Private Keep Your Eyes Peeled

The fun part about having soul-vision was that you got to see someone having a nervous breakdown in realtime. It was truly astounding, seeing someone's mental gymnastics and emotional turmoil as they turned over an impossible roadblock. Aadihr's gorgeous kintsugi aura swirled and shifted in a hundred different emotions, but they all wound up at the exact place she was worried they would when she first opened her mouth: anxiety and regret.

In an earlier point in Niysha's life, it would have taken her more than a moment for her to process the absolute absurdity that was the monoamorous mindset. He was involved, so he... couldn't be involved with other people? What kind of insane self-abuse was that? Why would anyone intentionally subject themselves to that kind of life-destroying jealousy?

Fortunately, that Niysha was much younger. That Niysha had already had this conversation a couple of times. She was disappointed - maybe a little hurt? - but when you take your shot, there's a chance that it will miss. It took a moment for her reaction to crack her face, and might've taken a moment more to process that it was a smile of relief. "Oh, Bogan, I was worried there for a second," she began with a half-laugh. "I thought I might've offended your beliefs or something."

Shaking her head, Niysha pulled her jacket together and stuffed her hands in her pockets. "It's cool. We're cool, Aadihr."

Well. Mostly cool. This was another thing Niysha'd had to get used to: some people thought that just turning down someone's advances was an attack, so they tried very hard to couch it in if's. I'd totally be into you if you were this other thing. I would've said yes if you hadn't had the misfortune of just existing in this other way. It was clear - and probably not surprising - that Aadihr hadn't had a lot of experience with being asked out. For a bit there, Niysha felt like he'd just confessed to having a severe illness or stealing a car.

"I took my shot and missed. No harm, no foul." Her smile was easy, and her aura was barely dented. Hopefully, Niysha mused, that would be enough to put him at ease. "So let's go for caff sometime. Platonically. Just a Jedi and a Sith having coffee. Not a date."

Aadihr let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. The force–wrapped flinch instinct faded

It wasn’t graceful. Not even a little. Just a rough, relieved sigh that escaped him. He pressed a hand over his face for a second, composed himself, and then gave a small, sheepish laugh.

“Wow, uh, you really took that like a champion,” he murmured, finally lowering the hand again. “I was ready for...” A flick of the wrist. “I don’t even know what. But not... that.”

He smiled, though it was tired. The kind of tired that didn’t come from the sleeplessness.
"You embarrassed yourself."
"You overcorrected,"
"You panicked."

“You should have known better.”
“You don’t get to freeze like a stupid little boy and expect the galaxy to applaud you for trying.”
He shook his head—the old reflex again, as if grounding himself might muffle the voice. Fifth time.“Sorry,” he said, quieter now. “For the floundering. I was just..."

He shook his head again. Sixth time. Still couldn't quite name it.

“I didn’t know how to respond. Thank you, I mean. For not..."
For not what? Attacking him at the first sign of disappointment? Why would she even...
"...again"
"Try again!"
"Get up."
"Again!"

He rubbed his thumb against the edge of his staff. A tactile habit. Nervous, not ashamed. No longer running.

“But thank you. For making it easy to breathe again. For not... making this weird.” A soft huff of amusement escaped him.

"So let's go for caff sometime. Platonically. Just a Jedi and a Sith having coffee. Not a date."

He gave her a slight nod of his head in agreement, his aura flickering back towards a steadier center.

“Yeah. I’d like that.”
No quips, no metaphor.
His wit was slower to come out if its shell.

“I came out here expecting to leave with a few fresh wounds and new enemies. Meeting you was a pleasant surprise.”

He turned his attention outward again—letting the air wash across his face, silent for a beat longer. Still smoothing over the lingering tension. Still pressing down the voice that refused to let him feel capable of handling anything right. He’d fought worse.

“Let me know when you want to grab that caf. I promise I won’t lose all higher brain function next time.”

Another speeder roared past.

“...No promises on the time after that though.”
