"I… " Jackie hesitated with his words for a moment. "I thought…" There was the problem perhaps. He was thinking too much rather than relying more on his instincts, relying on the moment, relying on the flow. "I thought you were gonna counter me. I didn't want that." Even thought he functionally he did just stand there and give Matthew the initiative, Jackie was trying to be more patient. Remembering how he was nearly disemboweled back on Veridia after trying to take decisive action. He didn't want to be reckless like that again. But he couldn't allow himself to be indecisive either.

Jackie wasn't even sure how he ought to be holding the saber hilt. Low, high, measured, exaggerated, one handed or two? Once more he remembered his previous fight, not wanting to repeat his mistakes. Right now Jackie gripped Matthews saber with two hands. But loosened his grip some. Trying not to hold it too tightly like he had before. Focusing on what he was doing now offered him some clarity.

The pink teen moved in once more on the offense, closing the distance and taking the opportunity since Matthew was conceding that to Jackie. The moment The Angel's went to parry his attack Jackie used that momentum to flick his saber around Matthew's weapon and earn a gentle poke against his master's body.

With widened eyes Jackie stepped back again. Some shock evident on his face. How'd that happen? He saw it clearly the day before it even took place. How Matthew was gonna react. It didn't seem earned to him. Gritting his teeth some, "Erg, Master! I know I don't know things, but you don't need to be so easy with me!" Jackie barked up at Matthew. Thinking that he was simply allowed to score a little hit just now by his Master's good grace.

Without a word, he smoothly shifted his stance and, instead of pressing the attack, turned and leveled his blade—not at Jackie, but at Roten, who stood off to the side as an innocent bystander.

Roten, of course, reacted immediately, bringing his knives up to meet a blow that, predictably, was really only for demonstration in regards to what Jackie needed to be looking out for. The Bursantian's violet fur bristled as he lowered his blades. The unfortunate truth was that his instincts were ingraned to fight. For better or for worse.

"Am... I going to be a bystander for this exercise then?" he asked with a frown.

He wasn't a bystander. Roten didn't want to be a bystander, anyways. He had his own agency and ambition, things that wouldn't be reflected if he just mindlessly stood around.

But he hadn't been told to fight yet.

"That depends.. are you going to allow your brother in arms to fight with out you?" Matthew asked. " You've weapons aye? But have you the gall?" Matthew asked amused as he advanced towards Jackie. He had made it clear that this was a game that the two of them could partake in. He twirled his blade on and leveled it at the pink lad. " You were lucky, but you shant be so lucky a gain. " Matthew said with a devious pleased tone. He advanced on Jackie then lashing out!

Matthew seemed to acknowledge Roten’s concerns but not his own, at least it didn’t seem that way. Jackie was already overthinking things too. So once Matthew went on the offensive against him he put up a horrible defense. Poorly anticipating his master’s movements and blade work. Practically flinching at the blade over every movement it made. All of it compounding to make Jackie loose his focus.

“Eep!, AH!, Ow!” He exclaimed every time Matthew’s blade struck and made contact with him now. Each one a slight sting against his form and reminding Jackie that he really didn’t hold a candle next to their master.

“Eep!, AH!, Ow!” He exclaimed every time Matthew’s blade struck and made contact with him now. Each one a slight sting against his form and reminding Jackie that he really didn’t hold a candle next to their master.

"Fine," Roten finally hissed.

He reached out with the Force and pulled Jackie away from Matthew to some form of safe distance, at the very least trying to be mindful that he was now acting alongside the Zeltron boy. Then he bolted forwards with his head tucked down, his ears flattened against his head. The Bursantian was clearly built for speed, his body quick to assume the most aerodynamic form as he moved in to attack.

Jackie had been worried about potentially doing something wrong in attacking. Roten did not have such a hesitation. He recognized that Matthew was well above his strength and skill. This guy would be incredibly difficult to harm.

When he had closed the gap, Roten brought his blades from the floor up in an x-shaped, uppercut-like motion.

Matthew eased his blade downward, slotting it into the center of the cross Roten's weapons had formed. With a deft twist, he leveraged both of Roten's blades aside, inverting his own hilt as he rotated it counter clock wise. The maneuver likely turned Roten with it lest he release his blades, momentum pulling him off-balance.

Then came the nudge, controlled, deliberate, almost playful push to the blades. His sunsword blinked off and on again in a sharp pulse, breaking the lock cleanly. Without missing a beat, he snapped a flicking strike toward Roten's flank, more encouragement to keep him moving and firmly away from Matthew's position.

With a quick flourish, he recoiled the blade back to centerline, pivoting his footing diagonally to follow through as he adjusted his stance moving back towards Jackie Rosso Jackie Rosso . "Charging in without word or rhythm; were you hoping to surprise me, or yourself?" Matthew called over his shoulder as he stepped back toward Jackie, blade returning to center. "If you mean to stand with your brother, then stand with him. Not ahead of him... You want to protect him? Then don't make him guess what you're doing."

Matthew stepped even closer to Jackie now with a smirk. He was… being oddly gentle with the two of them, in truth. He did, in fact, want them to learn. He was angled toward Jackie now, the one he'd determined to be their weakest link.

Without another word, his weight shifted.

A sudden pivot, low and clean, sent his blade snapping toward Jackie's outer shoulder in a controlled but assertive strike, testing guard, footing, and his composure. The movement was fluid, with the sudden pressure of a master reengaging.
