STRENGTHS
- Adaptable Combat Role: The basic platform is widely recognized as one of the galaxy's premier atmospheric drop ships, the MATAT's varied loadouts expands that capability to include ground support, aerial surveillance, medivac, counter-insurgency patrol and interdiction, tactical transport as well as law enforcement support.
- MDL Engineering: Already a well-designed craft the experts at MDL were nevertheless able to improve upon the original design. True to Mandalorian martial philosophy of devastating fire and impregnable armor not only were the weapons and armor augmented but the maneuverability of the craft was able to be slightly improved.
- Heavily Armed: The MAATAT bristles with armaments and is capable of laying down a torrent of supporting fire. With eight separate laser cannon systems, two dismountable repeating blasters, an integral dual missile system and eight wing mounted hard points it is able to produce an offensive a cloud of fire in multiple directions simultaneously.
- Good Tactical Speed: It is able to rapidly deploy throughout the battlefield arena as tactical matters dictate and deliver its payload of troopers quickly and effectively.
- Laser Turret Vulnerability: The two wingtip Composite-Beam Pinpoint Laser Turrets while powerful, are finicky, requiring precise maintenance and are susceptible to damage.
- Limited Cargo Capacity: Optimized to carry troops not cargo. While able to carry some cargo it is not equipped with the standard tie downs a dedicated freighter would have and its side doorways are designed for the fast disembarkation of troops not cargo pallets.
- Large silhouette: In order to increase stability in atmosphere, the MATAT and its progenitor the HAAT/I, had enlarged wings which unfortunately increases its target box. The wings, by design necessity, are also the craft's least armored area making them susceptible to damage which could severly effect the ships performance.
- No Hyperdrive: The MATAT is designed for planetary operations or at most intersystem transport so is not hyperdrive capable making the craft reliant on supporting transport ships for strategic deployment.
DESCRIPTION
In creating ships for the new Protectorate Guard Patrol, MDL's practice heretofore was to obtain hulls or older examples of traditional Mandalorian produced vessels and modernize their systems to contemporary standards for the limited use of the Mandalorian protectors. With this model MDL opted to purchase completed platforms, in this case from the Imperial Legion Corps of Engineers via Aurelian of Vandemar. These units were complete and capable on their own but MDL did replace some of the existing systems with comparable units to better mesh with the present Mandalorian supply chain. But no Mandalorian design firm could resist adding armament and armor so a few weapons were added and the titanium hull armor was augmented with Lomite case hardening which was the main external visual change as the lomite casehardening lightened the grey color of the hull.
Like its close sibling the HATAT, the MATAT is an armored leviathan of the skies serving as both a high-capacity assault dropship and a devastating close-air support platform, engineered to crush resistance before the first boot touches the ground. Its reinforced titanium frame, studded with deflector-shield projectors and layered ballistic plating, allows it to weather punishing anti-air fire. Massive twin turbine engines, housed in armored nacelles, grant it surprising agility for its size, letting it maneuver through various types of terrain.
As a troop carrier it is capable of delivering an entire platoon of Troopers (up to 50 soldiers) in a single drop, alongside light vehicles or heavy weapon teams. Its rear assault ramp and side deployment hatches allow for rapid disembarkation under fire, while magnetic clamps secure speeder bikes or repulsorlift crates for lightning-fast deployment. For airborne insertions, it carries rapid-deployment rappel lines and drop harnesses, enabling non Mandalorians an alternative deployment option
Mounting a bristling array of cannons, heavy missile pods, and wing-mounted Composite-Beam Laser Turrets, it shreds enemy armor, collapses fortified positions, and scours trenches with indiscriminate fury. Its modular weapon hardpoints allow mission-specific loadouts whether it be for close-air support, counter-insurgency, reconnaissance or law enforcement patrol the MATAT can be configured to do the task at hand well.
A dedicated fire-control station in the crew compartment lets a gunner coordinate its arsenal with chilling precision, while advanced threat-tracking systems prioritize targets in real-time. A pintle-mounted heavy repeating blaster has been added at both side doors allowing gunners to lay down suppressing fire on the landing zone and then dismount to provide integral ground support for the infantry.
It is planned to use these new craft to replace the ageing Q-Carriers currently in use and is hoping to be able to sell this platform on the wider market.
