The receipt of a distress signal set into action a series of reactions, shooting the signal this way and that, invisible data beaming from satellite to relay to computer before reforming into something approaching understandable on the screen of a data analyst in the Old Fort on Pa'Desh. From there, the data was run through a descrambler, then saved to a text file. The text file was printed, and the data analyst walked to the printer, picked up the flimsiplast sheet upon which it had been printed, and examined it for a moment. For a second, he thought that it had come to the wrong conclusion, but then he noted something he had almost overlooked. The data analyst hurried across the room to large data center and knocked on the cubicle wall on one edge of the hall.

Delilah Graham looked up from her terminal. "What is it?"

"You should see this," said the analyst. He handed over the flimsiplast. "There's going to be trouble."

Delilah examined the flimsiplast, her eyes tracing along the coded words there. "Yes." She read it again, then looked up at him. "Yes, I believe there is. Back to your station, Weaver." She began typing rapidly into her computer, then touched a command on her communicator. "This is Special Agent Graham. I need to speak to Colonel Cryxe. Yes, it's a matter of some urgency."

Half an hour later, a message was received by the communications officer aboard the FIV Falcata, redirected the ship's progress to a rendezvous point at Bespin, to pick up a Security Bureau asset and a group of stormtroopers for an urgent mission to Dagobah. When the First Order ship arrived in-system, it would be hailed by an assault shuttle that had been hastily commandeered by the Security Bureau to shuttle the stormtrooper garrison and Agent Lotus to the ship.

There was no time to waste.

Immediately after the events of Welcome to Dagobah

A well-adjusted individual may have confronted their personal feelings on the atrocities they witnessed here, but frankly Dr. Vex didn't have any.

He had made a decision. It seemed in the present circumstances, it was safe enough to use the bunker's hyperwave transceiver. He didn't want to resort to this until he had confirmed what was out there, since for all he knew he might as well be painting a target on the base and its findings. They had been cut off until now, protocol dictating their contact with the outside was restricted to ward off leaks, but the arrival of the retrieval team heralded salvation, proving they weren't so alone after all.

The facility's dated comlink numbers had been breached by an intruder, despite their military-grade encryption. It was a feat that would take significant processing power for most people to achieve, but they would need direct access, so it would have to be mobile in this case. An advanced droid brain perhaps, or a grown AI. However, the advantage of mobility imposed certain technological preclusions and required proximity, which meant being in the thick of it and dodging swamp wildlife, spliced abominations and worse things while resources were focused on staying alive. Thus the interloper wouldn't be equipped to hijack this next attempt to reach out.

Unfortunately the array was still halfway across the bunker, remotely locked by the head scientist. As vice head, Vex had insufficient clearance to just overrule it and gain access from his fortified lab, and so he would have to brave the lurking Abelothian horrors. He took a small contingent of FOSB guards to avoid attention from the monsters prowling the depths. Even with his coordinated purging, more always seemed to pop up. The remaining staff and security, he left in the lab expecting they would be safe in his absence.

Emergency lights were ubiquitous, shining a bloody omen on the group. He led them briskly through the reinforced corridors, making turns seemingly at random. The display on his mask linked to every kind of sensor a field researcher could need, plans of the bunker and a steady stream of camera feeds. They had too many close calls, but the few creatures which strayed into their path were dealt with silently by a synchronised volley from the security's stealth blasters. They had managed to evade the predators' patrols by a narrow margin, eventually arriving at the blue-hued communications centre. With a quick manual override of the blast door, they were inside. The well-lit room was untouched and contrasted the dim hallways outside, with its walls covered in luminescent screens and its space filled with large devices instead of decay. The actual antennae and dishes were above ground to bypass the bunker's shielding, but this equipment connected to all of them.

