SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Thunderlance Vibroharpoon Guns typically launch 'conventional' harpoon-shaped virboweapons using magnetic coils; creative users may opt for alternative munitions, many of which are non-exhaustively listed below. Please note that not all are available to the average consumer.
    • Thermal Vibroharpoons supplement the expected kinetic force with extreme heat or extreme cold (courtesy of CryoBan); while this has a tendency to increase lethality, it does increase the price, maintenance requirements, and risk of malfunctions.
    • Explosive Vibroharpoons ditch the whole reusability thing in the name of carnage; upon piercing the target, a bardium charge detonates in a display of horrific efficacy. Perfect for those wishing to turn rancors into minced meat, but probably overkill against infantry. Decent at anti-material duty - if the harpoon manages to pierce a vehicle, the contained explosion will almost certainly kill the unfortunate crew.
    • So-called 'Beastmaster Vibroharpoons' incorporate electrify and stun the target - this is perfect if you want to bring the aforementioned rancor in intact, but is less suitable for humanoids; 'penetration by javelin-sized sharp object' is generally not considered 'non-lethal'.
    • Light-Harpoons incorporate lightsaber components for massively increased cutting power and lethality; while blatantly superior in killing power to most other variants, the exotic components needed mean they are effectively Semi-Unique. A few of these have been made by Globex itself, but most are improvised by Force Users who already have access to lightsaber crystals and the necessary facilities.
  • Thunderlance Vibroharpoon Guns have two standard configurations - they either hold up to five additional harpoons in an underslung mount (these may be automatically or manually loaded; varies from weapon to weapon) or they hold an incredibly resilient 'carbon-nanomesh wire' in an underslung container. This wire can be used to reel back a fired harpoon for re-use - users may be pulled forward if the harpoon is stuck.
    • Vibroharpoons can normally free themselves by folding in on themselves a bit moments prior to retraction, but malfunctions can occur.
  • Thunderlance Vibroharpoon Guns can be used as melee weapons if necessary - the tip of a harpoon makes for a vicious bayonet-analogue and can be violently pushed forward up to twenty centimetres by the launch mechanism, only to be retracted just as quickly. Ideal for goring an enemy combatant in close-quarters combat. Light-Harpoons are as deadly as any other lightsaber, but are not exactly finesse weapons.
STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES
  • Whale Ho!: Few armours are designed to withstand a high-velocity harpoon tipped with a vibrogenerator - as an added benefit, penetrating the torso of a foe with a harpoon only to violently yank it back into one's gun as part of the reloading process is, to put it mildly, intimidating.
  • Eccentric: Harpoon Guns are not known for their high ammo capacity or rapid reloading. Especially if 'fleshy bits' clog the mechanisms.
DESCRIPTION
One of the simpler weapons to emerge from Globex's testing sites, the Thunderlance is easily confused for the simple tools still occasionally used by the odd frontiersman; such a misidentification can quickly become fatal. Unlike its primitive counterparts, a Thunderlance launches its projectiles using electromagnetic coils, achieving a massively increased velocity - at the same time, the lethality of its projectiles is equally enhanced.

As a result, the Thunderlance is more than capable of penetrating everything from combat armour to the armoured hide of a rancor. Even vehicles are not safe from the weapon, though a good aim and solid knowledge of the model's weak points are essential when facing armoured targets.

Most soldiers greatly prefer using rocket launchers against such targets if at all possible, but the luxury of choice is often a scarcity in war.
