- Reliable: The Nemesis is created for ruggedness, able to survive lengthy periods without maintenance and withstand almost any type of dirt or corrosion imaginable.
- Silent: Advanced noise-baffling systems ensure the bow makes little to no noise when firing (except on higher settings, when arrows will easily break the sound barrier).
- Multi-Setting: The Nemesis is able to function simply as a normal bow, or as a more sophisticated, modernized system capable of launching projectiles with enormous force.
- Single-Shot: For all its technological sophistication, the system is still ultimately a bow, able to fire but a single shot at a time, and usually none too quickly.
- Muscle-Powered: The Nemesis' true power requires enormous physical strength (or force-sensitivity) and less mighty beings may not be able to fully utilize the system.
A modern take on perhaps the oldest projectile weapon in history, the Nemesis system is an unusual tool created for Helix's in-house army.
At first glance a simple, if well-constructed modern bow, the weapon's true sophistication is well-hidden. Virtually every aspect of the bow is customizable, including the draw weight via a complex artificial density system that enables changing the arms' tension strength in seconds. These range from a beginner-friendly 25-pound to a staggering 1500-pound weight. This latter is well in excess of typical humanoid athletic ability, but to droid users (or organics of enormous/Force-augmented physical strength) it can allow them to project an arrow capable of skewering a charging Rancor or splitting the trunk of a young wroshyr tree.
What's more, the bow is capable of magnetically assisting the projectile moments after launch, adding even more force behind the impact. This, however, negates the weapon's stealth advantage, as doing so normally results in the arrow breaking the sound barrier and travelling at significantly supersonic velocities.
For those users who prefer a (somewhat) more traditional archery experience, these systems can easily be switched on or off, enabling the Nemesis to function as a regular compound bow. However, the user will then have to make any draw weight adjustments by partly-disassembling the bow (no easy task when one is under fire, or fending off a carnivorous jungle beast).
The standard arrows themselves are bladed broadheads, made with the same molecular forging process as the bow itself. These are excellent for slicing through tough animal hide (or humanoid armor), particularly when the weapon is operated on higher settings. Interestingly, the shaft is composed of several thin, telescoping segments that lock together via magnetic polarization, allowing a great many of them to be carried comfortably.
These collapsed arrows are contained in a small ammunition box built into the riser, negating the need for the wielder to carry a quiver. When triggered, the feed system ejects and activates an arrow, which extends to its full length, ready for easy shooting. As with many of the bow's features, this bizarre innovation is optional, and can be removed for those preferring to carry their arrows in a quiver.
The string is made of thin strands of helsteel and armorweave, woven finely together to form an incredibly wear-resistant launching platform. Short of a direct weapon strike, these will seldom break under any but the worst wear and tear.
In fact, the overall package is astoundingly durable, and makes for an excellent survival tool. Provided that users can successfully retrieve spent arrows, the Nemesis can theoretically allow a band of guerrilla soldiers to continue operating without external supply indefinitely.
Given the top-notch materials used (and the correspondingly significant cost) this weapon is fairly rare, usually only issued to Helix's elite ranger units, and even then only to companies expected to operate for long periods away from resupply. More rarely still, wealthy clients have been known to purchase them by special order.