The doctor identified the model he needed, a bulky block of a machine right in the centre which would look more at home on a spacefaring warship. This would allow him to transmit through their hyperspace relays and finally reach the First Order's military, maybe even Dosuun. He worked to get it up and running, prying open panels and forcing a reboot. Given he was transmitting blind without a precise recipient, he would keep the range within First Imperial territory rather than risk potentially lighting a beacon for their enemies. That said, the encryption was meant to prevent unwanted observers. The ciphers may have expired by now but any reasonably well-equipped listening post could still pull up the legacy keys to make sense of it, and his FOSB detail's skills at encoding messages would confirm the legitimacy of the transmission.

As the message would translate, "Hello, I am the Vice Head of scientific research and development at Dagobah's Camp Aurark. Or, as my department calls it, Rancor's Reach."

He recounted his situation. "We are in the heart of darkness. Aurark is lost. A passive corruption by the planet's Dark energies awakened our head scientist's Force potential, and apparently triggered a predisposition for psychotic disorder. She caused a catastrophic containment breach, releasing our experiments. Rather than tearing each other apart, the rogue specimens appear to have fallen under her control, and promptly began a systematic massacre of all personnel. We have taken refuge underground in Zentrum Labour, but it has become our prison after she posted a mutated rancor in the swamp above us. The facility's turbolaser defence turrets could destroy it, but we simply cannot get to them."

He always found it easier to communicate through text. Trivial compared to keeping track of various social cues and sensibilities when face-to-face. "Recently, the retrieval team 'Echo-429' arrived to salvage Aurark. We received their distress signal, although they have since been unresponsive. To make matters worse, it appears a number of criminal elements also picked this up and have intruded on the Camp. The beasts seem to have largely dealt with these opportunist third parties, and they will not uncover our true purposes here. My local comms were compromised by a foreign agent who seemed to suspect, but I believe I have thrown him off. This should not affect the First Empire as a whole, as our ciphers are well over a year out of date."

Vex's six fingers danced deftly across the keyboard. He had never really put to writing what had happened, and it was strange to do so after merely trying to survive all this time. "We have surviving high-level researchers, seasoned Bureau personnel, and moreover a centralised archive dating back to Aurark's inception, containing invaluable data which does not exist outside of the facility. With your assistance, I intend to extract these assets, perform a wipe of the records and ultimately detonate the thermobaric warheads planted within the perimeter. Something extremely volatile and dangerous has been let loose here, though fortunately contained within the walls of the Camp. It is the darkest secret we kept on this ark: a viral rakghoul strain which could conceivably threaten the galaxy if it escapes, as in the age of the Gulag Plague. Annihilation is my proposed solution."

The message was signed, "Best wishes, Dr. Indra Vex."

FIV Falcata, Chasseur-Class Corvette
Task Force Fencer
Status: In System, Dagobah

-

"Adjust bearing, zero two zero. Full stop."

The command came from a grizzled First Order Lieutenant Commander, a week's worth of stubble covering his normal clean shaven features. For weeks they'd been dodging Ssi-Ruuvi patrols across former First Order space and then at the first hint of respite, another directive. Under crewed, boasting yet unrepaired battle damage, and suffering from a phantom power leak, the FIV Falcata would be put through its paces. Lt. Commander Valencia wasn't one to shirk away from his duty however. To ignore orders was never an option, it was thus the crew of the last remaining corvette, Task Force Fencer, found itself dropping from hyperspace at the extreme edge of the Dagobah system.

A soft chorus of his command echoed across the bridge before being transmitted to Engineering, a gentle hum slowly reaching a decrescendo as the engines were brought to a standstill. "Standby Auxiliary Drive. Conn, set a course for atmospheric entry. Comms, prepare a tightbeam message to the surface. Tactical, what's out there?"

