LFG Galactic Department of Justice - Interest Check

In this thread I started asking if there were any cops around to tell cop stories. As it turns out there were more than I knew and several people said it might be easier to get a group together than to try to fit all the characters into one thread. So I am giving it a shot.

What is the Galactic Department of Justice?
A minor faction that will allow us to tell cop stories on a big galactic level. Instead of being Correllian Police or Coruscant Police, we would be police that could go to different systems once we are invited in, and solve crimes. It would also be open to legal type characters who want to play lawyers and obviously open to people who want to play the criminals we catch.

What is most important to know before I read further?
ONE: The main thing to note is that this is a faction or NON FORCE USERS. The idea here is just to tell average cop stories. If you want to be a Sith or Jedi or other badass FU we have awesome factions to do that. This is just more for those every day slice of life characters that don't really fit too many places.

TWO: The second thing to note is that this is not a military. This isn't designed to get involved in the map game at all. The idea is we travel to planets and solve crimes, catch bad guys, prosecute, run prisons, etc. It's like the FBI in America that serves all the states. We just want to serve all the planet sand not limit ourselves to one law enforcement agency.

THREE: The third thing to note is that this is a work in progress. I'm happy to talk about it if anybody has ideas. I think we also have some awesome criminal factions that would be fun to team up with (if this gets enough interest obviously).

FOUR: This probably works best if you are making a new character devoted to this faction (or are a criminal interacting with us) since it's a non-partisan group and we don't get involved in faction war (maybe we mediate if asked but we don't fight.). For example I don't see how a Jedi serving the Republic would fit into a group that pushes no larger political agenda, or how a Mando would do if we went to a system allowing slavery and were asked to capture slaves that escape. The goal here is we uphold laws on the systems we are invited into. We don't uphold our own ideas of justice or take the law into our own hands.

EDIT: so to clarify the above point ^ this doesn't mean characters have to do things by the books all the time. It means that realistically your character would need to get hired by this organization so you have to appear neutral. See this post for a better explanation.

So if that still sounds interesting to you here is a little blurb to sort of describe what I'm thinking. I'd love to brainstorm of see what others think.

Galactic Department of Justice

The Galactic Department of Justice (GDJ) is a lawfully neutral division of police and other justice serving individuals who desire to uphold the laws and protect the citizens of any planet in the galaxy. The GDL does not get involved in galactic politics, choosing instead to protect and serve wherever they are needed. Any planet or system may invite the GDL to assist on a mission or help citizens.

While other agencies are more military focused the GDL is at its core a very strong police force and other representatives of the criminal justice system. The group consists solely of non-Force-using individuals who take an oath to uphold the laws of any planet, system, or civilization they serve. These individuals do not work for any government. Many of the members were the best and brightest of famous law enforcement agencies such as CorSec, who were drafted to serve the galaxy as a whole. While this group will not fight a war for you, what they can do is assist in cases such as theft, homicide, terrorism, organized crime, and relatable crimes.

Types of Characters:
Law Enforcement– These consist of the bulk of the faction and come in many varieties such as beat cops, detectives, criminal investigators, forensic specialists, SWAT personnel, crime scene investigators, Marshall's, bounty hunters, medical examiners, and even truancy officers, and prison wardens. Every member of this group has sworn to protect and serve wherever the job takes them.

Legal – Upholding the law on so many different planets and systems can get complicated and that's where these characters come in. Legal characters consist of criminal lawyers, public defendants, tax attorneys, business attorneys, and other legal representatives that do their best to ensure that each citizen served is aware of their rights and that justice is truly being upheld to the highest degree.

Criminals– You can't have cops without robbers' rights? Well, these characters are the best at being bad. Whether they are locked away in one of the many prisons the GDL helps oversee, or they are currently wanted, or they are about to enter the scene the criminals are a driving force behind the faction and its goals.

Faction Organization:
Attorney General – this is the ultimate leader of the faction. The legal and law enforcement branches report ultimately to this individual.

Police Commissioner – leader of the law enforcement branch

District Attorney – leader of the legal branch

Kingpin – Leader of organized crime in the faction (for those that wanna organize).

Faction Ranks: (Work in Progress)

Law Enforcement Branch:
  • Captain
  • Detective
  • Officer

Legal Branch:
  • Partner
  • Attorney
  • Associate

Criminal: (anybody got better ones?)
  • Crime Boss
  • Under boss
  • Soldier

What We Need:
  • Players
  • People willing to help with graphics.
  • People willing to help with factory/codex submissions.
  • Other factions willing to work with us

So if you made it this far then just let me know if this sounds like something you would be willing to make a character for or help us in some of those other ways mentioned.

Thanks for reading

The united alien uprising faction will be happy to be one of your enemies. UAU is kind of a terrorist faction hoping for more alien equality. We are mainly based on Coruscant, but there are UAU cells starting to rise on other worlds too.

or how a Mando would do if we went to a system allowing slavery and were asked to capture slaves that escape.
A very valid point. We're (at least per Enclave, can't speak for others) are strongly against slavery. So is RTL. I'd thought about bringing in my space cop Django Parata Django Parata , but something like that would just not sit well with him. However, if you find yourselves near RTL or Enclave territory, you definitely have allies who would be willing to support your good deeds.

I think that makes for wonderful character development personally. Think about all the times an officer has to arrest someone for stealing, even though they are in a low income bracket and may not have had any choice. Wouldn't that eat you up inside? Would you be tempted to let the person go? Maybe your supposed to round up these slaves but.... somehow you "accidentally" let them escape and then your police commissioner reams you a new one and now your taking heat at work because you didn't do it "by the book." To me that's a good story and it's always some of the most enjoyable episodes on any cop show when the lead character has to struggle against professional and personal values.

I think average characters will work in a faction like this because they can let things slide and toe that line between a good cop and a good person. But i think just as an industry it might be hard to justify hiring say for example a Sith if the assignment was to assist the Jedi in rounding up a dark side cult breaking laws on Coruscant. If your character doesn't have any screaming obvious bias and you think they could give a good talk about how they can remain neutral in an interview then realistically this organization would hire you.

if that makes sense? Sorry if I didn't explain it very well. I didn't mean the characters had to follow the rules all the time. I mean more like... an an organization like PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) isn't going to hire someone whose an avid hunter. But I'm sure there are members of PETA who hunt.. they just don't go bragging about it because they don't wanna get fired. If that makes sense?

that sounds great! If we get enough interest and this gets off the groud I'd love to do something with UAU.

I like this idea, this can give a Hafey a chance to finally shine after many many MANY years unused. Whether it be legally becoming more attorney based or turning into a crime scene investigator. It can work out for this character.

Sorry folks... the semester is starting and I am both a professor and a student this year so my life is a little crazy.

I still think this could be a good faction but I'm not sure I have the most time to run it. Does anybody else feel like doing it? If not I still can... it just might be very very slow.
