Fortress on Umbara

Diana stood on the bridge of one of three Unity-Class Assault ships, her expression stoic and serious. Behind her a dozen ensigns toiled away at their computers, and a handful of officers stood at the command table talking about her behind. Diana chose to ignore them, knowing that their mission here was too important to go on sexist rant about. She smirked slightly as she turned about to face the men and they immediately shut up, apparently they were afraid of her. Slowly she waltzed over to them, her expression softening.
“Is everything ready?” Diana asked with a certain hint of eagerness to her voice. She was excited about this, this would be a first for her. They were here to build a fortress, a Jedi Fortress. It was an outpost of great importance, one that the Grandmaster @[member="Selena Halcyon"] herself had wanted to see built.

The world of Umbara had a dark history, Sith had had an academy here, the Clone Wars had been fought here, and a few other dark events had occurred upon this world. That however was part of why the fortress would be erected here, why the Jedi wanted to re-brand the world as a fortress. Umbara was the perfect location to build a Jedi Fortress. It was a Fringe world, on the edges of Republic space and a bulwark against the Sith and Black Sun. The perfect place to build a fortress world.

The fortress itself would be manned by a hundred Jedi Knights a few Masters and a few thousand Republic troopers. It was in case the world was ever invaded by Sith, in case the worst came to pass.

“Yes Ma'am”

One of the Officers answered her and she smiled. “Good. Then lets get this show on the road.”

Diana smiled at the men, and the Three Unity-Class Assault Ships edged forward towards the planet of Umbara. Each of the three ships was not filled with troops, but instead supplies. Engineer's, durasteel, and hundreds of different things all for the construction of this fortress.

Quickly the three unity-Class assault ship broached the atmosphere of Umbara, burning through the sky and nestling in a deep valley on the planet.

@[member="Diana Moridena"]

"Please start the warm down procedures on all engines. Run reports and diagnostic through all systems. Keep the scanner array open and contact me immediately if anything unusual appears, I don't want any surprises. We are in unknown territory so keep a keen eye out for trouble", Iella asked the crew and the Unity-Class Assault Ship landed along side the small fleet. She rose from the commander seat on the bridge and turned to a crew member, "Inform the chief of Engineering that we have arrived and he can begin".

She walked back to the navigation and flight crew, "Keep this prepared for departure", she spoke softly, "If we do encounter trouble I want to be able to get our people out as fast as possible".

Iella walked back to her quarters to prepare for the mission. A Jedi Fortress, a stronghold on the edge of Republic space, a key in the defense of all it's citizens. Once prepared in her Jedi Robes with weapons by her side, her personal blaster, a whip and her lightsaber, Iella decided it was time to take a look at this planet of Umbara and to meet Knight Diana Moridena. Outside bustled the construction droids and engineers, she could see a large crew unload the supplies of durasteel, equipment and tools. Another team erecting units for conveniences. She looked around to see the valley and took in some fresh air.

On the comlink Iella opened up a channel to the lead ship. "Knight Moridena, Knight E`ron here", she said with a slight smile that would have come through her voice. "The ship is unload and ready for orders". She said and waited.

On board one of the Unity-Class Assault ships, a young Padawan stood ready... although the nature of the mission didn't call for troops; Vex was ready with his whole recon uniform and gear. One of his missions would be to verify the perimeter and to scout the area making sure that they could start with the development and the setup of the fortress... to provide some room for the engineers to work.

To perform the job, he had a squadron of 7 Republic Scouts with their respective speeders and several R-X recon droids as support for the recon team. The young Padawan dressed in his Unit 7 Covert Armor, his Sniper on the back, his blaster on the shoulder holster and his lightsaber clipped on the belt along with his own speeder ready... he was just waiting for the team to assamble in the docking bay for them to be deploy on site.

Within just a few minutes, they were all ready, and they had their orders, but as squad leader he had to provide a short briefing before going to the ground.

"Allright Eagles..." the name of the team was choosen by popular vote, not an original name but one that fit their purpose for the mission "...mission is simple, we scout the area for any hostiles and we make sure that the perimeter is secured. We will all go in 8 different directions base on the cardinal points of the planet, once that we are 10 kilometers away from the landing site, we deploy the R-X Droids to perform their job. Make sure that you have your video recording enabled in the HUD. We need to provide live feedback to the Mission Command. Keep radio communication to the minimum, we will receive our orders from Mission Command and I'll relay them. Understood?"

Since they were military personnel, they all replied with a normal "Yes Sir". Vex didn't care about such reply to be honest, they were all snipers, recon units, they understood the mission parameters and were not used to the soldier jargon and procedures, they were special commandos for special missions and Vexander knew that.

Opening a channel, the corellian proceeded to contact the Knights in charge of the Operation: @[member="Diana Moridena"] and @Iella E`ron . "Padawans Graves here, the Eagle team is ready to deploy once we land. We'll be back in no time... over"

Diana smiled slightly as she looked around, things began to move fast as the Unity Assault ships landed. The Ships began to unload, the engineers began to get to work, and everything began to move forward. The Knight couldn't help but smile, the fortress would be erected quickly. A matter of weeks instead of months. The Republic had devoted quite a bit to this little venture, and doing so would help the Jedi greatly. Suddenly a comm-link chirped and Diana heard the voice of a fellow Knight.

