Feedback Help the Kit Bit Improve

I would like to get some advice and feedback on me as a writer. Instead of just focusing on one character this thread will blend me as a writer, and some of my characters as well.


1. How am I doing? I’ve been trying pretty hard to be a more consistent writer on the board. Several of my characters have been around for a few years now. Does it feel like I am improving in my staying power? What could I do to be better?

2. I feel as though I am pretty isolated from a lot of the other writers. What could I do to interact with more people? I know everyone is overwhelmed with threads so I hate asking for more, but I’m having trouble really finding a good core group of partners. I would appreciate advice on how I could fit in better.

3. Which of my characters do you enjoy the most? Why?

4. Do you enjoy the OOC writers musing blogs I do? Why or why not? Do you think I should post more blogs with my actual character accounts or is the OOC one okay?

6. What is something you would like to see more of from me? Is there anything you want to see specifically from a certain character?

Focus.

You routinely and consistently move on to the next thing that crops up in your mind. This isn't generally a bad thing if you can keep up with it, but you don't. The Hidden Path is a good example of this, where you took in several characters of your own to write in, did so consistently for a bit, then created a conflict with another group that you decided to run yourself on another of your alts, and then both groups fell silent.

You do not need to do everything and be in every aspect of a group to make it run. When you start making more and new characters, it feels like you're abandoning your others and leaving folks without your responses because you're busy with the big new thing.

Take it slower. Focus on a few rather than a whole bunch.

Basically what Kahlil said.

Your writing is GREAT - truly. And yes, you are improving. But there's still a bit of squirreling.

Where I have seen consistency is the characters you vibe with the most. So I'd suggest focusing on developing them - Kinley, Kat and Kubhee - main them - I genuinely want to see where they go in their stories.

Also stop trying to please everyone. We had this convo quite a few times. Find the folk that WANT to write with you and build story with them instead of darting between everyone like Roxanne and just feeling that your characters stay unfulfilled. You have great character concepts with interesting paths - explore them properly.

Take it from another Altoholic - it helps having a small group of writing buddies that you can trust to help you build great stories for your charries. It's great to write with new people now and again, but have your person/s to go back to for deeper development. I take my charrie Zhea for example: I originally made her to just be this Sage-like Jedi that is not overly keen on fighting and more concerned about peacekeeping and training the younger generation of Jedi - and that is still her core being. Then a friend and I decided to scrap in the Ilum invasion few years back and from there it just devolved into a full blown story that just snowballed into a totally unplanned direction. Yes, she had other connections along the way that helped shape her story, but she still has that deeper connection that is both her blessing and her curse and that shapes her true character.

Doesn't matter what relationships you build - it helps to have key people that help shape that character.

TL;DR: You're awesome - just focus on developing the charries that you have the most consistent muse for and have a select few trustworthy writing buddies to help you develop them. We love you still. <3

Hey Kitter, I don't think we have ever really written before. But outside looking in, I would agree with Kahlil. You seem to try to do too much at once, and I really do understand the compulsion. I'm very much the same way; I think the issue is less the number of characters and more about consistency and, as he said, focus. I love reading Kinley, though, so don't get discouraged.

Consistency is key. There’s always going to be slow periods and fast and crazy ones. Just gotta stick to something you like.

LFGs are the best bet - the try-out season stage. That and First Replies are both good starting points to make IC and OOC connections.

As for OOC only - that's a bit different. Yes, the faction discords help as well, but we all know how passive aggressive and toxic they can be - sometimes without people noticing they are doing it. So in that instance, I'd say avoid the folks that give you a not great feeling about yourself.

In all cases, it's a process of elimination for yourself. Separate the wheat from the chaff so to speak.

You are already a well known member. So a LFG or a First Reply with the relevant character for you will put you in contact with other folks and you can decide who works for your charrie's development and who not. Some folk gel and some don't, so there's no shame in it.

Hi everyone,

I really appreciate the help and discussion here. I think I have a good understanding of what my primary issue is, which is consistency and non flaking.

The problem I’m having is I’m not sure how to fix it.

