PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Universal Features
    • GDI Battlenet: The Synapse Command Interface Suite utilizes a state-of-the-art operating system which pools together external and internal sensory data to automate shipboard diagnostic, internal, and mechanical functions. The system also enables the translation of such data and necessary command functions into a comprehensive holographic display to render analysis and the implementation of required actions as intuitive and automatic as possible.
    • Holographic Display: All data is conveniently and vibrantly displayed within a crystal-clear series of holographic displays.
    • Streamlined Integration: In short, one of the biggest design features of the Synapse is its ability to streamline the integration and operation of other GDI ship-board modules; reducing the overall CPU and, in some cases, energy demands of other GDI hardware.
    • Comprehensive Sensor Array: Although many of its features revolve around software and internal efficiency, the Synapse also comes with a comprehensive sensor array - providing advanced scanning technologies to allow for next-level spatial analysis - whether it be of spectral anomalies, or tactical readouts of battlefield positions.
    • Electronic Countermeasures: The “Voyager” Variant of the Synapse possesses a robust software package of ECM defenses to protect against efforts to destabilize/attack its host ship’s sensor array and automated processes, as well as potent jamming technology to attack enemy subsystems.
  • ”Strategic Command” Variant Upgrades:
    • Shipboard A.I.: Although the Voyager Variant possesses automated processes and intuitive controls to render several ship-board functions extremely easy to handle, the Strategic Command Variant takes things a step further with the integration of an advanced artificial intelligence. This A.I. is capable of assuming almost total control of ship processes at the discretion of a vessel’s captain/upper command staff, who retain(s) administrative control over the A.I.’s complete series of functions. The reaction time and computational ability of the A.I. allows for a level of management and automation that no mere mortal, and very few droids can match.
    • Strategic Command Blister: The holographic displays earlier mentioned can be replaced with an entire holographic blister that surrounds the command deck with completely holographic displays projected from floor-mounted emitters - allowing for a far greater freedom of movement throughout the bridge or command deck of a ship.
    • External Synchronization: While no ship can fully benefit from the myriad of subroutines and streamlined automation this suite affords without actually installing it aboard, the Synapse does possess the required means to facilitate a wider capability of synchronizing between its host ship and other ships of a greater fleet - going so far as to ‘handshake’ with such ships and partially take on some of their automated processes; such as in situations of target synchronization or hyperspace route jumps and calculations. This enables the host ship to ease the strain of other ships nearby, allowing for their own computers and sensors to dedicate technical resources to other tasks.
    • ECM Scramblers: While maintaining the mainline ECM defensive firmware from the Voyager series, the Strategic Command series also possesses a robust array of offensive scramblers and sensor masks capable of wreaking havoc upon enemy vessels.
STRENGTHS
  • +Streamlined Integration (Universal): (See special features)
  • +All in One Package (Universal): From the ECM Defensive Firmware, to the sensory hardware and Battlenet software, the Synapse Command Interface Suite is an ‘all in one’ package when it comes to shipboard software, and particularly shines when coupled with other GDI modules.
  • +Hardened Circuits (Universal): Great care is taken when a ship is built utilizing the Synapse in the ‘laying out’ of its circuits utilizing modern variants of hardened circuits via fine-strand tubes filled with a liquid-metallic compound. The density of the compound combined with the segmented fine-strands allows for a level of conductivity and control communication thus far unachieved using the ‘hardened circuit’ method. This makes the system highly resistant to Ion disruption.
  • +Artificial Intelligence (SC Variant): (See Special Features)
  • +Electronic Warfare (SC Variant): (See Special Features)
WEAKNESSES
  • -Permanent Upgrade (Universal): Due to the foundational nature of the Synapse system, once a ship has been equipped with the Synapse, it cannot be removed without virtually disassembling the entire ship and putting it back together - rendering this upgrade a rather permanent one. The only exception to this, is if a ship possesses the ‘Voyager Variant” of this system, it may be upgraded to the Strategic Command variant as the latter builds upon the former’s components.
  • -Proprietary (Universal): While there are several benefits to the proprietary nature of the Synapse system, there are also a few noted drawbacks based upon said proprietary nature that any prospective buyer should be aware of.
    • The most obvious is that damaged parts and components must be replaced with GDI hardware, as aftermarket modification or component replacement presents a high risk that the system will not work as intended.
    • Secondly; the ‘closed nature’ of the system’s ‘Battlenet’ operating system presents obvious benefits on the security front, but could be considered a drawback when integrating non-GDI components. While it is not impossible to do so, early reports indicate repeated warranty and commissioning requests on the part of GDI’s service department to assist in the integration of said third party modules due to programming language errors and diagnostic issues. While it is not impossible to troubleshoot and perform on one’s own, the chances of successful third party integration go up when involving GDI itself.
    • Lastly, the proprietary nature of the Synapse system places most vessels at the mercy of GDI itself with regard to patches, firmware upgrades, and hardware components. GDI has expanded training and outreach programs to circumvent this issue, and it is possible to service the system independently as earlier mentioned; but one should still consider to what extent they will utilize other GDI products prior to utilizing this specific one, as well as how reliant they wish to be on GDI in general.
  • -Liquid Metal (Universal): Despite the very nature of the system’s ‘hardened circuitry’ means of power distribution and control communication resulting in a very robust system against Ion radiation, the very nature of the liquid-metal means of conductivity presents a fringe, but not ‘non-existent’ hazard that most other means of circuiting do not present. Should the sealed casing containing the liquid-metallic substance be breached; either through excessive ship-board damage or otherwise - there is a slight chance the liquid-metal will leak through broken seams and tears within the circuitry. While countermeasures are in place to contain the highly toxic substances in such an event, it is still possible for contamination to ensue to both sentients, and in other highly sensitive systems (depending on the layout of the host ship).
  • -Artificial Intelligence (SC Variant): As noted previously, the Synapse A.I. provides many notable benefits in terms of automation and analysis. Yet, A.I. technology is still largely considered ‘breakthrough’ in nature, and is not fully understood by the galaxy at large. Although no reports have occurred (or been made public) regarding GDI’s specific A.I. technology, many within the galaxy recall other reports of said entities growing sentient, and going rogue from their organic masters. GDI’s subsidiary known as ‘Guardian Synthetic Innovations (GSI)’ has released a plethora of PR material to assure galactic consumers that the risk of this is exceedingly low regardless.
DESCRIPTION
With yet another highly unorthodox offering, GDI’s subsidiaries ‘Guardian Synthetic Innovations’ and ‘Guardian Defense Engineering’ have partnered together to develop and release the highly optimized ‘Synapse’ Command Interface Suite. Combining both hardware components and software via the ‘Battlenet’ Operating System, the Synapse system promises to be the last word in comprehensive ship management and sensing technology. Currently, the system has entered the market with two distinct variants; the ‘Voyager Variant’, which caters to more generalized applications on a mass-produced level, and the ‘Strategic Command’ variant which provides added functionality specially designed for more intensive battlefield applications.

Both variants bring with them the GDI guarantee of high quality, with the unique benefit of streamlining the integration of GDI modules into a unified system; reducing both the CPU and power requirements of countless offensive, engineering, and support systems. As specifications spread abroad the galactic community, remote offices and service centers are seeing orders piling in record numbers - both in full scale retrofit packages, and in the requisitioning of new ship orders; both of those currently in the market, and in conceptualized versions currently in development.
