It was a laboratory floating in space that lay at the co-ordinates given on the holonet to a select few that had answered an advertisement. The premise was simple, create a competition of sorts to achieve an objective that she had failed to do so on her own. Of course the whole competition was a farce, a cover-up. But neither of the competitors needed to know that. It was probably best if they didn't know at all. For that might enable them to fail where others had.

As the competitors walked the halls, either on their own or in groups, they would pass transparent doors where scientists and subjects were clearly visible. Nothing was amiss. Nothing felt wrong. There were no strange scents in the air that indicated anything was off. The whole place felt clean.

Lucinda stood waiting for them, datapad in hand. She didn't quite smile or show much emotion at all. Though she was no AI. She was human. She just wasn't very good at being personable. With a datapad in hand, she began to check off the names of everyone on her list as they came into view. Facial recognition by security cameras had sent their info right into her datapad for ease of access.

"Everyone has a locker for their clothing and personal items. They each have a locking mechanism with codes that you can create. No one here will be going through them, I assure you. Inside you'll find medical gowns that each of you must wear. Once you are dressed and everything is store away, report back here and I'll give you a briefing before we begin."

In a lab coat with his face hidden by a medical mask, Dayton worked silently. He seemed focused on one of his tasks, fingers tapping on the keypads in front of a dozen or more monitors. It looked like a security terminal, but it was more than that. The screens would flick from person to person, showing different worlds, different environments. Some seemed to be in the same places, whereas others were entirely on their own.

Voices were heard coming from multple speakers, but the volume was so low that the words themselves couldn't be made out. It didn't really matter anyways. At least not to Dayton. He was too busy listening to [member="Lucinda Larr"] as she spoke to the newest batch of 'volunteers'. They'd prove to be a very interesting batch. He was quite eager to get it all started.

But he had to be patient.

All in good time.

Fun and games. Much like her father, life was fun and games, much as possible. But could you really expect any less from an Excron, when Darlyn was somewhat infamous, at least on Commenor itself, for strange antics and unusual lifestyle. So it really was completely normal for Shoden to have arrived in her favorite pink jedi robes, a sucker in her mouth as she listened to [member="Lucinda Larr"]. Well, she'd gotten herself all prettied up for nothing, she chuckled and shook her head.

All the same she followed the rules, going to lock away her robes, force pike, and her family blaster. The illegally modified weapon, made for her by her dad, made a clunking sound as the nearly hand cannon weapon was put inside. Followed by a series of devices, such as an encrypted datapad and positively massive bag of candy, and her dressing in the gown as told to. She was the first to return to Lucinda, and stayed quiet. Like a child, waiting to be told what to do.

Always a good cover for her observant mind.

Padran walked the halls of this laboratory, looking at the machines and things happening in the rooms he walked by. Not that he understood what was happening in those rooms. When he walked into the room he'd meet the employer and the rest that had applied, he was meet by a woman who looked annoyed or angry. She might not have been neither, but the apathic and emotionless expretion made her look like it. Padran guessed it was [member="Lucinda Larr"]. Then he noticed another woman in the room. "Well hello, beautiful," he said to her.

Then Lucinda told them to Lock away their personal belongings, and put on some Medical suit. It seemed fair enough. But he wasn't happy about not having his blaster in his belt. But anyway he did as he was told. While doing this, he wondered what was going on, what he had signed up on.

He returned for the briefing, being the second to Return. Arriving right after the redhead he greeted by calling her "beautiful". Now, he just had to wait for the others to get ready.

What good this would do for Jairdain she didn't know but had signed up because it sounded interesting. Now she walked into where she was going to be a volunteer for a VR program of some kind. Trial and error would take its course and this might not do her any good at all.

Being greeted and guided through the halls, she was taken into a room and told to sit down. She was now left alone. Not having brought any belongings with her other than the clothes she wore. Her companion was present though and he sat hidden in a pocket built into her clothing. Sage was always with her and they comforted each other.

Sitting where she was instructed to sit, now began a waiting game...

Who'd of guessed that it would be [member="Shoden Moz"] that would arrive first? Perhaps it just shows the eagerness that teens have when it comes to playing games. So perhaps Lucinda shouldn't be too surprised.

