- Do-It-All: The Lycaon is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing it to perform almost any strike craft role efficiently as well as land and fight on the ground.
- Fangs: The Lycaon is very well armed and armored, able to take a beating and give it back with interest.
- Self-Destruct Button: The Lycaon's missile launchers are its weak point, and a direct hit to these can inflict severe damage.
- Elite Few: The Lycaon represents a significant individual investment, and as such these machines are only fielded in small squadrons.
The Lycaon is Helix's first entirely in-house strike craft, utilizing no cannibalized CIS parts. It is intended primarily as a replacement for the ageing and deeply-flawed Condor fighter.
Nonetheless, something of the ancient Vulture Droid's appearance lurks in the sleek, predatory lines of this cutting-edge killing machine. The Vulture's trademark red-eyed stare is replaced with a blank Helglass faceplate, behind which lurks a calculating, murderous intellect.
The Lycaon is designed to operate in almost any environment imaginable, being able to stalk its victims through sky, sea, and void alike.
These machines come in fairly small squadrons, perhaps owing to their high cost. Nonetheless, each is a consummate void duellist, armed and armored to the bulkhead and defended by powerful thermal and photonic shielding.
The Lycaon's primary weapons are a pair of heavy Phosphor Projectors tucked under each wing, which it utilizes with barely-contained relish when in its flight configuration. Coupled with the superb speed and maneuverability provided by a pair of twin Hemlock Otherplasma drives, this is a machine that is easily as quick as it is hard-hitting. For brief periods, it can utilize the Hemlock's overclocking function to reach well beyond its normal limits.
The machine's central "body" holds bleeding-edge Aftershock firing calculation software, along with a quartet of Gossamer missile launchers folded into concealed housings. While unquestionably the fighter's deadliest weapon, these pods are also its soft underbelly. A direct hit to an unfolded pod can inflict a catastrophic munitions cookoff, severely damaging or destroying the fighter outright. As the thermal shielding around the pods must lower briefly for them to fire, this is the opportune moment to take the fighter out.
The Lycaon is intended to be a perfect all-rounder, capable of dogfighting, sustained bombardment, or any other task which one might demand of a fighter. In keeping with the Helix Privateers' love of flexibility over all else, this design choice is anything but surprising.
Thus, it is just fast enough to be considered an interceptor, yet just heavily armed enough to serve as a light bomber craft.
In a dogfight, the Lycaon can be frustratingly difficult to pin down. Heavy thermal shielding coupled with an impact-nullifying Storm Iron outer armor layer create a singularly resilient package, while its speed and position-obscuring holo-shielding ensure that even landing a hit at all is no small challenge.
Like its ancient forbear, the Lycaon is capable of unfolding into a walker configuration for ground operations. In this state, the Falcata phosphor-blasters under each wing swing outwards, becoming a pair of turreted "arms" capable of engaging most land-going targets. While it cannot use its wing-mounted phosphor projectors in this state, its missile launchers remain fully operational, allowing it some limited utility as a light artillery vehicle.
