Karin's Dead

Diana Mordin scanned the skies of Cato Neimodia with listless almost dead eyes. The small sheen they had to them had faded slightly, and dark circles made their way around the lower rim of her eye sockets. She was tired. The Jedi Knight had not slept for weeks on end, having been haunted by visions of Daella Apparine executing a Sith in cold blood. Of course she had not seen the actual act, but she had seen the after effects.

She knew what had happened, Daella had ended a Sith's life.

Of course it was rather hypostritical to call Daella a monster, she was not one after all. Diana herself had ended a Sith's life without a second thought, this however seemed different. This Sith...she had been different than Velok. Velok had destroyed not one but two worlds, killed countless Jedi, murdered her friends. This Sith...the one that Daella had killed was different. Diana was sure that she had been a murderer and perhaps even a bad person, but had she destroyed entire planets? Had she been completely beyond redemption?

Diana had did not know of course, and it was this question that haunted her even now.

She had come here to Cato Neimodia to settle some thoughts in her mind, to answer a question and full fill a duty she felt she had picked up upon looting Karin Dorn's corpse. When she had searched the plant woman among finding a map, a ring, and a tuba Diana had also found a simple holo-display. The picture had been of a young girl, blonde and with a cute chubby little face. Diana had quickly surmised from the photo itself that the girl had been Karin's daughter. Upon searching the woman's corpse further and using her gift in psychometry to begin to tracking her query Diana had found Evelynn's former home. From there it had been a simply matter to track the girls path, eventually finding out that she had recently come to Cato Neimodia.

So now Diana searched for the girl among the ruins of the old Jedi Temple, which had recently become a breeding ground for some of the...stranger beasts of the planet.

Cato Neimoidia was certainly one of the more interesting planets she had visited so far.

Spending sixteen years of her life cooped up on Dantooine had given her the thirst for travel, to explore the vast galaxy that lay ahead of her with glee and child-like curiosity. Not to mention the local fauna. I suppose an important aspect of beast mastery would have to involve the inclusion of beasts.

She sat cross-legged on the ground in the ruins.

This must have once been a grand hall, the roof high and crumbling, beams of light filtered down through the holes that Mother Nature had poked in the roof. It was church-like it nature, it's rafters housing a particular kind of creature that usually found its nests in the forests below. The Neimoidian Kreehawk.

The bird was as big as her, but thankfully it was not hostile.

This was in part thanks to the calming atmosphere that came from the girl. Admittedly she was still learning, but being in the serene hall of a former temple certainly helped. Chomp lay at her side, as peaceful as punch, simply content to lay at his master's side while she observed the creature above. Silently she toyed with the concept of trying to control it.

That was until Chomp stood up, his nose sensing the change in the air. They were not alone. He padded up to the entrance of the hall, no aggression but simply wary.

Evelynn remained seated, still trying to keep her concentration on a calming atmosphere. Convinced that whoever approached them was not a nefarious being she called out, “Hello?”

Diana moved through the temple with practiced speed, stepping through the halls and room's as though she had a map out in front of her. She knew the temples ruins of Cato Neimodia well, it was her favorite little home away from him. Perhaps it was fate that the girl would come here, or perhaps it was simply a coincidence. It was hard to tell when one was being influenced by the force, it was like being led by the nose.

“Hello?”

She heard the word echo throughout the temple, the massive empty chambers carrying the sound quite easily. Diana frowned slightly, obviously not recognizing the voice. Still, it sounded rather innocent so she decided to risk it.

Slowly with extreme caution Diana approached the great hall, her footsteps beginning to resound. Before she saw the girl she saw something else within the hall, a Kath Hound. Immediately her eyebrows perked up and her lightsaber hilt came to her palm. Kath Hounds were not native to this world, and more often than not they were aggressive. “Easy boy.”

Diana spoke already assuming that the creature was male. She wearily walked closer to it, trying to be an nonthreatening as possible, not even noticing Evelynn.