It was a cautious move but a necessary one. Beside the rough-around-the-edges Lt. Commander stood his XO, Lt. Pyre, steely blue eyes flicking from console to console. The crew had been diminished over the course of the last few weeks. They'd lost nearly a third of their number since the fall of Dosuun, each one striking a heart chord of the Falcata's second in command. He could recount their names, their faces. *Vilad. Borstein. Galvan. Dretzel. Castavan.* The man's momentary lapse recovered as the officer at the tactical station issued his report. "Only two Ssi-Ruuvi vessels in system. Standard sweep pattern towards the planet's Southern pole. If we give it another minute Sir, their current bearing takes them towards the opposite side of the planet."

A satisfied grunt escaped the Lt. Cmdr.'s lips, hand gently rising to rub against the stubble of his chin. "Comm status?" he inquired. "Ready and waiting Sir." came the reply. A nod from the commander sent an audible chirp across the open space of the bridge before his voice carried forth. It would be encoded and transmitted as text. "Camp Aurark. Stop. This is the FIV Falcata. Stop. Arrived in system, awaiting window for extraction, two enemy vessels in orbit. Stop. Estimated window of opportunity in 20 minutes off this mark. Mark. Contact on Failsafe Frequency Zero Seven. Aurek. Eight." The message transmitted, now all they'd have to do is wait for the right moment. "Ms. Nakano, do you care to fill us in in the plan?" asked the Lt. Cmdr. Both the Commander and Lt. Pyre looked to the woman in anticipation. Though the Commander wore a strained smile, Lieutenant Pyre wore an uncharacteristic scowl. *Infochants and their lackeys are hardly anything but bad luck. This Agent Nakano isn't any different.* Despite his personal convictions, he was committed to the boat and to her crew. They would see this through, bad luck or no.

Isobel had left the stormtrooper squad to prepare in the makeshift ready room and headed for the bridge. She strolled onto the bridge, her boots making a muffled thump, and took up a position unobtrusively out of the way. She observed the proceedings without comment, mentally running through her preparedness checklist until she was addressed by Lieutenant Commander. She cleared her throat and inclined her head towards the CO and his executive officer. "Of course, sir," said Isobel, straightening up and squaring her shoulders. "The ask is to bring us as close to the planet as possible to allow us to deploy in our assault shuttle. Any kind of fighter support you can offer in this region would be appreciated. We have next to no signal intelligence regarding what the Ssi Ruuk or the Outer Rim Coalition have here, so we're going in more or less blind."

She had her doubts whether what was at Camp Aurark was worth the risky operation; incurring into ORC space and risking entanglement with the SRI was no mean feat.

"Since we don't know what we're going to see down there, ideally you'd be able to stay close enough to extract the team with whatever assets we can recover, but given the nature of the location, we'll have to be flexible in terms of operational security." Isobel sniffed softly and flexed her wrists behind her back anxiously. "But it's for the best that we are able to get in and out with as little exposure to the assault shuttle as possible. It's not equipped for extended solo flight in a potentially hostile environment without support."

In the time following the transmission, Vex's relentless crusade to breach the archives had cost several casualties. Fortunately he had spent the past few years pushing his subjects beyond their fragile physical limitations while preventing their expiry, experience which translated well into stabilising and preserving the lives of the wounded. They had been placed in the communications room to recover, with the blast door safely locked from inside. Unfortunately, their failure had whittled the group down to himself and three guards.

He'd actually had to get his gloves dirty on occasion. Another roving band of chimeras had been silently dispatched. The weight of the charric pistol was unfamiliar in his grip. His hand was untrained, but steady enough, and the targeting software did the rest of the legwork. It helped to view it as a surgical tool for a specific procedure. In this case, euthanasia. "How much further?" his right-hand man, Gladur asked in a hushed, gravelly tone. "We can't keep doing this." The grizzled FOSB agent stepped over a corpse, keeping his blaster's muzzle trained on the dark corners ahead.