So far this is what I’ve come up with:

• Do not start or run any groups for 1 year. This will give me time to develop characters , enhance other groups, and avoid going with ideas on a whim.
• Focus on first reply threads and LFG threads to find a handful of people who I really connect with in rp.
• Hold off on making new characters. Right now I have 5 that are solid. Kat, Kinley, Kuhbee, Gwen and Pari. Focus on developing them. If I get an itch to do something new try and find a way that one of THEM can do it, not a new character.
• Keep my 5 characters. Do not delete them.
• While I’m waiting on replies flesh out my characters in blogs more.
• Stop worrying when people get upset. I literally closed two factions because I got sick of getting harassed, but that makes others feel as though they have the rug pulled out from under them. Grow a thicker skin and don’t let the hate stop me (easier said than done).

I’m not sure what else to do though so if anybody has any other advice I would appreciate it. I do want to solve this issue.

28 minutes and you are already considering not doing what you thought was the right path for you.

It is so damn hard to get excited to write plots with you, or to give of precious availability when there is no stability.

At the end of the day though, it's her characters and her choice what she does. Talking down like that also doesn't solve anything. Maybe - just maybe - she feels stuck with who she currently has and maybe breaking out into an unwritten area for her is gonna be the breakthrough she needs. None of us can see the future and none of us will know anything unless we try something new. If it doesn't work, then it's back to the drawing board, easy as. Greatness never came from playing it safe after all

I agree with both ends here Cadre & Vilka Keldra

This isn't a new issue that Kitters has been running into. Advice has been given countless times but its hard to see your friend doing the same circle and ask for the same advice. Sometimes a little tough love is necessary to help get someone out of a rut.

My suggestion is: since Kat is dating a dark sider, perhaps her exploring a bit more of it wanting to get close to him and understand him might be a "new avenue" for you to explore with something familiar Kitter Bitters

I think the biggest take away is, stop throwing random stuff against the wall and hope it sticks. If you like an idea, keep pursuing it. I've done that personally countless times and in the end I've had more fun then trying to please everyone around me. Good vibes attract good vibes.

Cadre I am not going against what I think I should do. I’m asking others what they think.

See the issue is that I know what the problem is, I just don’t know how to solve it.

Comments like Allyson Locke are very helpful. It’s a concrete idea that I can pursue. It’s tangible. It gives me direction and I appreciate it.

I know this can be really frustrating. I’m sincerely not trying to frustrate anybody. The issue is saying things like “be consistent” or “stop flaking” are too broad. It’s clearly not getting through to my head the way it might others. Maybe I’m just a little slow or something. I don’t know.

When I listed all of those ideas I was ASKING if others thought that was how I solve it. I was approached in private and told that maybe the issue was my characters and that maybe I should consider doing a type or character I had never done before . So I came here to ask if others agreed with that.

I’m sorry if I was confusing. The point of this thread isn’t me laying down concrete plans. I’m asking for help making plans.

Like Kat dating a darksider and leaning into that. That is clear. It gives me a goal. I think it’s a good way to help her. I will do that and I honestly appreciate that.

Does that make more sense? I could really use some more clear direction like that but I understand if it’s not something people want to invest in.

I just need a little more to go on. I am sincerely not trying to be a pain. I’m struggling and I clearly don’t know how to fix it is all.

As I stated above, you've asked this same question several times. People have given you their thoughts in discord, in blogs in everything that you've asked. What you're not doing is applying the advice. Which then gets you back into this cycle.

That is the frustrating part and why I can fully understand Cadre's frustration. Its hard to get excited to write with you or the ideas that you propose. Because in either a few days or weeks those ideas are dead in the water. You don't allow anything to have a chance to breath -- if its instant gratification you're looking for, its not going to happen. And then it continues the cycle you're on.

Break the cycle, pick an idea and run with it. Give it time to develop, time to breathe, time to allow people to see the consistency that you're wanting to prove to others. Write what you want, write the story you want to give your characters. Don't let other people dictate. If they don't like it, they don't' have to write with you, if people are breaking the site rules to harass you -- report them.

But at the end of the day, do you, do what you want, do what you need to have fun.

Be the change you want to be in your story.