Evelynn often forgot that most people were taken aback by seeing a horned Kath Hound just wandering around on planets they weren't native to. So used to her companion that Chomp felt more like an extension of herself rather than a separate being. Which is also why the girl was so alarmed when she saw that the woman had her lightsaber hilt out. Her eyes widened at the very sight!

Chomp, to me.

The kath hound turned around, forgetting any interest in the strange new woman. He may have detected her burden through extremely subtle odours but it was hostility that he wanted to sniff out. He trotted back to Evelynn happy enough that this woman meant his master no strange harm.

“I'm sorry,” she called out to the woman, “he's with me. He won't hurt you, I promise,” she said with a pleasant smile, Chomp resuming his place by her side.

“It's so beautiful in here,” she mused, half to herself, half to the other woman.

Diana stared at the woman for a few seconds, having been quite startled by her presence and voice. The Kath Hound seemed to have lost any and all interest in her, which to the Jedi was good news. The Horned Kath Hounds of Dantooine were not the friendliest of creatures and she would rather not fight such a thing if she did not have to.

Slowly Diana stepped up to the girl, observing her for a few moment when a realization crossed her mind. This was the girl she was looking for! This was Evelynn!

A look of divine excitement crossed Diana's face for a split second. On a planet like this in a galaxy this big it was almost impossible to track down just one person, but she had done it. A smile crossed Diana's face, and then it immediately disappeared as she remembered WHY she had been searching for Evelynn Dorn. Her task was not a happy one.

Slowly she approached the girl “Yes, it is.”

“This temple was destroyed during something known as the Clone Wars, nearly a thousand years ago now.” Diana walked closer to the girl standing alongside her in silence for a few minutes. “May I ask what you're doing here?”

The Clone Wars.

During her studies aboard Soliael's ship she had encountered this topic. In her typical naivety she poured over the detail of each battle with great sadness and no comprehension for war. This talk of objectives, morale and victory washed over her with great apathy. For she only saw loss, of brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, mothers and fathers.

The scars left upon great buildings such a this temple more of a monument than any statue erected.

“Look,” she whispered, pointing up to the rafters. The Nemimoidian kreehawk that nested there, knowing that it was being observed fully-expanded its wings. Evelynn found that out of all the species in the galaxy that those of the avian persuasion were the most prideful. Although that kind of bird could be aggressive she doubted that it would attack the three of them alone.

“To explore,” she said, finally answering the woman's question, “to discover, to learn. To find the wonders of this world and to capture its beauty in my mind.” Funny how she had more confidence in speaking in such a serene environment. Empowered by the calm.

She did not ask the other woman of her motives for being here, assuming that one needed no reason to just sit and marvel.

Diana was wounded slightly as she thought about what she was about to do to this girl. She was happy clearly, exploring the galaxy and wandering around. She wondered if she even knew that her Mother had been a Sith, that she had been evil beyond all belief and had fallen tot he darkside of the force. The Jedi could tell that the girl was force sensitive, though telling whether or not she was trained was far more difficult. She frowned slightly, and then looked at the strange creature in the rafters.

“I see.” Diana said quietly with an expression of neutrality forming on her face. She would have to broach this carefully. “What is your name?”

She already knew the answer to that, it was inscribed on the bottom of the holo-projector in fancy lettering. Whatever Karin Dorn had done she had valued her daughter enough ot keep such a treasured thing on her at all times.

Diana frowned, and waited for her answer.

“It's Evelynn,” she replied before pausing. Since finding out that her mother had been a powerful Sith Sorceress she took great care in who she revealed her surname to. No matter how Dorns there were in the surname, it only took one person to make a connection, one person that might have been wronged or hurt by her mother and the girl had no wish to be the eye for an eye.

There was a slight feeling of uneasiness that began to lurk in the pit of her stomach, whether or not it was radiating from this woman was yet to be seen.

“Evelynn Dorn,” she sighed, her honesty betraying her and not for the first time.

“I must enquire,” she began hesitantly, beginning to wonder what, or perhaps who this woman had come here for. Certainly not the kreehawks it would seem. “Who are you, and why are you here?”