"Not long now," Vex replied. "Around the corner." His palm traced the segmented wall to its edge, and he hunched to peer into the transparisteel viewport of the next door. Taking a hydrospanner from his pocket, he removed the panel and tinkered with the wiring underneath. A moment later it shuddered open, sliding into its frame. "Go on, take what you need." The deilokin pointed to the unlocked armoury with two fingers, his equivalent of a wave. It was not their destination but on the way. All main routes led to the archive situated at the core of the bunker.

The three security officers retrieved plenty of ammo for their stealth blasters, backup arms much better suited for open combat, and more importantly managed to dig up a few sets of their black-enameled shadowtrooper armour. These were in-line with the previous generation of Stormtrooper armour, and were accordingly durable. "Why don't you wear one of these, doc? It'd be safer," Agent Gladur offered as he suited up. The carbon-coated plates they wore made them almost seem to disappear in the low light, if not for Vex's keen eyes.

"It would kill me," he explained. A programmed alert from the comms room reached his visor. It seemed his efforts bore fruit. "Excellent." He adjusted his comlink to the specified string, 07A8, and cleared his throat. "This is Doctor Indra Vex. I see you received my correspondence, Falcata. With whom do I speak?"

Assault shuttle? Fighter support? Out of the question. The best they'd been able to wrangle were a flight of TIE's, magnetically locked to the hull and the single assault shuttle attached likewise to the FIV Falcata. They would make it work. They didn't really have a choice now that they had arrived. "Very well Agent Nakano, we'll send a single escort with the assault shuttle - you'll have our best pilot." A wave of his hand sent a junior officer darting from the bridge, no doubt to make the arrangements. "I'm also sending my XO with you", he said definitively. Had Lt. Pyre been less practiced at maintaining his bearing, a look of surprise would have made itself visible. Instead he did little more than blink. *What is he thinking?* contemplated the Lieutenant.

Against instinct, Vonnegut made to raise his voice in protest but was cut off by the comms officer. "Sir, incoming transmission from the surface!" With a nod, the LCdr gave the go ahead, a transmission playing audibly.

This is Doctor Indra Vex. I see you received my correspondence, Falcata. With whom do I speak?"
"Doctor Vex, this is Lieutenant Commander Valencia - we were concerned there wouldn't be anyone left by the time we got here. We're preparing a shore party as we speak, can you relay your coordinates? What's the situation on the ground?" He paused briefly as he awaited a current sitrep before continuing. "There are two individuals you'll be coordinating with, a representative of the FOSB and my XO, Lieutenant Pyre. Get ready to go home comrade."

Looking to both his Lieutenant and Agent Nakano he ushered towards the rear of the bridge. "You're up."

Isobel's eyes widened slightly, but otherwise made no reaction to Valencia's pronouncement. Strictly speaking, the Navy was running transport on a Security Bureau operation, so he had no jurisdiction to make the call, but Isobel wasn't interested in getting into a pissing match with her naval cousins; there wasn't enough boot polish in the Outer Rim if things went that way. So Isobel simply nodded her head. "Very good, sir," Isobel said, clicking her heels together in a reasonable approximation of an officer's salute. She waited to be dismissed, then turned and headed for the turbolift with [member="Vonnegut Pyre"]. As they boarded the turbolift, Isobel zipped her duty jacket with its high necked collar, and its microphone mounted near her chin.

"Clear the pilot's seat," she muttered to the shuttle team, then adjusted her frequency so that she was patched into situation report taking place between the Lieutenant Commander and [member="Indra Vex"]. They could use all the intelligence they could get. She glanced at Pyre. "If you need supplies, we've got spare blasters and power packs. Maybe even body armor." When they arrived at their destination, Isobel boarded the assault shuttle and collected her bag before taking a quick role call in the trooper bay. When she had verifieed that everyone was present and accounted for, she carried her bag and joined the command crew in the cockpit.

"Need anything?" Isobel asked as she dropped into the co-pilot's chair, stowing her bag nearby.

