Private How To Build a Droid: An Adventure in Many Parts

Attempt 16:
  • Board scrubbed
  • Ports changed
  • Wires ok'd
  • Check for code bugs
  • Check for literal bugs

Connie stared at the screen, triple-checking her list. She'd done it all. The board was shiny and new-ish. No signs of wear or corrosion. The ports were all either okay or they'd been replaced. The wires'd been checked, double-checked with her meter. And if she spent any more time looking through her code, her eyes would turn green. A few more clacks at the datapad, checking that everything was in it's place.

Beside her, on that scratched desk, lay her latest attempt at a droid. Nothing more than a vaguely rectangular casing with a single optics unit. So far, she hadn't really achieved a real response. Nothing that could be called 'droid-ish.' Usually, she got nothing. A few times, she'd managed a fizz of static or an electrical fire. Once, she'd picked up chatter from a passing warship. Nothing useful though.

Crossing her fingers, she loaded the cable into her datapad and jumpstarted the power. A tinny whirr of life came from within the casing, various lights shimmering with recognition. A tiny whizz as the optics unit span into life.

Connie's heart skippd a beat. For a second she was frozen there, too scared to move. Too anxious to breathe. Had she done it? Had she finally made her droid?

The casing burst, with a cloud of acrid smoke spilling out. Sparks flew from the busted circuit inside as Connie choked, dashing towards the window and opening it up. Breathing in thick lungfuls of the Coronet air.

Well... damn.

Resigned, Connie shoved the remnants of her failed attempt in the trash bin and sat back at her desk, picking up her datapad.
