Life is a Mess

Eyes were closed, and a musty smell filled the room. It smelled like stale whyren’s and cigarette smoke. That could mean only me thing. Tiberius Riggs had spent another night drinking. It was more usual than not, and really only left him with one question. Was he alone, and if not, who had he been with. The reality was that not all drinking meant he was going to wake up with someone next to him. He still patted the sheets.

They were a mess.

Slowly he opened his eyes, usually feeling guilty about this point about another night of drunken philandering. It wasn’t that Tiberius had someone he was seeing, but he was still emotionally so attached to his deceased wife that he was never going to be intimate with anyone. Riggs hated rehearsing the same speech about being a broken man that was not relationship material.

The more awake he become the more aware he was. Someone was in the shower.

Why did he drink to forget. Turning his head over to the nightstand, that he didn’t recognize, he noticed the empty bottle of Whyren’s and glitterstim.

Now he didn’t feel guilty. A smirk tugged at his face. Tiberius should have felt more guilty about this arrangement than waking up with a stranger. This one was all about enabling each other’s pain and coping mechanisms. There was zero intimacy involved, and all of it was purely physical. It shouldn’t have been, but it was.

Sitting up in the bed, Tiberius recognized the room as one of the guest suites on the ships. They were going to be in trouble.

If they got caught.

”Ashtara... please tell me it’s you in that shower...”

Ash allowed herself a deep breath and lowered her black lashes while the warm water pelted against her skin, washing away the lingering scents of stale alcohol and mistakes made.

It was an abnormal occurrence for her to stay the night, or even long enough to access the shower. That only happened during a blackout phase, which was safe to assume had happened, given the state she'd woken up in.

Some, maybe even most, might feel some shame or disgust by the kind of reckless behavior in which she lived her life...but what did she feel by it all? Certainly not guilt, unsurprisingly, nothing. She actively worked against herself, drowning out the slightest bit of feeling with unhealthy coping mechanisms.

The only thing she did feel, was a deep, growing anxiety to leave, wondering exactly how much longer she had to finish washing before her bed companion woke up.

Furiously, Ashtara rubbed her eyes and pressed index fingers hard into the sides of her head where a migraine continued to spread.

*rap rap rap*

“Ughh…” the groan burbled up from her throat, her head pounding in rhythm with his knock.

“Yeah...be out in a sec.” she sighed, beginning to pull long, graceful fingers through her soap-lathered mane.

There went her plan to leave before he woke up and avoid the awkward morning after conversation.

Several minutes later she emerged barefoot, with black tousled hair around her shoulders and a towel wrapped tightly around her bosom.

“...Hey.” she greeted casually, going about to gather up her portion of the clothes strewn around. “There’s some hot water left if you want it.”

This was why morning afters were off limits for them. Ashtara with wet hair and nothing but a towel. For a few seconds Ty just looked at her like she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen, before nodding at her comment about the hot water.

"We are both going to be in plenty hot water if we get caught... This is an executive guest suite," Tiberius said as he looked around the room, and how disheveled it was.

Some of the night was beginning to come back to him. There was a good picture forming in his mind why it was in the state that it was in. Near every inch of the space had been used for something. Which was not uncommon for them. Of course, they were always only together when they drank together. It was bad habit, but that's how it was between them.

Ty hadn't really moved much. His eyes simply followed her around. Every time she bent down to pick up a piece of her clothing his eyes followed along. Yup... she had a great backside. The only problem was the more they spent time together, the more he realized... right... this was why they were not supposed to have morning after conversations.

"Okay... so not to make this any more awkward than it has to be, but... you gonna be mad if I ask you to stick around until I get out of the shower and we get this place cleaned back up? Totally against the rules I know, but... it's that or..."

She knew what could happen if they got caught. Neither of them needed the consequences that would come from fraternizing.

Ashtara looked back over her shoulder at Tiberius with a wicked smirk pulling at her lips. “We sure know how to pick the spot, eh?” This wasn’t a regular occurrence. Back alleys or bathrooms usually did the trick, but neither was this the first time they’d ever ended up in a place they probably shouldn’t have been.

Still, she had no desire to get a citation or get on any of the higher-up's bad side.