Assault Shuttle, Maglocked | FIV Falcata
Task Force Fencer
Status: Prepare for Departure

-

Their travel to the narrow boarding tube leading up into the assault shuttle was short and quiet, nothing save a few short sideways glances between the pair. Before ascending the rungs of the ladder himself, Lieutenant Pyre stepped to a sleek wall panel and pressed his hand against a glossy sheen on its surface. A second later the panel hissed and shifted, a small cache of EE-4 Carbines settled behind it. Retrieving one and slinging it over his shoulder by a loose strap, Lt. Pyre strapped a duty belt with additional power packs around his waist. As an afterthought, he retrieved a simple breastplate, taking a moment to fasten it over his uniform. It was only then that he resealed the panel and ascended to the shuttle.

Arriving just on the heels of the FOSB Agent, he gave the carbine a gentle lift with his shoulder as the woman mentioned supplies, an amused smirk creeping at the corner of his lips at "Armor". A quick glance at his naval uniform gave him pause. It was true, they didn't know what to expect - but they also had a handful of fully armored troopers at their disposal. Well, technically her disposal. "I think I'll manage." he said curtly. The single piece of armor would serve him well enough, the helmet he'd forgone. As little more than an attache, the XO took up position behind and aside to the Agent as she settled into a chair. Firmly gripping the crash netting overhead he asked a question, the shuttle beginning to spool up its engines. "So, Agent Nakano - how'd you get stuck running this op? What's down there worth rerouting a Naval Attack vessel like the Falcata?"

It had taken a bit of a hack to get communications working down here. Vex had implemented a temporary station on one of the consoles as a remote comlink, to speak through from wherever he needed to be in the bunker. He had been able to set the proxy to the correct channel when the tightbeam came through. It was an oddly similar process to rigging music players up to work on old speeders which only had holodiscs and radio.

After a moment of interference, the scientist's voice came through clearly. "Coordinates? Yes..." He promptly recited a list of points of interest with precise locations for the CO's officers to take down, including the bunker's entrance, the last known positions of the retrieval team and the foreign spy, the central points of each sector in Aurark with their functions, hubs of activity for the creatures, and several turbolaser defence turrets along the perimeter. When he was done, their holographic map would be considerably more colourful and crowded. "That should suffice for now. I can produce more as required."

As for the situation on the ground, he wasn't sure how best to describe it. He was also unaware how much they'd already been told, but knowing FOSB it would be as little as necessary. In simple terms; "One... very angry Force User, and a veritable horde of monsters. All highly sensitive to sound, but quite susceptible to blaster fire. It is difficult to provide exact numbers; the Head seems to hide her forces in the dense surrounding marshland for up to three days, before returning to strike in waves. When this facility was still active before the breach, we had approximately one thousand in containment." They had all been installed with identification and tracking chips of course, although these were rendered inert, likely destroyed with the last of the Head's rationality. "Rest assured there are much fewer now. I have been watching the cameras to catch and purge as many as possible in the decontamination chambers, and we are currently in the window of retreat, though perhaps not for long."

There was a time-sensitive element to this. And if his plan was enacted, who knows how she'd react? She wasn't the woman he knew. He tapped the jaw of his mask, trying to discern how to deliver his recommendation. "You might have been told of the rancor situation at the bunker's entrance, which is why I suggest splitting into fireteams. One on the ground, the other operating the turbolaser and then rejoining the first. The turrets cannot naturally be used to fire on the base, but I can explain a workaround."

After so long in the dark, it was surreal to speak to someone else from the empire, but evidence supported this reality. "Indeed. It will be good to see Avalonia again." He signalled the three Shadowtroopers to move on. "Give me a line to your sortie, Lieutenant Commander, I would like to brief them if I may."