What did surprise her however was when [member="Padran Rodarch"] started flirting with the girl straight away. That could either work in their favour or completely against it. Hmm. At least he followed orders.

[member="Jairdain"] wouldn't have to wait for long. One of the workers in a white lab coat would ask her to follow. She'd be led to the lockers and told to put her clothing and belongings inside, as well as dress herself in the gown provided. Afterwards she'd be led to where the others stood waiting.

Lucinda saw this on her datapad and went through her list. "There are still a couple more people yet to arrive.
If they don't show up soon, then we can assume that they decided not to attend. Your chances of success depend upon you, not in the number of participants."

Clunk-clang...clunk-clang....clunk-clang...

The impact of bantha-hide and durasteel boots reverberated hollowly through the immaculate halls of the facility. The wearer, a young woman with a smug grin and hands shoved into the pockets of her amethystine coat, strolled casually and carelessly while she enjoyed the rapping and rhythm of her boots upon the smooth, hard floors.

Clunk-clang...clunk-clang....

Accompanying the rhythmic promenade came the sharp chomps of pearly teeth upon a chewy substance and the gooey squish that followed as the chemical bonds broke down under force and saliva, only to be fully ingested moments later. The smug grin upon the young woman's face betrayed her moderated dissatisfaction at the substance's adequate, but substandard flavor that served practically on long space-travels but did little to excite. Unfortunately, while a single bar of the chewy substance was designed to provide enough nutrients for a five-hour spaceflight, Dawn was in the process of consuming her twelfth.

And that particular matter was catalyst for her to answering the call. Or, rather than a call specifically, an attractive advertisement. Food costs credits, after all, and a simple competition on the holonet seemed an easy-enough method to acquire said credits. It was a risky endeavor, noted her more wise and studious counter-part, but then it was the riskier investments that often yielded the highest results. After all, it was a competition set in a well-monitored laboratory in the middle of space?

What could go wrong?

Clunk-clang...clunk-clang....clunk-clang...

Dawn's melodic stride took her past the transparent doors where she casually gazed upon the subjects inside. The sight was nothing new to her. Nor was the pungent sterility that tickled her nose with each breath. For several years, frequent visits to facilities such as this were a norm until a number of unexpected complications from her subdermal implants had finally resolved. The memories were traumatic for the duration of her childhood. But as a callous forms, so too did her trauma become a faint memory of a more painful time. Instead of stroking the pains of a time past, the display of lab equipment and sterile scents left Dawn with a prominent numbness befitting a callous.

Clunk-clang...clunk-clang...clunk.

The next stop on Dawn's journey lead her to a room where lab-coated workers awaited. Dawn gazed at their faces and chewed a few remaining bites of her energy bar that had escaped the previous swallow. With her hands still dug deeply into her pockets, her grin widened.

"Am I late? I'm late, aren't I?"

Casually stepping past the workers, Dawn found a room with lockers. In a contrast to the sterility of the rest of the facility, Dawn could smell some faint, recent odors. Warm. Musty.

Following instruction from the workers, she made her way over to the locker and opened it, grabbing the gown from inside. Without a care, and in a manner well-practiced, she disrobed and put her clothing and equipment into the locker. While disrobed, the lights seemed to refract slightly upon her skin, giving a multi-hued off-color in highlighted areas, especially the areas were the skin was thinly stretched over her subdermal implants such as her elbows, knees, and shoulders.

For a few awkward moments, Dawn's multihued eyes observed the lock on the locker. She felt a sort of tingling numbness as her eyes seemed to stare blankly. She drew in a deep breath as a dizzying cloudiness washed over. The breath felt slow...labored. Deep. Her hand gripped the locker door hard, causing the metal in it to rattle a low, slow, reverberant rattle. And the pressure gripped her head.

Clunk...rattle-rattle

The final edge of her breath sped up. It was sharp and quick. As swiftly as the cloudiness had gripped her head, it released. Slightly disoriented, Dawn put on her gown and closed the locker. The absent gaze in her eyes shifted back to a grin as she approached the workers.

"What are you staring at?" She grinned and motioned for them to lead the way to the room where everyone was waiting.

