SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Influenced in part by Mon Calamari shielding systems, the Kirin makes use of four overlapping energy fields that are created from embedded emitters in a vehicle's hull:
    • The outermost layer of the projected shield is based on molecular shielding, allowing the shields to absorb incoming energy weapons such as from a turbolaser or laser cannon or ion weaponry. The absorbed energy is shunted into capacitor banks that an equipped starship or vehicle can use to distribute increased power to other systems or even back into their other shielding layers.
    • The second layer is of the projected shield is a reinforcing particle shield to blunt or deflect kinetic weapons such as from a mass driver or hypervelocity cannon.
    • The third layer is of the projected shield is a reinforcing ray shield to further deflect or mitigate any energy weapons such as from a turbolaser or laser cannon or ion weaponry.
    • The fourth layer is of the projected shield is a second particle shield to further blunt or deflect kinetic weapons such as from a mass driver or hypervelocity cannon.
  • A secondary module of the Kirin also projects shift and relativistic shielding for equipped starships, with this secondary module able to function even if the rest of the shielding system is knocked out to prevent time dilation or particle impacts from dust and other space borne debris.
  • Making use of haysian smelt and diatium in the construction of the system, the Kirin has an enhanced refresh and recharge rate as compared to standard deflector shields due to the energy efficiency of the materials and their conductive capabilities.
STRENGTHS
  • The Kirin makes use of three different types of shielding; molecular, ray, and particle in a four-layered system that provides overlapping fields of defense from enemy fire.
  • The capacitor banks tied into the Kirin system can shunt their stored energy into the other subsystems of an equipped starship or vehicle, giving systems such as the weapons, engines, or even the shields a temporary boost.
  • The Kirin has an enhanced recharge rate, coming back online much faster than other deflector shield systems if they are knocked out or overwhelmed by enemy fire.
WEAKNESSES
  • While it does have solid protection against ion weaponry, such attacks deplete the shields much faster and the energy created from such attacks cannot be stored in the capacitor banks.
  • While the shield emitters of the system are scattered across an equipped starship or vehicle's hull to avoid one large target for an enemy to concentrate on, it does mean that if sections of the equipped ship or vehicle are damaged and the emitters go with them, it can create gaps in the shielding and provide an enemy with an unprotected target until shields can be redistributed.
DESCRIPTION

As part of Aurora Industries' Aeon Program, the designers began work on developing new shielding systems for the company to utilize in their next generation starships. The first of these new systems, the Kirin, was developed in close mimicry of Mon Calamari designs by creating overlapping shield layers and distributing the emitter antennas across the hull rather than in one or two notable targets. The Kirin itself eschews the electromirror of the older Xandret system, instead opting for more traditional shielding types.

The four layers of the Kirin system start with a molecular shielding layer that can absorb enemy fire from turbolasers and laser cannons, shunting the absorbed energy into capacitor banks for use by the crew or pilot of a ship to bolster other systems. The second layer is a reinforced particle shield to blunt and mitigate kinetic based weaponry such as mass drivers or hypervelocity cannons. The third layer is a traditional ray shield to further augment and reinforce the ability of the Kirin to deal with energy based attacks, and the fourth layer is a second particle shield to further increase resistance against kinetic weaponry.

The Kirin also makes use of the conductive capabilities of haysian smelt and diatium, both in the internal system and the capacitor banks, to enhance energy flows and refresh rates to give the shields a rapid recharge time.