“I am Jedi Knight Diana Moridena.” Her voice were quite succinct and to the point, she had no fear of revealing who she was. She was in fact quite famous all over the republic for her slaying of Velok and her engagements with the Black Sun over Nar Shaddaa. She had garnered quite a reputation as a great warrior and somewhat of a militant Jedi, though ironically both were in her opinion untrue.

“And I am here for you Evelynn.” That probably could not have sounded more creepy than it did, but it was the truth. Diana was here to reveal a harsh awful truth to this innocent girl, and she would do it without hesitiation. News of death was like a band-aid, best torn off hard and fast. “Do you know who your mother is?”

This must have seemed rather strange to the girl. A random Jedi she did not know coming to her on a random world asking questions about her mother. Diana frowned slightly, knowing that she would not react well to the same situation.

The words Jedi Knight caused a tremble within the girl's mind, given that thoughts of her mother had just been there prior there wasn't a fantastic connection to made, but still, she could have been wrong.

Or perhaps not.

Every time the woman spoke two and two were coming closer. A Jedi Knight, here for her, asking questions about her mother. The pieces of a painful puzzle were coming together, no, she didn't want to know. Had she been apprehended by the Republic? Committed some atrocity so repulsive? Was she dead?

The predatory bird up in the rafters began to rustle, puffing it's feathers out in an act of aggression. The atmosphere of the room was changing, and the creature could feel it.

“Y-yes,” she stammered, the confidence and calm from before leaving her behind, “I know who she is,” the girl paused, taking in a breath that wavered so, “and I know what she is.”

The girl wanted to just get up and run, right there, without hearing any more of the Jedi's words. She wanted to turn around and tell her that the Sith Master Karin Dorn was not a woman that she knew, a vile woman who in no way shape or form resembled her mother. But she couldn't, she had to know.

“Why are you here?” Evelynn reiterated softly, a sheen forming around her eyes

Diana stopped for a second, turning to the girl and contemplating her. She was not quite sure what to say to her, or how to break the news. She had never told anyone that their mother was dead before. Of course she had delivered the news of death many times, but this was family, it was different, and more so it was something she did not know. Diana had grown up within the Jedi Order, she had only meant her parents recently on Kiffu, they were hardly close to her however, at least not yet.

She did enjoy being with them, and speaking with them.

Perhaps it was different for Evelynn. She knew that her mother was a Sith Lord, she knew she was evil. Did she still love her the same way as if she wasn't? Diana had no idea, she could not think of such a thing happening to her, but then again her parents were not force sensitive.

“I've come to tell you...” She paused for a moment, cringing slightly at the words she had to say. “That your mother is dead.”

She didn't know how else to put it, and her voice was a mix of sadness, pity, and extreme distress, her eyes filled with a sort of melancholy.

Before the Jedi even spoke, Evelynn Dorn knew what was coming, she knew that out of all the scenarios she had conjured in her head previously that there was only one true outcome.

It did nothing to soften the blow.

Evelynn recalled her first brush with mortality in life. She must have been around five or six at the time. It all started with a nightmare, the details of said dream had long since faded but the point was clear, in her nightmare her mother Karin Dorn had died. The little girl woke up, and she cried and she cried. To her side her mother ran, hushing, soothing, holding.

Her very first fear.

It never really left. From time to time she often considered what she would do if her only parent succumbed to mortality. Evelynn never found an answer for that, in her mind she would cry for her to die instead, that she couldn't bear the concept of watching a body be lowered into the ground. No, take me instead. I need you.

I love you.

Initially she just sat there, the tears beginning to slowly trickle down her cheeks and drip off of her chin. Chomp caught the grief and glanced up at his friend, unable to comprehend why she had suddenly been filled with such pain. She trembled silently, the dripping of her tears onto the ground quickened as they began to stream.

The Kath Hound immediately got up and circled around her, stopping right in front of her face. Gently, he nudged Evelynn's chin with his snout, to which she immediately reacted by fracturing. A disgusting, anguished sob tore out of that girl as she thrust her face into her friend's muzzle.

