresh air and shook his head. Unkempt, tousled hair of the darkest purple streaked with red clung to his forehead. He smoothed it out of his face, then stormed over to Stardust.

"That how you race?" he asked cooly.

Violet eyes looked down his nose and regarded the shorter racer.

The smell of lavender clung to the air around him, thick and cloying.

"A death wish?" he almost sounded impressed.

Almost.

Reaching up absently, he tugged at his earring, jaw tensing, then reached out and poked Stardust in the shoulder.

"Stay on your own bike next time, love."

Sophelia Ardemark Sophelia Ardemark

Even with her helmet closed, she felt that heavy scent of lavender - like a choking cloud. Ugh. A light, indignant sniff. Bemused blonde brows he wouldn't see raised at his onslaught.

And his growing agitation.

He was like an angry baby wampa.

That poke set her off. "Hey," voice slightly muffled before she flipped up the visor. She was still getting a few jostled claps on her back but the crowd that had gathered was beginning to peel off. That flaxen twi'lek was beyond Zeltron boy's shoulder...covered in that pink glitter and glaring both them down.

Bright azure eyes flashed with ire. "If I recall correctly, which I do," one gloved-finger pointed at his chest. "I saved you from getting carved up by a machete."

She pretended to pick off a piece of non-existent lint from the leather of her jacket as she added primly.

"Are you always such a sore loser?"

"Me?" he chuckled, then leaned closer to her.

Beneath the open visor of her helmet stared two eyes, bright and blue.

Isar supposed they would have reminded him of the sky, but he could not recall the last time he'd been up during the day. He ruled the night.

Well.

Except tonight, apparently.

"I'm the worst."

Danger flashed in the depths of his stare, then it was gone.

"And don't try to dazzle me with those baby blues," Isar cocked his stiff neck to the side, stretching and causing the fern-patterned tattoos on his neck to peak up past his high collar. "Doesn't work on me."

Sniffing impishly, Isar looked away from her.

"Besides. I had that Twi'lek handled. And if I hadn't taken care of the Gran they'd still be collecting your pieces from that cave."

Sophelia Ardemark Sophelia Ardemark

The lavender absolutely assaulted her senses as he leaned in closer. She wrinkled her nose. This wasn't the first time she'd dealt with someone like him. Thought he ruled everything. Was the Force's given gift to the verse.

Puh-lease.

"I'm the worst."

"At least you are self-aware," a curt reply.

She did, however, have to remind herself of his little trick with the force. Or rather, he reminded her. And that put her more on edge than anything else. She shifted uncomfortably on her bike but let her eyes keep track of him.

And then the Gran and the Twi'lek. Her eyes rolled skyward and back. "Maybe," she intoned. "Maybe not. Prince. Guess we'll just have to see in the next race. Won't we?" One hand revved up her engine in warning for everyone to stand back. Clear out. It rumbled a low growl getting louder.

The noble gave Prince a pointed look to move aside.

He stared off as she rode away, her engine causing the air to shimmer and distort around her.

"See you around, Stardust."

"LADIES. AND. GENTLEMEEEEEEEEN. It is TIME for the maaaaaain event of the EVENING!"

The announcer's voice blared through the loudspeakers overhead. Hoverdroids with gigantic photoreceptors swarmed in the air, getting good shots of the array of swoop bikes lined up at the race start. Two enormous floating stadium stands on repulsors drifted on either side of the swoop bikes. The benches and skyboxes were packed with fans.

"The DRAGON. BANE. CIRCUIT!" the Rodian announcer pumped his fist as he bellowed into the mic. "Last year we had a new record for track fatalities. What do you think Agrilat, are we going to break it this year?"

The crowd's roar was deafening.

Isar sat on his bike at the starting line and grimaced at the feeling of blood lust radiating from the onlookers. "Nice."

The other bikers were all lined up, but three of them wore silver and black outfits of the same style and winged insignia. The Black Seraphs. The notorious swoop bike gang responsible for setting this event up in the first place.

"Remember the rules, no blasters, no explosives, no excuses. Anything else is fair game."

The bikers nodded.

"Racers..."

The crowd went silent, breath held.

"START."

"YOUR."

"ENGINESSSS!"

It hadn't been hard to make the excuse to go to Corellia. She'd wanted to look at some options for more housing for survivors of the diaspora. And also see if there was any word on any more. There were rumors of prison and labor camps for those who had been unlucky enough to not get out. She'd have to bring this forth to the council. Maybe they'd help her do something about it.

So here she was. Bike and all. Revving the engines again. Black outfit on again with the Stardust helmet. Lots more crowds and coverage, though. Would have to be extra careful about that.

Looking down the line, she saw the familiar jacket and helmet of Prince.

She offered a two-fingered salute when he looked her way. The small smile she wore beneath her helmet hidden. "Hope you're ready to be de-throned again," she spoke into the roar of the engines around her. Noticing a winged-insignia next to her, she frowned. She'd read the reports about this race being one of the most dangerous in the 'verse.

She assumed that meant the course was hard.

But there was a prickle of warning in the force. Something nudging her that something was off. As if she'd pull out now, though. This is what she came here for. Body tensed and coiled as the countdown started. She dragged her eyes away from Prince and those with the insignia inbetween them and looked forward.

BANG

They were off. Her bike ripped forward with the grace and speed of someone who knew what they were doing.

"Try not to die before those blue eyes watch me cross the finish first," Isar called back, earning him a head tilt from a nearby Seraph.

And then they were off, Stardust's speeder accelerating just as fast as Isar's as they lurched forward with the rest.

Somehow, the three Seraphs were faster .

"What the hells?" Isar muttered inside his helmet as the black clad figures moved absurdly fast out of the starting line and into the first stretch of the race.

He'd studied the outline of the circuit before hand. Briefly. Well, studied might be a bit strong. He'd looked at it while smoking spice and thinking about what club he would be going to after. More of a browse. A skim.

At the moment, that decision did not seem so bad. He remembered that they called this section the Long Run, because it was a flat out race across open terrain. A crash would still kill, but there were no obstacles. Total freedom to maneuver.

Which meant that Isar did not have to ride up right beside Stardust.

He did it anyway.

Pulled straight up to her bike in the throng of riders, leaned out way too far across the ground blurring by beneath them, and gave the front of her speeder a good old slap.

"Tag."

Isar throttled up and slid away, putting another rider between them as he snickered to himself. Still hadn't managed to catch up to the three Seraphs. They were way out in front.