It was fortunate that he wasn't the only late arrival, Caedyn wandering on in shortly after [member="Dawn Moor"] looking every part the Spacer that he seemed to be these days. There were two among the group that he immediately recognized ([member="Jairdain"] & [member="Shoden Moz"]), though thanks to his untimely entrance, he was being 'encouraged' to move quickly to his personal locker and changing area.

Today's session wasn't about anything overly aggressive or political, there were no more balls to attend or meetings with [member="Asaraa Vaashe"]'s stern Jedi parental figures. He had come without any weapons or personal effects, save for the clothes on his back and his datapad that was frankly a necessity wherever one roamed in today's Galaxy.

Caedyn's transportation had docked with the space-station, The Repertoire having been powered down, all save for the back-up systems that kept the ship in peak condition while he'd be down and out of it for a good while. This whole virtual reality experience was set to be a trip, to be sure. To experience another fictional world made up by someone's programming skills, much like a holo-vid or a simulated experience like back home on Svivren, only this time it was some sort of experiment that they'd volunteered for.

Returning to the rest of the group, having changed and secured his belongings in his locker, Caedyn soon found his place near Shoden and Jair, the familiar two were the easy choice among the other strangers he knew nothing about. Smiling to the two Commenori, he gave them both a quiet 'hello' before turning his attention back upon [member="Lucinda Larr"], curious to see what the whole ordeal would require of them.

It seemed as though everyone was here. Everyone that was going to show up anyways. Latecomers can always be suited up and joined in later. Lucinda looked up [member="Dawn Moor"] 's file on her datapad and marked her as present. [member="Caedyn Arenais"] was also marked off. After another look at the entrance to the room, she gave it a few more seconds before she looked to the group.

"Since it seems everyone is here, I shall start the debriefing. As you read in the advertisement, you'll all be put into a virtual reality simulation. It's a near replica of this Galaxy. My teams here have used a lot of data collected through various censuses and cartography's. This program called Harsh Realm has been running in secret for a few years now. It was mainly used for the training of high ranking officers for battle scenarios. However it has come to our attention that one of the officers, a man by the name of [member="General Omar Santiago"] has taken over the game. Rather than working to defeat the programmed enemies, he has taken it upon himself to become one. Where he is remotely accessing this program is unknown. His body is dialed in somewhere and we have yet to find it.

Your job is simple. Find Santiago and either find out the location of where he is accessing this program or kill him. Keep in mind that this simulation is quite realistic. It fools the brain so much that past volunteers have experienced injuries and even near death. Getting yourself out of this program isn't easy either. If we unhooked you from here, you'd end up stuck in a vegetative state. Throughout the program you will find Linking Books." She held up an image of such a book on her datapad. "This will provide you with the right procedure to safely exit Harsh Realm. All that you need to do is open it and place your hand on the moving image." Her eyes fell on each of them. "Any questions before we start?"

"Flirting with a country's ruler, bold choice sir, bold choice." Shoden teased the mandalorian who had been so swift to flirt, neglecting to add any details that would discourage it further. An enraptured audience was, after all, useful. She was going into an unknown situation and dealing with, evidently, a risky situation in general on top of that unknown factor. Which meant having something to use to keep connected to more of these rivals, important. She wanted to win yes, but beyond that she had become invested more with each passing moment. Figuring out a secret program's, ah, secrets? Useful. General Santiago? Important. Keeping Caedyn from finding any virtual women to flirt with? Top priority.

The details stuck to her head. Find or kill, in a program that could evidently nearly kill someone. Now Shoden was young, very young, but she wasn't stupid. That didn't seem, right, though Santaigo going all grr evil didn't seem right either. Well, she'd have plenty of time to ask him the details when she won this competition wouldn't she? She smirked to herself, as she considered the way victory would feel, already creating plans. Colleague, Cousin, Flirt, Odd one out. She'd have to be smart to outplay them all and also satiate her desire for answers as they came.

"Well, only two really. One, do you have to intend to leave or could someone... force you to leave with the book? Secondly, if these books are so important, why do we have to find them instead of the program just... giving us one? Seems like they'd need to be pretty commonplace in a galaxy sized program, otherwise we'd be stuck." Wheels, consider yourself turning.