Taking her clothes that she’d gathered she laid them out on the dresser and smoothed them, picking off fuzzies and brushing off remnants of glitterstim dust from the uniform while listening to Ty. He was asking her to stay and help him with the mess. Her head tilted, considering her options. Ash didn't want to stay longer than necessary, and for both of them to show up to the mission briefing at the same time? That’d look pretty suspect. She gave a slight shrug, still not looking at him. “I guess that’s a reasonable request since I’m responsible for half of it." her fisted hand pulled the towel tighter against her damp skin. "You gonna keep standing there? I need to get dressed.”

Not dressing in front of him seemed unnecessary given the nature of their relationship, but sober Ash still found herself feeling uncomfortable with that level of vulnerability in front of her fellow squadmate. The staring made it worse.

Once he was gone and she heard the hum of the sonic shower, Ash went about to finish getting ready. After a few moments, she was done, and looked to check that the door to the fresher was still closed.

“See you at the briefing…” she whispered, doing a 'toodles wave' in the air before slipping out the door and heading off in the direction of the training sims.

Really...he shouldn’t have expected anything less from her.

"Oh right..." he said completely off guard.

Ty should not have been distracted, but the fact remained they had broken a morning after rule and not for the first time since black out drunk happened more than it should ever have for both of them. What was different this time was she had come out with nothing but a towel around her, and her long ebony hair cascading around her body. It was a complete oversight, but one that made their arrangement a bit more intimate and personal than what either of them had said they were looking for. It was supposed to be just a casual affair, and only when alcohol was involved, but the sight of her at the moment made him want a go while they were sober.

He hopped off to the shower knowing that they had a briefing that morning. This was his one chance to wash the evidence of their escapades away before they had to report. He sighed, because he knew the minute that he got in the shower she was going to take off. It would be exactly like her, and Ty should have known better than to ask.

Of course that was exactly what had happened, and as she announced her exit, Tiberius cursed. He washed quickly, dressed, and arranged the room in perfect order, as best as he could, before leaving the room. The chronometer on his wrist was telling him that he was running the risk of being late.

He slipped into the room with a minute to spare and found a seat next to Ashtara, they were on the same flight team after all.

"Just remember, I don't get mad... I get even..." he whispered as he leaned in only for her to here. "When you least expect it... I'm so getting you back..."

From the corner of her eye she caught a glimpse of Tiberius trying to slip in unnoticed, she couldn’t help but smirk and straightened in her black uniform as he came to sit beside her, smoothing a few strands of hair back into her tight bun.

Ashtara felt her face flush from his words. She wasn’t surprised when he leaned over to say something in regard to how she’d left him, spouting threats of getting even with her. Through his little spiel, Ashtara kept her dark eyes forward and intent on their flight leader who was still giving them the run-down on today’s exercise, biting down hard on her lip in order to maintain proper composure and not give in to the firm retort forming at the tip of her tongue.

Outside the bed and cockpit, their personalities oftentimes clashed and he easily grated on her nerves, but his flying skills and other...abilities...more than made up for that, and she knew him to be dependable as a wingman. There were times she even found him likable.

She shrugged her shoulder to break the close proximity between them and leaned forward to listen to the rest of the sims objective.

“....you’ll need to get the freighters out past the major planetary body before they can make the jump while avoiding heavy fire from the enemies Defenders and Gunboats…”

She hated his teasing when they were on duty, and Riggs knew it. It was part of the reason he did it. He shouldn’t have made it a life goal to drive the woman insane, after all, they wound up in bed together more nights than not lately. He didn’t drink alone, and when he drank she was on her stuff. It always led to them waking up together, sometimes they remembered and sometimes they didn’t. They were lucky she didn’t have news of a certain kind to be honest.

Outside of the bedroom they seemed like oil as water. The chemistry they had in the sheets didn’t translate outside of them. Most of it was because he intentionally made it that way. Why have anyone suspect they were hopping under the covers by being nice to her. Granted, in the cockpit, he was a sure thing. No matter the differences or the complicated relationship they had, Tiberius wasn’t going to let anything happen to her.

He leaned away to listen to the rest of the briefing.

“....you’ll need to get the freighters out past the major planetary body before they can make the jump while avoiding heavy fire from the enemies Defenders and Gunboats…”

Right so a basic escort job. They’d done a lot of those lately. When they were dismissed Ty came up behind Ashtara.

”So this gonna be as easy as last time, or you think they’ll finally send bigger gun boats?”

He was a cocky pilot, but he was good. The scar... well that was early in his career. Clearly it had been a wake up call, and he recovered from it. He was good, damn good, and it’s why he flew wirh Ashtara. They were quite the team, and no one was even close to their records yet...