Isobel busied herself assisting with the pre-flight checklist, then filed the data away and pulled the crash webbing over her, fastening it in place securely. When [member="Vonnegut Pyre"] piped up from her left shoulder, she inclined her head over towards him, raising an eyebrow as she listened to his inquiries. "I don't have the details," she informed him frankly. "I got a call from my handler in the Bureau who said she received a priority distress signal from a Bureau facility on Dagobah. What the facility does, what's there, who's there beyond a resource -- I don't have the details. But it sounds like we're about to get something." She indicated her earpiece, as if to suggest that the executive officer tune in himself as well.

It got weirder and weirder as time went on; Isobel furrowed her brows, half-turning in her seat so she could look at Pyre as the information came in. It sounded like they were going to face some difficulties down there. She hoped that the Navy boy would be able to handle himself. The more she listened, the more worried she got. "Rancor?" she mouthed at Pyre, her eyes widening a little. When Dr. Vex mentioned Avalonia, Isobel's eyebrows furrowed some more. It was hard to believe they could furrow any more, though this time it was out of sadness and regret and not shock and horror.

"Who's going to tell him?" she whispered to Pyre, covering her mouth. But they didn't have time to elaborate further, for Vex asked to brief the team. She activated the microphone on her lapel. "Doctor Vex," she called into the line. "This is Agent Nakano. I'm with Lieutenant Pyre and the command team. What can you tell us?"

The agent's response to his inquiry was no more fruitful than he'd expected, whether it was plain fact or practiced deflection he couldn't tell. As the woman motioned to the small earpiece Lt. Pyre retrieved his own, settling it firmly in his ear. It took the officer a minute to catch up on what exactly was being said but if he thought any of it strange, unlikely, or nigh impossible he did nothing to reveal his thoughts save a slight twitch at the corner of his lips. Then came the voice clear as day: "...It will be good to see Avalonia again." This time the Lieutenant visibly winced, a sour scowl at the thought of having to explain their current situation. An oversight by the Lieutenant Commander when welcoming the stranded home - certainly not the home they expected.

Lt. Pyre listened patiently as Agent Nakano addressed their contact on the ground, mentally filing away details and formulating his own idea of how things would play out. No doubt it would be up to the Storm Trooper complement to decide on matters. He was after all, little more than an assigned attache. He'd never seen combat, at least not like this - the possibilities were nearly overwhelming. Absentmindedly he gripped the carbine in his hands. If it came down to it, he wondered if he'd be able to use it? Commanding weapons teams from the bridge was one thing, this was completely different. Awaiting a reply from the ground, he noted the subtle shift of the deck beneath his feet as the assault shuttle separated from the hull of the Falcata. Off they went.

[member="Isobel Nakano"] | [member="Indra Vex"]

A FOSB agent? Of course... it was as much their facility as his. In Vex's response, he used his suit's vocabulator to externally dampen his voice, allowing them to creep through the corridors undisturbed. "Welcome, Agent Nakano. I understand you and your team are putting yourselves at risk, and I take your safety seriously. It correlates with mine, after all."

He was going in circles describing the situation, and was mildly anxious to see results. "I want you to know precisely what you have become involved in. Aurark's true purpose was not a training camp. Rather, it served as a concealed Bureau facility - Rancor's Reach - used for the testing and development of biological modification. We were cut off from the First Order over a year ago, however this did not impede our operations. What you see was the work of an enemy within."

As the shuttle descended, they would have a fog-soaked view of the sprawling base, abandoned and vine-ridden. "I am a man of science, and I can empirically state this planet is host to Dark Forces. It seems they inconveniently chose our Head Scientist. She underwent changes and eventually snapped, unleashing our creations into her control, having them run rampant and killing hundreds of unprepared guards and staff. I suppose the subjects were successful, in that respect."

He nodded to himself, confident he had set the scene. "We were saved, and imprisoned by our work. Zentrum Labour, the bunker where our research was conducted, became a fortress. Our warden, a beast you may be familiar with is the first target. The rancor might sound intimidating, but with sound strategy it can be overcome. Your pilot will have two coordinates of note: the first is the entrance of Zentrum Labour where the rancor stands guard, which you will want to avoid for now. The next is a turbolaser battery along the walls of the compound which we can use to vapourise this obstacle. In the interest of efficiency, I suggest you drop a few people off there and insert with the rest."