Caedyn listened to [member="Shoden Moz"] as she asked her questions, soon glancing back to [member="Lucinda Larr"] as he pondered the situation himself. The Virtual reality simulation was a copy of their very Galaxy? That meant that it'd be massive and filled with all the same dangers that the real world's held. Raising his hand as if to pose a question after his cousin had finished asking hers, Caedyn's first concern lay in how they would defend themselves.

"Are we going to be put into this Sim with any weapons or items on-hand or do we have to equip ourselves with whatever we can find once we're inside?".

Lightsabers for example weren't just any kind of object you'd come across in your day-to-day, they were rare weapons that were for the most part, only utilized by Force Sensitives such as himself. With that in mind, he was glad to have his additional training behind him, able to make use of most common means of fighting and self-defense if he had to...

"Wait...-What's this guy's name again?".

Omar Santiago wasn't just anyone, he had been a military leader back on Commenor...-Or something like that at-least. Caedyn didn't know all the details, just that this guy had been some sort of friend of his Mom's, doing a lot for Commenor before the Sith Empire had changed everything and forced them to increase the defensive and military capabilities of their formerly neutral world.

Not displaying any signs of being impatient, Jairdain waited for the lab worker to show up. It didn't take long before one appeared and guided her to a changing room. She was requested to take off her clothes, put a gown on and leave her belongings locked up. Giving a mental shrug, she did as she was requested and followed the woman into another room.

In this room were others also waiting. Soon enough a woman walked in and gave them a brief rundown of the situation. She held up a datapad and that did Jairdain no good at all. Some image must have been displayed on it because she said if they wanted to exit they would have to find what was called a Linking Book. When she asked if there were any questions, Shoden spoke up asking about the book and how many there were along with wanting to know why they all weren't just given one.

Caedyn then asked his own question and she felt they were good ones as well. She wasn't well versed in duelling with a lightsaber, but in the simulation, it would be nice to know if they would have weapons.

"How will this simulation appear to one that is blind and sees through the Force? I am not sure it will even work for me."

It seemed everyone was present, so the briefing began. It was an interesting bunch that had been gathered, but everyone seemed human, at least. But now was not the time to watch the other attendars. Now, Padran had to listen to what was being said.

The briefing wasn't very surprising. The Virtual reality part was in the advartisment, what it had been used for wasn't that important, and it was no surprise that something had gone wrong With it because of some lunatic hacked it. But he paid attention to what was important. Namely the name of said lunatic, the part about being killed or turning vegetative, and the books. Interesting design to use books, but who was he to judge that.

Then came the questions. Both the questions from the redhead and the other guy present were good, but it seemed the redhead thought about the competition a little too much. Based on her wondering if someone else could force the others out With a book. The question from the black haired woman was wierd, at least to Padran, and it didn't concern him.

"I second the question about weapons. And if this simulation is a replica of the Galaxy, won't it take a really long time for us to be able to find this General?"

The mission sounded straightforward, which was the type of mission that Dawn liked best. Log in, trace the source of the intruder on the network, and eliminate the threat. The excitement of the mission welled up within her that she had simply ignored the very apt questions of the others. Her orange and blue eyes glistened as her grin widened. Or at least, she felt as if her grin had widened. She felt her heart race in her chest. She felt the adrenaline pumping through her system and the rush of neurochemical release. And all of these feelings were a complete lie.

The details of the mission were absorbed far more than Dawn had realized. In fact, when she shook her head and snapped out of her daydream, she was able to recall the questions of her fellow contestants with exceedingly precise detail. Follow-up questions burned in her mind, like an itch that needed to be scratched. But when she tried to access the questions for vocalization, she found that she couldn't put her thoughts to words.

The dilemma certainly looked awkward. She parted her lips to speak, only for nothing to come out. The look of agitation became evident and her grin shifted to a solid line straight across her lips. Instead, Dawn's eyes glanced at the faces of the men and women surrounding her, memorizing them.

