STRENGTHS

• Cyber-Ninja: The Peril can be completely concealed within the user's body, giving no outward sign of its presence. Likewise, its (normal) cutting RPM emits little noise.

DESCRIPTION

One militarized chainsaw already exists within the armories of the Dzara: the huge, difficult-to-miss Jawbone.

The physical (not to mention psychological) advantages of such a weapon are obvious, but it was eventually deemed necessary that Helix's forces at least attempt to miniaturize its virtues while eliminating its weaknesses.

The Peril is installed within the manipulator appendages of droids about as often as humanoids, if not more often. Nonetheless, it is the more fanatical elements of the Dzara's militia that have given the system its infamy.

At its base, the Peril consists of a slender, motorized chainsaw-like blade that unfolds on an articulated joint. Traditionally, it is installed in the forearm, though no hard and fast rule states that this must be the case. Some individuals more inclined to displays of martial arts might imbed a Peril in one or both legs. Others less concerned with maintaining a humanoid silhouette have been known to install them behind the shoulders, causing the blades to rise menacingly over the user's head as a pair of insectile limbs.

Wherever their location, the Peril's actual operating mechanism is not dissimilar to that of its larger cousin. Painstakingly quality-selected Helsteel/Kensium teeth run through the weapon's Otherplasma-based power source, causing them to visibly shimmer and glow with heat.

This dual cutting/melting action can allow the weapon to slice through most currently-known materials, given sufficient time. Rare is the substance capable of withstanding its ravages for long. As the weapon's own structure must stand up to the incredible temperatures of its own power source, it is similarly quite difficult to damage. Lightsaber blades, direct weapons fire, and other highly-destructive threats will usually fail to leave a serious mark.

Unusually, and in stark contrast to the Jawbone, the Peril usually emits little noise when in operation, creating only the very faintest whisper. While this can make it more ideal in theory for stealth work, these are not clean-cutting weapons as a lightsaber might be, and tend to make a horrible, evidence-heavy mess of their victims.

Similarly, it is a rare user who can resist revving the Peril's RPM to maximum, causing the tiny motorized blades to move too quickly to be individually discerned. The accompanying snarling noise and shower of sparks, if nothing else, can serve to shake the enemy's resolve.

When not in use, the user may fold the weapon back into their bodily location of choice with a reflexive, effortless mental action. Outwardly, very little evidence is visible that the weapon is installed at all.

Inwardly, however, the weapon's exact construction is baffling to many observers. By all accounts, the blade often appears to be larger and longer than the limb that contains it, raising questions as to how the system manages to conceal so long a weapon inside the tight confines of a humanoid forearm. In truth, many of the mechanical components of the Peril are composed of purified Morphium, enabling them to deform and flatten in ways quite impossible for other materials. When activated, the weapon assembles itself in the span of a few fragments of a second, then emerges whole.

While unquestioningly effective (particularly with the element of surprise on the user's side), it cannot be denied that the Peril is no simple weapon to use. Its alien construction and aspect often requires significant practice to master, and it is not unheard of for novice wielders to seriously injure or fatally maim themselves.
