Suggestion Implement Thread Filtering And Thread Fields In The Codex

Instead of a wiki...

Instead of a wiki, just implement this feature, and implement fields. There's about 10k submissions in the Codex alone and moving it all to a "wiki" is probably unrealistic even if the community gets let loose upon it. The easiest way to implement organizing would be to implement fields for better sorting and to implement the Factory's thread filter in the Codex.

The overhead on this would also not be as taxing as some random, bloated software a mod author made 5 years ago that Tef's heard nightmares about from the ChroniclesRP crew, and personally experienced back when it initially launched and Tef tested it out before Chronicles was ever a glimmer in anyone's eye.

We also acknowledge that the wikis at thestarwarsrp and Chronicles, while cool attempts at implementation, do not meet the standards that Chaos holds and both systems require teams the size of the Factory/Codex combined to maintain and literally nobody wants to do that.

Also, we get to keep divs this way.

The one thing I do not like about how it's implemented in the Factory is not being able to copy-paste an entire template in, having to fill those bits in manually. This comes double if you want to do something outside the standard fields.

That's my only concern. It works OK in the factory because it's designed for produced items. Might not flow as well with species and lore items.

I more envision like, dropdown fields for a lot of fields. Like planet types, atmospheres, a lot of the boring stuff could just be you clicking things.

My own personal vision is you just post your div and your planet description and click through fields to fill out the rest. Everyone acts like they're sub is so unique that it can't be covered by fields, but it can. I'd just prefer, as a writer myself, that I dive straight into just writing about my planet rather than coloring the font of each field type. That all seems stupid to me.

Plus it makes it easily filterable, where you can just filter threads by "Arctic" planets or whatever.

I'm a fan of the proposed upgrades, but I'm not a fan of where or when the "automated" fields have the potential to become limiting. I've not pushed for the "Factory" treatment in the Codex because it felt/feels a little clunky to me. The freedom to "copy and paste" the template and customize it as the writer/member sees fit, oddly, seems to make it more user-friendly and less frustrating.

Yes. In some instances, the automated fields and drop-downs would be useful, but in others...I'm hesitant. For Factory, it makes more sense because a lot of things don't vary, but Codex is way more defined on a creative vibe. (Ex. Factory Ratings...Those make sense.)

I think I'm just saying the same thing as Valiens Nantaris Valiens Nantaris , but with more words.

There's already a thread tag system but it doesn't seem to be used much and it seems clunky and not well enforced. Honestly, most of what's mandatory on the forms on entries seems far less valuable than a robust thread tag system that can be filtered and sorted. A description of architecture isnt as useful as being able to filter to find threads tagged with a certain species. This is, of course, the existing tool on hand than any upgrades.

Another technique we may want to find space for is allowing folks to create compendiums which may be lists of relevant factory/codex threads. Major factions already do this on faction pages, and they're tremendously useful for the systems we already have. I think they should be more visible and more popular. Not sure where exactly they would go, but they're the best tool I've seen players make.

Lastly, this is a "for later" docket item to consider, is some means of collaborative editing of existing threads. If a codex entry needs to be updated 10 years after it was written and 3 years after its author left, it's all manual steps to do make changes.

Between those things that's like 95% parity with wiki features that we're looking for.