He tried to describe what they could expect in order to facilitate plans. "There are only a few stragglers left behind at this time, so you shouldn't have much trouble picking them off. While the rancor is an exception, generally the further they get from the Head, the weaker her control. The bulk of them consist of various forms of mutated wildlife, but in these numbers they are no match for your weapons and armour. If you see any feral, hunched wretches of humanoids, stay clear of their teeth and claws. These are rakghouls. We have synthesised a supply of effective serum, but we are still trapped down here. I think we can work together and resolve this problem."

It was similar to giving lectures back on the Dosuun campus; a reminder that he might have to take a brief sabbatical, to assure his colleagues he was going through the motions. "It was my responsibility. My failure." The confession was delivered with little emotion or remorse, more an observation. "I could have prevented this, but I was blind to her deterioration. This brings us to our current circumstances. I will explain everything your agency wants to know when we are safely out of this swamp, but are there any further questions for now?"

Isobel listened closely, her eyes widening as she absorbed what she was being told. She craned her neck towards the viewport as the assault shuttle broke cloud cover. Dagobah was a fog-shrouded mudhole, but thanks to their scanners and a lucky break in the weather, they had a reasonably good picture of what the situation was on the ground, at least in terms of the facility. "Thank you, Doctor," she replied. "We'll follow your lead. Get ready to move. One other thing, Doctor: how many people -- people, healthy people -- will be extracting with you?"

As she listened to the unfolding data, she directed the pilot according to the instructions: hover near the turbolaser emplacements and lower the ramp so a small team could disembark. She muted her microphone and unbuckled, heading back into the troop transport, examining the troops available, then selected a handful of them. She briefed them on their mission, to take control of the turbolasers and neutralize the obstacle, and be on the lookout for any kind of murderous fauna. And then -- you know -- kill it. She waited until they had scrambled off, rifles slung over shoulders. Isobel turned and hit the button to close the ramp, then moved back to the cockpit.

"What do you think we should do to this guy?" she asked Pyre. "On the one hand, this is pretty bad. In the monster-killing business we'd call a rancor a double-bastard super-hard vicious monster. We shouldn't have those running around. On the other hand, it's not like we have brilliant scientists growing on trees in the First Order these days. What do you think?"

As Vex struggled with the archive security console's countermeasures, he pondered the agent's query. The unknown variable was always people. They were unpredictable and they threw any equation into chaos, skewing all prior assumptions.

This Nakano was the wild card, but given the hand Vex had been dealt he'd take any advantage. In any case, it was exhilarating to get even a hint of change. "I have gathered around fifty personnel in the bunker. Based on limited communications since the breach, I estimate an additional one hundred surviving throughout the facility. While we could attempt the controlled capture and curing of rakghouls, this would be prohibitively dangerous and logistics-intensive. Prioritise your own survival, shoot to kill."

The selection of Stormtroopers landing at the perimeter defences would have the doctor's voice in their ears throughout the process. "You have landed? Good, now proceed up the external stairs and find the gunner's terminal. Together we shall turn this rancor into dust."

He succeeded in breaking the defences on the archive. With a quiet whoosh, the heavy blast doors slid open on command. He took a few tentative steps into the cooled server room, wispy trails of vapour enveloping his feet. "Here we are. The fruits of our labours are contained in these towers." He pointed the Shadowtroopers to three consoles, guiding them to initiate a mass data transfer and plugging into a fourth access point himself. The storage medium would be his own computerised suit; it had sufficient surplus memory to store the years of files. It was a gamble, becoming the avatar of their blood, sweat and tears as it were, but one he wagered would pay off. If he successfully returned this to the empire, the possibilities were exciting to say the least. It could represent a latchkey in scientific progress.