There she just weeped, back arched and convulsing between panicked gasps for breath.

Diana opened her eyes suddenly as Evelynn began to cry full force. For the first few minutes she found herself standing absolutely still like a statue, unsure of how to respond or what she was supposed to do in this situation. Of course part of her had been expecting this the entire time but another part of her had not, after all such emotional reaction was entirely unbecoming of a Jedi and most of the death news she had delivered had been to other Jedi.

So for the first two minutes Diana simply stood beside Evelynn, shrouded in awkwardness.

Finally after a minute or two of a wall full of awkward Diana extended an arm towards Evelynn. In an effort to comfort her Diana patted Evelynn on the back with a hand, oddly rubbing her back in a soothing motion that most would consider completely inappropriate for the current moment and was somehow oddly sexual.

“There there...don't be cry.” Diana's response to Evelynns crying was odd, but about what one would expect from an awkward teenager.

The kreehawk spread those glorious wings and took off through one of the many holes in the ceiling. Perhaps to hunt, or maybe to just to avoid the tidal wave of crushing sorrow that threatened to engulf it.

She could have sat there for an eternity, misery pouring out of every single pore. Just a girl and her hound. Nothing else. Darkness could have taken them both and they wouldn't have noticed. Unfortunately, there was another there and threads have to progress somehow.

Evelynn had scarcely noticed the other woman's touch, the Jedi's comprehension of sympathy and what to do in these kinds of situations seemed to be severely lacking, but then she spoke.

No.

The young girl's head reared up so swiftly. “Why!?” she sobbed with heaping teaspoons of turbulence in her voice. The fact that Diana Moridena went full retard and actually said don't be cry was ignored. Not how. Save that gory kind of story for a little bit later.

No. No. Why was right. Why death? No.

Diana didn't know how to answer Evelynn for a few minutes, she wanted to tell the girl the utter truth, that her mother had been a Sith, but Diana didn't really know much about the woman. Karin had been a Sith, from her aura that had been more than evident, but truthfully Diana did not know of any of Karin Dorn's evil acts. The fact that she had been Sith had been more than enough justification for Daella to behead her, Diana in her infinite naivety had never even given it a second thought.

“She was Sith.” Were the words that finally spilled out of Diana's mouth. “A fellow Jedi and I were on a Mission to Dantooine...and she attacked us.”

Without even realizing it Diana had just revealed to the girl that in part she was responsible for her mothers death, that she was the origin of her current sorrow. Of course in her mind she could never be completely in the wrong, after all Karin was Sith and in the end deserved either death or salvation...though of course Diana hadn't heard Karin beg for the latter.

Well that was a silly old thing to reveal, wasn't it?

As soon as Diana finished her sentence the atmosphere of the hall took a nosedive, before there had been perfect calm, washed away by the waves of grief and pain but now too that had changed, the fury of Evelynn Dorn was on the horizon and wasn't that just such a novel concept.

Slowly, the kath hound known as Chomp turned around, there were a few seconds where the air hung thick, punctuated by the sniffs of a heartbroken girl, the beast stared at the Jedi.

“What did she do to deserve death?!”

Her hound began to circle the Jedi.

“Wearing a different set of robes from you?!”

The fragile girl got to her feet, and stared Jedi Knight Diana Moridena right in the eyes. Gone was the timid girl who was often too nervous to say anything other than sorry, instead there stood a mass of anguish blinking away tears with bloodshot eyes. She snapped up a finger, pointing at the other woman in pure accusation.

'TELL ME HER CRIMES!”

Diana took a few steps back from the blonde girl now, sensing the anger grow within her. Her yells were loud and almost shrill, like a banshee's wail. She frowned slightly and began to grip her lightsaber tighter and tighter, her knuckles eventually becoming white. She did not fear this girl, but instead feared what could happen.

The Jedi noticed the hand beginning to circle her, and a frown appeared on her lips. She did not want to fight the hound...she didn't want to fight no matter what.

“I..I.” Diana didn't know the answer to Evelynn question, she had never bothered to find out. “She attacked us.”

