Kaelan Reiss
- BACKGROUND
-
AN EMPIRE
The name of Kaelan Reiss originally belonged to a man decades ago; a man who served as a deep cover double agent for the erstwhile ‘New Imperial Order’ against the Eternal Empire. Going by the name ‘Cirrus’, he was part of the Eternal Empire’s Intelligence Security Service, known as Blackwatch. Cirrus engaged in several active and passive covert actions for Blackwatch, including active surveillance and attempted assassinations of officials within the Elysium Empire and Galactic Alliance. Unfortunately, the original Kaelan Reiss would fall silent with his NIO handlers due to being killed in action during the Eternal Empire’s descent into unrest and eventual dissolution.
That left a young boy, also named Kaelan, fatherless in the New Imperial capital world of Bastion. With his father’s passing while he himself was at the fresh age of three, this younger Kaelan never took to the nickname of ‘junior’ due to his father’s absence in his life. Although his mother was a very loving woman, who gave of herself constantly to give her son a better life - Kaelan was restless in his youth and adolescence. He was always known to find trouble, which did little to endear him among school authorities and law enforcement. A string of petty juvenile crimes had led to jail time for the young Kaelan, beginning a downward spiral to grand theft auto and a general life of heartbreak for his mother.
He was eventually faced with a keystone decision in his life; go to prison, or enter the army via the Penal Legion. Needless to say, he chose the latter. As fate would have it, that choice would be the first good one he made in his life. The Imperial Army’s Penal Legion was not an institution meant to be easy; in fact, it was meant to grind the unruly down so they could be built back up from nothing into something of worth.
At first, Kaelan resisted efforts to grind him down, getting in more fistfights with his platoon sergeants than with the enemy at first. But over time, the unyielding discipline of the Imperial Army won out, and through trial and error - the young boy began growing into a man. He caught the eye of several of his superiors, and began excelling in the life of a soldier so much so that he was marked for advancement into the stormtrooper corps’ training program. But several within the ISB who possessed knowledge of who his father was, had other plans.
LEGACY
Before full induction within the Stormtrooper Corps’ training program, the ISB reached out with yet another fateful opportunity; to learn of the unknown legacy his father left behind, and to pursue a career that could actually make a difference. Up to that point in his life, he had always assumed his father was some deadbeat walking around Bastion, clueless as to what his son even looked like. But as the agents who made contact with him progressively revealed non-classified information, he found himself drawn as much to the mystique about the man he never knew, as he was to the life of intrigue he too could have.
That choice was more or less made for him, with the collapse of the Empire. The Central Government was powerless to staunch the collapse, as multiple worlds declared independence from Imperial rule, and rivaling warlords rose up to claim their portion of what remained. He owed his survival to the contact agent who recruited him, which served as tacit acceptance of their offer to join the ISB - or the remnant that existed throughout the collapse. Kaelan would learn and serve under the Imperial Remnant of
Ignacious Korvan
, who himself strove to maintain some level of order and stability in his own corner of the Empire that was.
Kaelan’s induction in the world of espionage may have been unorthodox compared to those who preceded him, but in many ways it perfectly catered to the chaotic lifestyle of his youth. He learned on the job, alongside his mentor; the very same agent who recruited him, until he eventually grew into the shoes he needed to fill. Kaelan would eventually find himself working alongside
Sabine Korvan
, quickly making a name for himself within the Korvan Remnant, and later the Dark Empire as a very efficient, calculating, and decisive operative.
During operations preceding the invasion of Empress Teta, Kaelan’s cell would be all but destroyed due to a compromise, leading to the disappearance of Sabine, and the death of several others within the cell. In the events that would follow, including the death of Ignacious Korvan himself, Kaelan would remove himself from the service of the Dark Empire and its variation of the ISB, starting with the theft of his personnel files and the corruption of the master copy. For all intents and purposes, Kaelan Reiss never existed within the Dark Empire’s ISB database, yet in place of the corrupted files - he left a backdoor within their network, under an unobtrusive alias that would go undetected for months. Long enough for Kaelan to steal a very large cache of sensitive data; data that he would use to jumpstart the next chapter of his life.
FREEDOM
After spending a few years living a life on the run, in the event someone decided to chase after him despite his thorough efforts to erase his trail - Kaelan would set up shop on the Smuggler’s Moon. At first, he leveraged his skills in espionage to become a data broker of sorts - selling some of the sensitive information he had stolen from the Dark Empire to those with the credits to buy them. As he forged connections within the criminal underworld, he was introduced to a trade that would utilize even more of the skills honed within him throughout his life - bounty hunting.
Through a series of complications surrounding some intel he sold to a Mandalorian Bounty Hunter, Kaelan became wrapped up in aiding the warrior in his collection of a bounty. Though not a Mandalorian himself, Kaelan had forged a bond of sorts with the warrior - impressing the Bounty Hunter enough for him to offer Kaelan a place on his ship. The two would form a partnership, traveling the galaxy collecting bounties and living fast and loose at the fringes of civilization...
...until the Mandalorian’s untimely death. The warrior was older than Kaelan - much older in fact. In a way, the warrior had become something of a father-figure to the Imperial, providing a level of male approval and wisdom that he had thus far lacked in his life. While not developing any interest to take on the life of a Mandalorian nor live by their creed, Kaelan returned the warrior’s body to his clan - a singular act of humanity in an otherwise hard-as-nails man. After doing so, Kaelan would strike out again on his own - this time with his late-companion’s ship, and some gear from his few years in the life of a Bounty Hunter; and once again forge a path for himself in this galaxy.
Or die trying.
- PERSONALITY
-
Kaelan chooses to go by his last name ‘Reiss’ as his primary form of address, undoubtedly as a holdover from his life in the military. The stereotype of a bounty hunter is that of a strong, silent type - more concerned with shooting first and asking questions later. Instead, Reiss is undoubtedly a chameleon. He ‘cleans up well’ when he has to, yet carries himself with a casual air; appearing as though he belongs within a seedy cantina on a backwater planet as much as he would belong in the hustle and bustle of Coruscant. He has an easy smile that can draw people in, and possesses great skill at developing a rapport with others over a very short period of time. Yet despite his ability to present equal parts scoundrel and professional, he is a stone cold killer. His eyes possess a predatory edge to them when under a contract, as if he is looking ‘through’ the person rather than simply seeing them. Although he is able to form relationships and carry on ‘normally’ as some would say, he is also clearly capable of disassociating himself from his chosen profession - whether that involves bringing someone in ‘hot’ or ‘cold’.

+Pilot- Knows his way around a ship, and how to survive in the void.
+Efficient- Approaches life, both professionally and otherwise, as simply and efficiently as possible.
+Chameleon- Can easily adapt to almost anyone and anything, and blend in within a variety of settings.
+Charming- With his easy smile and charisma, Reiss can often talk his way out - and sometimes into trouble.
-Imperial Culture- Although he hides it well, there are some subtle giveaways to his Imperial upbringing. Such might bring up uncomfortable questions, and perhaps less-than-friendly interactions.
WEAKNESSES
-Avoidant - Reiss has lived a hard life, where most of the people who matter to him have either died or are no longer a part of his life. Except maybe his mother.
-Above the Law - While Reiss isn’t exactly a criminal in most of the Galaxy, he isn’t strictly ‘law abiding’ either.
-Rolling Stone - He never stays in one place for long; largely out of professional necessity, but also slightly due to paranoia.
-One Eye Open - Despite taking great care to erase his tracks from those he defrauded in his former life, he still lives much like a fugitive. He’s a light sleeper, and rarely ever goes unarmed. Even when asleep.
