Special Features:
Base Deployment - The Iblis-class maintains several small prefabricated bases underneath its fore wings. Not nearly as massive as the common prefabricated garrisons used in old Imperial deployments, these bases allow for Protectorate forces to more easily coordinate ground ops and defend landing zones.

Maneuverability: 13/17
Speed Rating: 13/14
Hyperdrive Class:
  • Primary - Class 2
  • Secondary - Class 12
Strengths:
Quarzite Gel Packs -
Thanks to the late research team's efforts on Quarzite, the crystal with the same name was processed into gel packs that could handle all of the data processing that normally took racks of data chips. As an added bonus, these gel packs are not susceptible to ion fire. With proper shielding on the engines, this means that the Iblis-class is virtually immune to ion cannon fire. Ion cannons remain very effective at stripping the ship of its shields, and remain capable of briefly disrupting sensors and weapons but will not cause the ship to shutdown.

General Firing Arcs - The Iblis-class has turbolasers, flak cannons and quad laser cannon batteries arranged in such a fashion as to give it near complete coverage in all directions.

Weaknesses:
Heavy Capital Ship Vulnerability - The Iblis-class, as a dedicated carrier, is not intended for direct capital ship combat. Its two Mini-Javelin Hypervelocity Cannons are angled downward, resulting in poor targeting angles against other capital ships. Escort ships are absolutely critical to the survival of the Iblis-class while in space.

General Firing Arcs - As the Iblis-class is designed to lower into atmosphere and maintain a secure area of operations for Protectorate forces, its fire arcs are meant to keep it protected from all angles. This does mean that while the ship can ward off unfocused attacks, it is vulnerable to coordinated and focused assaults.

Atmospheric Operations - The Iblis-class is meant to operate in atmosphere. This means that the ship suffers from a severely reduced capacity to maneuver due to the presence of atmosphere. This has a minor effect on the ship's propulsion systems as well.

Description:
The Protectorate has had great success in repelling invasions, but has had mixed results when going on the offense. Druckenwell was a forfeit by the Confederates while their shipyards fell around them, and Vergesso had been a relatively minor engagement while the bulk of both sides were occupied elsewhere. Kayri, Atrisia, and Coruscant all share a single trait in common; the Protectorate could not create a defensible position on the ground for its forces to rally behind.

The Herald-class made an attempt at correcting this weakness, but failed. It could disgorge a great many troops and supplies, but often needed the field to be clear before it could be properly deployed. In that sense, it was a better second-wave landing ship. What the Protectorate needed then was a front-lines assault ship that could clear its own area of operations and assist the forces on the ground. But this led to a problem. Stationary ships made for great targets to ion cannons. It would not do well to have a ship crush any Protectorate ground forces. So a dual solution was needed. The perfect ship needed to be able to operate for extended periods of time in atmosphere and needed a way to ward off ion cannon attacks.

The answer to this problem was the Iblis-class. The Iblis-class Planetary Assault Carrier is designed foremost as an atmospheric base of operations to coordinate the deployment of Protectorate troops and armor onto a surface. Eight squadrons of starfighters and bombers support the Iblis in this endeavor. Twelve gunships deploy to escort the twenty dropships down to the surface. Forward operation bases can be set up using prefabricated parts that the Iblis stores under its fore wings. This allows for ground forces to have a defensible fall-back point, as well as a rallying point for the duration of combat on the surface.

In order to better support itself and troops for ground operations, the Iblis-class has two LH-39 Mini-Javelin Cannons installed. Lowered to a negative incline of twelve-point-two degrees, these cannons are designed to be fired at entrenched and well-fortified ground targets to allow Protectorate forces to proceed. Much of the rest of its armament is designed to support the ship in maintaining air superiority. Fastmounted turbolaser turrets are designed to take out enemy boarding craft while flak and quad laser cannons ward off enemy starfighters.

It's not a perfect solution, as the atmospheric operations imposes a significant maneuverability penalty to the Iblis. As well, its general firing arcs means a dedicated run on a single vector can rapidly break through the Iblis' defenses to inflict damage on the ship.

Dev Threads:
To the Lord Protector - Expedition to Quarzite to study the crystals of the same name. An unexpected problem arose, necessitating the destruction of the research station in orbit. Nevertheless, the research data was secured, leading to the development of the gel packs to use exclusively on the Iblis-class. Also one of the longest running dev threads out there.

Intent: To develop a planetary assault carrier for the Protectorate, as well as a base of operations during Invasions.

You put plenty of work into this and it shows. The design is nice, and it has a very excellent description and idea behind it. I hope it can see real use in invasions then. Pending Secondary!
