SPECIAL FEATURES
- Nonlethal firing mode
- Can be fired in-atmosphere to disrupt weather
- Multi-Setting: The Grond can modulate its exact level of lethality on demand, ranging from a disabling shock charge to a lethal plasma-ion blast.
- Stormbringer: The Grond reacts oddly with most planetary ionospheres, and repeat firings can cause violent local weather over a small area.
- Instructions Not Included: The Grond's convoluted workings require a trained operator and a steady hand to be used to any real effect.
Commissioned exclusively for the use of

A strange, arcane-looking weapon, the Grond operates by creating a conductive plasma channel, down which a staggering burst of disruptive ionic energy is sent. The resultant orange-white beam excels against enemy shielding, and, unlike traditional ion cannons, is fully capable of instantly moltenizing many metals on its highest setting.
The Grond is anything but user-friendly, and it takes a practiced and educated operator to best put the weapon to use. Botched calibration may result in the weapon being more or less lethal than desired, failure to fire, or the occasional catastrophic meltdown. In the hands of an expert, however, there are few nastier shipboard weapons in use. A canny user may precisely balance the weapon's ratio of plasma to ionic discharge, allowing them to choose exactly how lethal they'd like the shot in question to be.
The result is a weapon that is just as capable of non-lethally stunning an enemy vessel into submission as it is blasting chunks from its hull. This blends the utility of ion cannons with more lethal shipboard weaponry, allowing the attached vessel a significant degree of tactical flexibility. In general, the firer may opt for a low-damage beam that contains significant shielding/electronic disabling power, a high-damage beam to destroy hulls or ground targets, or something in between.
The Grond can also be used in-atmosphere as a planetary defense battery or bombardment tool, and under these conditions produces a sort of low, keening howl when operated. Most interestingly, a series of ion-heavy barrages directed straight up into the lower atmosphere has been known to create violent localized thunderstorms, perhaps by disruption of the atmosphere's delicate balance.
While of debatable practical use, this quirk can nonetheless subject a given area to incredibly disruptive inclement weather, and is of potential utility in slowing or halting enemy ground advances.
