Public Lashes, Lies & Low Frequencies

(Gilded Veil)- Founder / C.E.O.
Sommer gave a short, tired laugh. "Look at us. Survivors of ancient demons and cybernetic assassins, reduced to one awkward-ass family reunion."

Kael's datapad buzzed. He checked it, and frowned.

"Uh… we might have another problem."

Kael handed Sommer the screen.

Footage.

From a camera angle none of them placed. Above the booth. Shadowed. Watching.

The red light was blinking.

Whoever took it saw everything.

Andrew's eyes narrowed as he took the datapad from Sommer, his fingers already dancing across its interface. "This cam's frequency isn't native to the Veil's surveillance system. Someone installed a third-party rig—micro-lensed. Low-light adaptation. Smart angle. They knew exactly what to watch."

Andrew nodded. "I'm already tapping into the hallway cams now. If any shadow moved wrong, I'll find it."

He plugged a neural jack into his wrist port. His pupils dilated slightly, then began flicking as data poured across his HUD.

Sommer crossed her arms. "I want names, and I want them tonight."

Then, the door to the lounge clicked open.

A woman entered. Early thirties, lithe, angular like the Veil's own architecture—tight navy synth-leather dress that glimmered faintly under the lights. Her hair was pinned high, platinum with streaks of burnished gold, and her lips were sharp as her heels.

She scanned the room, then settled her gaze on Sommer.

"I'm looking for my brother," she said coolly. "Duke Verlo. He was seen coming here last week. This is the Gilded Veil, yes?"

Sommer blinked. The tension in her neck returned full-force. "He... was here, yes."

Kael stepped forward before anyone else could speak. "Brenna Verlo," he said smoothly, a grin blooming like silver oil across his face. "Of the Verlo mining cartel, right? I saw your face once on a holo-feed about Sullustan trade reform. Never imagined it would do you justice."

Her brows lifted — a mix of surprise and interest.

"And you are...?"

"Kaelon Virex. House nobody. But if I'd known royalty was stopping by, I'd have ironed a collar."

She smirked. "You didn't answer my question."

"Didn't really need to," Kael said, circling her slowly in a way that drew her attention off the datapad now subtly slipped from view. "But if you're hunting the Duke... well, maybe we can make this a mutual search."

Sommer offered a restrained smile. "Your brother left the Veil, Brenna. I'm not sure where he went after... he dined with us."

Brenna's eyes narrowed. "He didn't go home. He missed two meetings. Which he never does. Then I find he visited this place."

"There a problem with this place?" Kael asked, charming lilt fully engaged now.

"No," Brenna said slowly, her gaze slipping past him to Sommer. "But there is with people who don't answer my calls."

Andrew's voice cut in from behind the booth, dry and flat. "Got it."

They turned.

He stood, eyes cold now. "A repeater relay was installed two floors down. Tapped into the staff vending machine's maintenance panel. The hidden cam piggybacked off a barista menu protocol."
