Several Tech Questions for anyone with the time!

In regards to weapons:

1, Is cortosis banned? Does it need approval?

Either for:
Full - http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Cortosis
Weave - http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Cortosis-weave

(Hopefully armor is banned otherwise people would be walking around invulnerable)

2, Mandalorian Iron:
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Mandalorian_iron

Same question as above!

These questions are pretty specific in that I want a material that can resist saber strikes, but not be overpowered. Cortosis is, because it shuts down your opponents weapon, but the iron is not really very flexible in something like whips ;) which i've tried before. They end up heavy and not really usable.

So a whip or flexible saber resistant material would be?

3, How much freedom should I take in constructing a lightsaber before it becomes a new tech request

Some examples.

Strength or precision of the beam.
Focusing Lense.
What the crystal offers the saber.
Old Relics - I often do this
Individual parts of the saber, like the hilt.

I've written most of the need to individualise the saber out of my system tbh, but still a rough guide would be good. I still feel that writing a saber it becomes like the Jedi/Sith wielding it.

@[member="Kei Amadis"] With the factory closed right now you can't really make anything with cortosis, cortosis weave, or beskar. That said, all three will be showing up on the restricted items list. What that entails is that a thread showing development will be needed. Those threads are 40 posts long(another staffer smite me please if I'm throwing a wrong number out,) and have at least three people in there. Once that thread is completed then you can submit what you are wanting to make to the factory(use the template, fill it out correctly) and it should be quickly approved. If any small edits or corrections are needed, then the RPJ or Admin(I still work in the factory) will tell you what needs to be done.

On to your lightsaber questions

Strength or precision of the beam. How are wanting to modify that? We dont' really modify that here.
Focusing Lense. If you're just using a standard focusing lense, or something that doesn't add a benefit I don't see a problem. If it does, then see below.
What the crystal offers the saber. We talking the Kaliburr crystal here? Because KOTOR crystals aren't really used here either, and if a crystal is given to a player it's an event prize at best.
Old Relics - I often do this Ah, more event stuff. We tend to leave old relics alone unless you got some sizeable RP's showing how, where, and just how difficult it was to get it. Other than that it's an event prize.
Individual parts of the saber, like the hilt. If you're just using a single blade, dual blade, dual-phase, or anything canon. No need to make a tech submission if it's something like that, unless you just want YOUR lightsaber in a document.

Hey dude, welcome aboard. Now, I'm only a RETIRED staffer, and a major overhaul to these rules is in the works, but the general principle that's always guided it is -- work for it. Get it as the result of a thread, keep it reasonable...that's about all there is to it. A Mandalorian wants to wear beskar? That's just fine. Someone else does? Folks might ask questions. Someone wants some canon cortosis bracers, or wants to play a Jensaarai? Sure, go nuts. But for anything really custom that needs to go through the Factory, like I said, that's for current staff -- ohai Jacen.

For lightsabers.... crystals that add to it aren't used aside from event rewards. At most just the color crystal is important or as Zaisen did I believe with a good write up it can have special properties. (this is a rare case I have seen) The setting of the beam I think could be shown in thread since it is adjustable, the hilt as long as it isn't something wholly exotic (ultrachrome instead of durlanium) Anything that could be seen as game mechanics just isn't used and relics need a decent sized rp (dominion sized at the least 125 posts) or be event items.

For armors, there are some things you can wear such as cortosis bracers to disable sabers. (The jedi have a version of these now) Armor can have a cortosis weave and be fine usually. Beskar is hard... mainly because the best forgers of it are the mandalrian's and they don't give away those secrets easily. A fully suit for a non mandalorian would most likely require a submission and dev thread.

Yeah, if it's canon and you have a good reason for having it. No reason for submission, but if you're making a character with a suit of beskar who's a Jedi while using Mace Windu's lightsaber with the kaliburr crystal......yeah. Factory and dev threads galore.

And you would no doubt have to beat down Ashin for the crystal

Lemme throw out another example to clarify the lightsabre stuff. I did a bit of a thought experiment with my Sith Master character, Velok. I had him own the most advanced, complex lightsabre that could reasonably be made by this board's standards without a ton of work. The end result scaled smoothly from tiny to huge blade (Splinter of the Mind's Eye as precedent), was waterproof, lacked dimetris circuits in the activation loop (Hand of Thrawn as precedent), and actually had a tsil as the activation crystal (so I said that it was always in pain and its glow could repel drochs). There's a ton of wiggle room in non-videogame canon stuff without throwing in things like ranking blades by strength and precision, etc., because none of the stuff I just mentioned really affects balance in a fight all that much.