Her words rang somewhat empty as Chomp walked around her getting closer and closer. He could sense the girls anger, feel her becoming dark. The Jedi gripped her lightsaber hilt tightly, ready to defend herself.

“Please, calm down. We can talk this through.” Diana spoke quickly, trying to be as diplomatic as possible.

As the young girl's rage began to build, she took a few steps towards the Jedi. If you knew what Evelynn Dorn was like on a regular day then this was a startling metamorphosis. Of course, on the other hand, the Jedi had just revealed the she had played part in her mother's death, her mother, who she had only known as her parent and not as a Sith.

“Talk?” she spat at Diana, Chomp beginning to growl slightly as he continued to circle the woman. Feral friends forever.

“Did you even try to talk to my mother?” she asked with venom in her tones, the young woman already reckoned that she already knew the answer to that question. Despite the fact that she evidently didn't know anything about her own mother's life, Evelynn knew what kind of woman she was. Karin Dorn would preach to her the importance of using your voice and not violence. The thought of her mother charging into a fight without first trying to negotiate seemed wrong.

“Did you enjoy cutting her down?!”

The kath hound snapped at Diana, all teeth, slobber and tusks. Just bringing it to the boil now. On the bright side I can imagine that if Daella had gone to deliver the news instead that I'd have two decapitated characters by now. People to see, places to be, heretics to burn.

“Indulge me! WHAT IS THERE LEFT TO DISCUSS!?”

Diana was stunned, completely unable to say anything. She had no response. Of course she had not tried to speak with Karin, the woman had been mad, angry, furious at the time. The Jedi looked back, thinking about the events that had happened on Dantooine. In hindsight Diana now understood why Karin had been so angry, the woman had though Evelynn had been taken by the Jedi, a fact that Diana now saw.

“I...” She couldn't speak, her mind became flubber. “Yes. I tried. I tried speaking to her.”

She lied, it was the only thing that came to mind. Even Jedi were not infallible, especially ones that were eighteen year old girls. She could do nothing but lie Evelynn, to tell the girl a story about what had happened. Perhaps it would bring her some peace in the end.

Her lie however was quickly seen through. The Hound to Diana's side let out a growl and a bark, as if he were a lie detector. Chomp pounded on Diana as though she were a steak.

Within then blink of an eye the massive Kath Hound was upon the Jedi. She drew her blade Tyrfing and stuck the blunt end in the creatures mouth to stop it from biting her face off, holding in place. “Please!”

She plead with Evelynn to not fight her.

Lovable pet and lie detector! All rolled into one handy creature. Get your kath hound at your local exotic pet dealer today! Or you could rob a hutt, either or. Keep your option open, you know?

When Chomp lunged, Evelynn took a step towards the Jedi, her hand moving slowly towards her curved lightsaber hilt. Never before had she considered that she would need her weapon, it hung there at her side like the proverbial big red button, the last gasp tactic, the nuke (although for clarification Evelynn Dorn is not a nuke). OR MAYBE SHE IS.

The girl was clearly livid. “Please?” she repeated, tears shimmering in her eyes, “Why do you deserve mercy?”

The lightsaber looked peculiar in her hand, where she was soft and light, the weapon was sharp and dark but yet it fit, the hilt looked as if it had been sculpted for her thin fingers and delicate touch. Indeed it was a very special blade, almost too special for the mousy girl of such small stature.

Chomp withdrew from his current assault and returned to his Master's side, he circled around the girl's legs once before stopping in front of her: her shield. The lightsaber sprang to life with that snap-hiss, the blade was a deep orange, menacing in design: her sword.

“How can bestow upon yourself the power to decide who lives and who dies?! You are not just! It is not your decision to make!”

She felt her fury, as forming a snowball the girl gathered her rage, felt it in a ball that sat upon her heart. Evelynn raised her unarmed hand at the Jedi. Travelling down her arm, her anger emerged from her hand in the form of a force blast, or maybe it was a force push on steroids. It's hard to tell, she's kinda mad right now, if you haven't noticed.

“HOW IS THAT FAIR?!”
