Imgur and the UK

Hey,

So I noticed this issue today and a few other UK folks have as well. Imgur is currently blocked in the UK. Like fully blocked, no access to the site and that means the images posted from imgur on here can't be seen.

Not saying it shouldn't be used any more, just a heads up since it affects images posted, the use of images in divs and how decipherable a post might be for someone from the UK. The easiest solution for us is to use a VPN but not everyone can or is willing to, so I figured maybe making a post here just providing an explanation on why some people might be seeing "Content not available in your region" on posts or where images should be.

Hopefully this is just temporary for use but who knows!

This is due to a change in laws in the UK, but will eventually be picked up by a large majority of image hosting sites once they realise the danger it poses to them. Simply moving sites eventually will not be an option.

I am afraid that this is a problem that UK users will have to deal with, most simple solution I can give is a VPN.

Opera GX has a built-in VPN for those not wanting to subscribe to one. It's free but it's slow.

By the sounds of it we're getting something similar to that in December. Will it be as badly implemented and ineffective as the UK one? Probably.

There is nothing site administrators can do about this issue. Requesting they enforce using an image host that does not affect UK writers would be unfair and it would not be feasible. What I would ask is for anyone writing to use imgbb.com. This is a personal request, and at the time of writing this post, images hosted here are not blocked in the UK. At this moment in time many, many posts, signatures and faction art are just purple blocks making the website difficult to use.

So far I've been using Imgbox. Others are using imgchest, gifyu, and now there's a rec for imgbb.com.
There are alternatives for folks, but as stated above, this is going to be a continued problem in the future.

That's crazy, the only thing I can really suggest is using a free vpn specifically for the site or wherever you'd expect to see an image that is hosted by imgur.

edit: there's a feature that disables all div on the site, that should help mitigate the big blobs of purple "not available in your region" that you see, but it's going to be hard to get everyone to switch to a site that isn't blocking the UK in the near future if imgur (which is as big as reddit) already is.

Last night I was informed that Opera GX has a in-built vpn and it works if you connect to the Americas.

Another small note, if you're unable to do any of the above there is a way to turn off divs, signatures and the like until something is figured out for the UK users.

I've used it to get around blocked things with no issues. It's a great secondary browser.