As said above you have to work for it. Though for the strength and the precision of the beam it doesnt really matter. If you have a wider blade so its easier to block blaster fire then say so on the tech article. there is no real Strength ratting here on this site. As such lightsabers dont really break here. (as 1 its very rare for it to happen and 2 people dont want their lightsaber to just break)

and if you ask me, If you do use things such as Cortosis then use it in very small amounts. Like just the arms for a bracer/gauntlet. That way its more reasonable than a full suit of Cortosis. I mean if you really want that then, be my guest, but dont expect alot of people RP with you if you have armor like that.

Thanks all for the further thoughts :) I wrote this up while looking at the first response but it still really applies.

Thank you for being so fast! :) Firstly to qualify, I never, op my characters if I can help it, and that becomes a harder battle the stronger you get :D, you need to reach further and further for weaknesses. Its why I am loathed to bring a Knight or Master over too, my favorite has well over a hundred saber duels.

On length, development etc, A thread for saber part, for me, would last a long time. No point otherwise, because that's where the weapon's story comes from.

1, Mostly my parts I use for background ambience but let's start with the tech side of things:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Focusing_lens
Focusing lens, a sometimes used point of specialising a saber.

You can see already if you click that you have a decent amount of options, just as examples. In reality sometimes I specify a wider or more focused beam, depending on the character. For Kei its going to be more focused (sniper trait etc), for someone who wanted to fight well 2 on 1, or 3 on 1 in soresu for example he'd use a wider beam to deny them even more room.

2, Hilt is a bit more obvious, I could show you examples of clawed hilts on google, but let's get more specific. A hilt with a rip-tie cord (to the wrist), or a hilt with a clawed edge used for melee ;) these are just a few examples of what we've played out before.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Hilt

Also however aside from that the material of the hilt, can be made very tough to break without restriction.

3, Ignore the big OP Crystals - One of the most deep and meaningful crystals I had was because, my character as a Sith, twisted a woman against her family and tribe, drenching the entire place in betrayal and making her his apprentice. This was what he made his weapon out of and in part defined him.

I don't want an op'd crystal, but let's say Fyor has a crystal in his chest, can I just play out the fact his entire life experience is in that crystal, which is part of the character goal, he's the most likely to take the crystal and make a practical use of it.

4, However for example on the modification side, we could shift the spectrum on the beam into a different color dependent on its goals. Yeah i am giving you Sith a bit of material too in all of this ;) but its all good, Jedi can use it to.

There are other specifications:
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Lightsaber

Skip to mechanics:

Pommel Caps - Power Cells - Insulators and discharging cells (less important)

  • 1. Then have fun, it's just background noise my friend.
  • 2. As long as it's canon, and not using a restricted material for it's hilt. Then you don't need anything for a Saber, you just can "have" one. If it's something crazy like a rip-chord or made of phrik. Then yes, we shall probably ask for a tech entry if it's something not seen before or impervious to lightsaber strikes.
  • 3. If the crystal isn't big an OP, then just organically RP that progression of it going from being in his chest. I'm going to assume just a standard alchmically altered lightsaber crystal that has some darkside effects? Just RP it out, then put it in the saber. If it's doing anything a little crazy, just make a submission after rping that out(which would be a great story if it's that important to him) and go for there.
  • 4. That's just background information, and really isn't necessary or game-breaking here.

@[member="RodianHero"] No.....Do mandos wear beskar in canon? Yes, they do. Because they know how to forge it, anyone else would need to explain how they got their hands on it and forged it.

I also wanted to add that while part of the Jedi I'll follow this specifically, thanks :)

I thought this was only the (proposed) standard for ships over 1K long, am I incorrect and does that mean all dev threads need to be this way?

I'm good with all sorts of tech submissions and the like. I've got a Double-bladed/Dual Phase lightsaber in the Factory but I've gotta recover it soon because of the SWRP Crash of November. I'm best with starship and droid submissions, but I can always lend a hand for any type of technology stuff. I've got a Jedi character as well and can assist in doing threads that describe the development of said weapons/tech.

Just let me know how I can help and I'll make it happen :)