In no particular order except in the order by which her eyes had scanned the room, the Mandalorian was first. While Dawn had little experience with few cultures outside of her home world, she had encountered men of Padran Rodarch's stature in the past. Mostly in hubs and trade cities on her world, where some had passed through. Though Dawn wouldn't be able to recognize a Mandalorian at face value ( and, indeed, she simply referred to Padran in her mind as "that guy who has probably seen a fight or two"), she was familiar enough with the textbook history of the culture to make the association were it ever pointed out to her.

The next person that Dawn surveyed was the blind woman, Jairdain. If Dawn was inclined to the Force, she would have more detailed thoughts about the presence of this capable woman. Instead, Dawn saw nothing noteworthy about the woman aside from her impressive violet eyes, a color Dawn was especially appreciative of. And yet despite the lack of noteworthy features, Dawn felt a single word crawl in her mind over and over again as she studied the woman: Fidelity.

Caedyn Arenais was next. The man who followed Dawn into the room, like the woman whom Dawn had observed prior, had little traits that Dawn found noteworthy. Fewer, for that matter, with the only notable fact being that he was even later than she was.

The last contestant that Dawn's studious gaze fell upon was the youthful red-haired woman, [member="Shoden Moz"]. She was young, smallish in stature, but had an aura and general demeanor that resonated well with Dawn. Her questions were also extremely pertinent to Dawn's interests. Closer inspection had noted that one hand was missing, a fact that seemed to trigger a tingling numbness along her neck and scalp and the return of a singular thought: Fidelity.

As for the person conducting the experiment itself, Dawn had little to think of her.Another woman in a lab-coat holding a datapad. But as she was the face of the experiment, or challenge, or whatever it was that Dawn had signed up for, Dawn felt it was at least worth her while to understand the full context. While the old questions burned at the back of her mind, she decided to ignore them and move on to a few new questions of her own.

"Everything sounds peachy to me", she added, feeling complete control of her lips and tongue again."Just a few quick questions: who are we doing this for, how much will we get paid, and do we get meal breaks?"

Lucinda looked to [member="Shoden Moz"] first. The young woman seemed quite confident in herself enough to be the first one to speak. Most volunteers her age would have just let someone else do the talking. But not this one.

"There is no need to have to think of linking back out.
Placing your hand on the moving image on the page is enough, even if someone else placed your hand on it. Therein lies a risk of how a fellow volunteer can remove you from the competition. All tools, weapons and everything else you must gather for yourself."

Her attention turned to [member="Caedyn Arenais"] as he asked their target's name. "His name is General Omar Santiago, or Santiago as he prefers." There seemed to be some recollection in the young man's face. But Lucinda was too pressed for time to work all of that out now.

[member="Jairdain"] 's question was expected. Her file had indicated that she couldn't see with her eyes. That wasn't a problem however. "You'll all not be wearing any special visor or headgear to cover that portion of your face.
Instead you'll all be having an implant placed at the base of your skull. Through that it will activate and control the parts of your brains that empower your imagination and the dreams that you have while you sleep. Your optical nerves will not be in use."

The flirty one, [member="Padran Rodarch"] was the next to ask questions. She had answered his first previously, but his second needed to be addressed. "It is a Galaxy-wide simulation, yes, but the haystack is not as big as you think. Trust me.
I'm not about to place you on the wrong side of the Galaxy. You'll find yourself where our trail ran cold."

And finally it was [member="Dawn Moor"] 's turn. The latecomer had seemed eager, which was nice to see. "You are doing this for me and my benefactor. The payment is one million credits. As for meal breaks, you'll all be getting nutrients through IV's and all appropriate measures will be in place to ensure that you don't soil yourselves. This is why you are in those giwns instead of in your own clothing. There is a bed prepared for each of you. You'll be both comfortable and safe. All of your vitals will be constantly monitored by both myself and my staff."

This wasn't an average video game. This was much more engrossing than that. And the applications of it once this hiccup was fixed would be life changing for some.

It seemed all the questions had been asked. The answers had been interesting, and some of them a bit frightening. They had to gather all equipment themselves, though Padran didn't expect much else, and anyone else could force you out with those books. That meant it would be dangerous competition. But the money made up for it. And at least they would start in the general location where they thought this Santiago was.

It didn't seem like anyone had any more questions, so he didn't see any reason for them to delay any longer. "Should we get this game started? I see no reason to just stand around here longer than nescessary." Padran wasn't known to be the most patient, and he didn't like to wait without reason.

