  • Modularity: Yes
  • Production: Minor

SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Functions as a Path Engine
  • Can transport its parent vessel to and through other dimensions (such as Otherspace)

STRENGTHS
  • Fast Travel: The Redline engine is capable of utilizing and tunnelling hyperspace paths, allowing it to transport a ship or ships without regard to hyperspace lanes.
  • Voidskip: The Redline is capable of performing close-range jumps over short distances, as is typical for a Path engine.
  • You Saw Nothing: The Redline is capable of travelling to and through other dimensions as an alternative to Hyperspace, though this is commensurately slower and more dangerous.
WEAKNESSES
  • Grav-Crush: Usage of the Redline places significant stress on the hull of its parent vessel, limiting its practical use to shorter journeys. Longer usages can and will cause hull damage.
  • Living Brain: The Redline is at least partly organic in nature. Oddly enough, it can begin to tire if its precision-jump capabilities are utilized too often in a short period, rendering the engine entirely inoperable for an extended time.
  • Teleportation Mishap: A badly-damaged Redline drive can potentially misfire, transporting its users in a randomized direction to a randomized distance (often with fatal consequences).
DESCRIPTION

Developed as part of a Dzara initiative to avoid wider scrutiny behind the Blackwall, the Redline is used to facilitate piracy, terror, and slavery.

In effect an advanced form of Path Engine (plus a few innovations of its own), the Redline offers a variety of benefits over more conventional hyperdrive systems.

Like many Dzara technologies, this device appears grown as much as made. In truth, it is the result of an unpleasant fusion of repurposed flesh, metal, and mostly-intact nervous system of a live Helslug. The device amplifies and sharpens the Helslug's natural dimension-hopping capabilities, quickening its response times.

The Redline enjoys a degree of speed and accuracy that has few precedents in the wider galaxy. As with its more primitive predecessors of centuries ago, it enables its parent ship to defy conventional hyperspace logic, bypassing the need for traditional routes. A Redline engine can pinpoint-drop a vessel within mere kilometers of its desired impact point, from nearly any place in the galaxy (in theory). On the smaller scale, these arcane devices can enable a ship to perform smaller, quicker micro-jumps over short distances.

Given that the machine is (at least partly) of Helslug ancestry, it is not only capable of performing these maneuvers itself, but bringing other nearby vessels with it. This ability applies even if the vessel or vessels in question do not themselves possess Redline drives, but the vessels in question must have their own hyperdrives primed and ready. Thus, the system cannot involuntarily move other vessels around. Despite the clear utilities therein, doing so significantly increases strain upon the engine's organic components, increasing the chances of a fatal mishap.

Last, but certainly not least, the Redline is capable of entering non-Hyperspace dimensions, a capability also inherited from the Helslug used in its construction.

This particular feature was developed with great caution, and under the very strictest operational security. Crucially, this allows a Redline-capable vessel to pass through Stormseeded areas in realspace, such as the Sith Blackwall. Given the frequently less-than-legal nature of their activities, the Dzara cherishes this capability above all others.

Of course, safety and sanity are always far-distant, secondary considerations to Helix. Perhaps the device's most glaring design flaw is the significant magnetic stressors placed on the hull of vessels utilizing it. While the Redline can in theory place a ship almost anywhere the user might want, in practice, any captain wishing to survive transit usually keeps his travels short and sweet. Longer jumps are best accomplished by "skipping" into Realspace at regular intervals to allow the ship (and its engine) a break.

Redline drives are known to be temperamental, and a damaged or destroyed drive can inflict a bevy of unpleasant fates upon its crew. Not least of these is accidental transportation into the surface of a planet or star, or so far away that return travel is effectively impossible, inflicting a slow death by starvation.

Despite these risks, the Redline is the perfect raider's hyperdrive, offering fast travel times under the noses of authorities.