"Honestly?" he replied. "Since the initial invasion, I'm not sure I could lay blame at anyone's feet. It's all gone right side up." He slid into the co-pilot's chair, one hand resting on the console, the other firmly gripping the EE-4 blaster slung over one shoulder. The last time he'd had to make any sort of ground tactical evaluation had been the academy and even that was infantry tactics, not this.. Let's get to the second drop point.

The facility itself was like a maze, unfamiliar angles and sharp corners would prove difficult to maneuver until they had retrieved the scientist. What he didn't want was to get caught somewhere they wouldn't be able to get out of - especially with that Rancor and the void knew what lurking on the surface. There was a reason facilities like this were often left out of official records, or at very least hidden from the majority of personnel. Nothing good could come of it. "I'm ready when you are." he reiterated to the FOSB Agent.

The doctor continued to facilitate the large-scale data shift while simultaneously upholding communications with the ground team. In a twist of dramatic irony, any conversations taking place in between his hailing he had no awareness of.

"So, gun crew, you are up the wall? Excellent. Hmm, on turret W-5... you should find a red toolbox situated a few metres left of the main gunner terminal. Please open this and find the diagnostic datapad. Alright, now connect to the console - it's a standard holoport. Find the first instance of following string 'IFF', and from there use the context menu to delete them all; then reboot. I will provide you with the necessary permissions." It would break the turbolaser battery's friendly failsafe system which he had personally tweaked, but given the present circumstances it hardly mattered.

He changed to the main body of the ground team while he worked, eager to impart his latest observations. "The Chancellery may be one of the most secure locations in the camp, and well suited to housing atmospheric shuttles. You should be nearing it now. It would be a fine retreat, in the event of... complications." He expected the opportune destruction of her favourite pet to be met with a final hostile response. She was mad, not stupid.

Isobel's eyes closed and rolled backwards -- for once, not in exasperation. She was processing the bad news; that though she had room on the shuttle for Vex and part of his core team, they would be leaving dozens, perhaps over a hundred of the First Order's citizens and scientists behind on Dagobah. The lucky ones would be killed by the monsters that Vex and his team had created. The unlucky ones would starve as the resources dwindled and became exhausted. Maybe a few would try to find their way to Outer Rim encampments and try to defect. She couldn't say she would blame them; anything else would be a almost certainly be a death sentence. "Dr. Vex," she said quietly. "I need you to think about a triage list of your team there. Assume you have room for... two dozen," she thought. "Break them into groups of twenty-four. We'll come back for as many as we can, but this operation isn't going to remain clandestine forever. I'll leave it to you to decide how that will go, but my advice is to keep things quiet. I'd hate to have a mutiny on our hands. And please understand that you will be first out -- operational requirement. I'd appreciate it if you didn't make me sedate you and carry you out."

Who knew when these types would get funny ideas about bravery and nobility in their heads. She shot a glance to Pyre and nodded, giving her blaster one last looksie before standing. "Dr. Vex, we're switching to mobile commmunicators. Forgive me if things get choppy. Please stay in touch."

She and Pyre exited the gunship with the rest of the troops, establishing a perimeter around the shuttle. "Right. Team Aurek, remain with the ship and keep it clean. This is, as far as I know, our only way off this slimy mudhole, so don't let anyone steal it or blow it up or infect it with the plague. Pyre, Team Besh, you're with me. Lock and load, check your targets, and stay frosty." She ventured towards the entrance of the facility; that last instruction would be difficult. She hadn't been exposed to the environment two minutes when an uncomfortable prickling of sweat began to tease at her neck, just under the collar of her jumpsuit. Still, she moved forward carefully, seeking cover and moving as cautiously as possible.

"Stay close," she muttered to Pyre before popping out from behind an outcropping to approach a door control panel, seeking entry into Vex's workshop of horrors.