The competition would likely be tough. He hoped he would spawn in a Place With a blaster nearby. He could defend himself without weapons, or in a melee, but it was blasters he preffered. But he didn't have to worry about that before he was in the simulator, before he had seen the Place.

There was no doubt about it, their target was the same man that Caedyn and his Sister were familiar with. A close and personal friend of their parents, and previously a warden over Commenor via direct leadership of their military power-base. Rather than voicing his thoughts, he remained silent and simply nodded in acknowledgement to the woman. He couldn't help but get a sudden sinking feeling in that this was far more than just a game they were about to be playing. Obviously so, with their lives at risk but all the same, there was more to it all that Caedyn wished to know. Such as finding out why a good man was stuck inside this fake universe trying to control it all.

Come to think of it, who was [member="Lucinda Larr"] exactly. Who were the ones behind her, the ones financing all of this and why. [member="Asha Hex"] had always taught Caedyn to look deeper into things, behind the curtain so to speak, of what was plainly obvious and in sight. Their target would try and hurt them, if they crossed him. So it seemed like a mission more than anything, sugar-coated with a virtual-reality-type gaming experience?

Looking around the other contestants or soon to be players, per say, Caedyn wondered whether or not they'd end up competing against one another. Were they the type to try to take advantage of a situation and declare themselves a winner for pride or personal gain, without the proper authority to 'police' this operation, the people that were killed inside this fabricated world would die on the outside. To put it simply, they could be murdered and what would be there to stop that from happening?

Perhaps he was jumping to conclusions and looking for a problem more than was required of him, but the whole thing suddenly seemed more daunting than the previous excitement he'd held about it all. Of course, this didn't mean that he'd be backing out of it, anything but if there were lives at stake. His first priority would be to secure some means on protecting himself, outside of his martial arts training through Stav Kesh; from there, team work would have to be a necessity for all of them to survive, and hopefully they'd be wanting to learn more about the situation too, rather than going straight for the kill.

She was in a thoughtful silence after her question was answered and Jairdain found herself rubbing the back of her neck at the thought of having something implanted. So far in her life, she had resisted any and all offers to give her vision. While this wasn't going to be the same thing exactly, it still felt like it would be similar. It would allow her to see while in this other plane.

A question lingered for her, but she kept it to herself. The answer was probably unknown even by the creator. What would her vision be like? Would it be something like the physical vision in her mind or would she still see as she did now...through the Force?

Lowering her hand when she realized it had found its way absentmindedly up, she sat back in the chair she was in and crossed her legs. Patience was needed and hopefully, when this debriefing was over, things would get started.

The sentiment was voiced by Padran and all she did was a nod in agreement.

In direct contrast to Jairdain's visible discomfort with implants, Dawn had a hard time hiding a smirk. Of course, the implant was not something she was unaware of. Virtual Holonets would require some sort of direct interface, she surmised, and her counterpart had discussed compatibility with their CyberNerv system some time before their arrival. Though the intravenous feeding tube was new information, it, too, was hardly discomforting. Rather, Dawn saw it as a distinct advantage, as her swift metabolism was the biggest drawback to utilizing her full potential. Keep those juices flowing, she chuckled in her mind.

What did give her some pause was the non-specific answer to her question. She had once recalled a similar sort of answer at a cantina when she had asked who had prepared, as she described, one of the most amazing soups in the outer rim. The answer was, to her great dissatisfaction, "the cook". In much the same way as how she left the cantina more satisfied with the soup than the answer, so, too, was her satisfaction met with the offered bounty. Perhaps she'd take the million credits and buy a trip to the Outer Rim for another round of soup.

"I'm with Mr. Scarface over there." She said with a lingering smirk and a gesture in Padran's direction. "Let's get hooked up and nab us a General."

Perhaps she could make it to Commenor, if the simulation was up to date she would have an advantage if she could make it there in a timely fashion. If not, she still thought such would make sense. Santiago. What was Santiago doing. More questions she couldn't answer, questions she couldn't ask either. Not yet. Her face stayed somewhat the same, but her eyes hopefully conveyed her message.