Technically everyone on Umbara was under her command, she had been placed in charge of this project as a way of forward thinking. During her time within the Silent Conclave Diana had learned a thing or two about building fortresses and commanding men, now that she returned she was using those skill.

Being in charge however meant that she was not going to be friendly, and as she answered the comm her voice was chipper and almost cheerful “Good. Lets get to work immediately. If you would join me on my ship we can speak about the plans.”

Diana smiled as her holo-message was sent over. Quickly she then turned about and addressed a hundred other things. Another message quickly found its way to her ear, and once again she replied with a cheerful response.

“Be safe and return as fast as possible.” Her voice was one of command, and it seemed to inspire those on the bridge around her. Work began on the fortress of Umbara.

"May the force be with you Vexander", Iella replied as she heard both messages on the comlink. "Be right there Knight Moridena".

She looked into the skies and noted Vexander's ship, soon everything would be in place for the plans of the fortress. She walked to the lead ship and entered, only taking a small amount of time to locate the Knight. The bridge busy with orders and operations, as was the ship Iella lead this mission. She walked over to the Knight and spoke.

"The supplies are unloaded and the team beginning to set inventory", she said as she approached. "Pleasure to meet you finally, Knigth Moridena, I am Iella E`ron, so what are your orders?".

The young man heard the confirmation from the project owner and Iella. With a nod and a communication through the channel, he confirmed the launch "Roger that Command, May the Force be with both of you... Eagle Team on route!" Those words marked the begining of their operation, with a move in his right foot, he pressed the pedal of the speeder launching him at an amazing speed that couldn't be easily matched, not even with Force Speed because eventually a Jedi would get tired.

Behind him, he could sense the other 5 members of the team split up to their different locations, while 3 of them were following in formation to his left and right... however, with each passing meter, they began to stir apart from his side and went wide to the Northeast and Northwest which they would cover while he continued heading south.

The young man looked at his surroundings making sure that the video recorder was picking up all details of the desolated place and relaying them at the Command Center, without signs of life or any threat for the moment; he just kept going with the speeder at the designated waypoint to place the probe. Using the Force to increase his scouting skills, he attempted to remain in full alert at any disturbance or inminent danger.

Diana welcomed the other Knight with a polite bow and a smile. The plan was of course to build the fortress, it was an undertaking that would take several weeks, but it would be started now. The process of construction would be rather boring, and overseeing it all would be even more so. The thing about Umbara however was that it wasn't entirely...friendly. There was a rebel group here who did not welcome the Jedi, they still harbored hate form nearly a thousand years ago.

They disliked the idea of the Jedi building a fortress here, and they would likely try to stop it. The Umbaran government had warned of these separatists and it was the Reason that the Republic had sent soldiers, and not just engineers.

“Please, call me Diana.” Diana finally said as she bade Iella come over to the large holo-projector in the center of the bridge. On top of it was a neatly refined image of the valley they had nestled in. The projector itself was displaying months ahead, showing the building process of the fortress and the completed project. “The Umbarans have warned us of a separatist movement, one that does not take kindly to our being here.”

She frowned slightly as she pointed to the entrance points to the valley. “We need to place outposts at all these locations and ensure they're secure.”

@[member="Diana Moridena"], @[member="Vexander Graves"]

Iella nodded to Diana as she moved toward the holo-projector, she walked around it as Diana spoke telling her of the separatists and their hostile feelings toward the Jedi. She looked over the position of where the fortress is to be built and the two entrances into the valley, she is a little surprised by it's location down in the valley as usually the high ground is a more preferred option, but the natural defences of the valley could prove useful as high walls, there are pluses and minuses .. but the Diana is correct they need outposts at both entrances.

"Padawan Graves is out scouting the area of possible hostiles now, I have my ship on alert to inform us of any unidentified ships entering orbit and atmosphere through the scanner, the engineers do not need us just hanging around, so shall I take one end and you the other?, we can set up teams to go", she said smiling happy to be useful again.

Equa hated the fact, that Umbara hated the Republic. He didn't like its culture and political ideals at all. They didn't care about freedom... the people were dumb. So that's why Equa decided to join the Jedi who had come to Umbara to build a Jedi Fortress. He had come to Umbara some time ago and he had had conflicts with a few people already. That's why he decided to do something different. Jedi had to bring normality to the planet. The Republic had to talk some sense to the people of Umbara. A fortress was the first step towards it.

Equa reached the place which was chosen for the Fortress.

“Yes.” Diana said in answer to the other woman. This was exactly what she had planned. She honestly doubted that the teams would need oversight in setting up their command posts, but it would be good to get out of the ship and do some actual helping. Besides if the team ran into any trouble Diana and Iella would be able to help out. She was unsure of the weaponry the separatist Umbarans had, but she doubted they would go after any of the Republic troopers if they weren't well equipped.

Quickly Diana turned on her heel, walking over to one of the officers and whispering something to the man. She then turned about and once again faced @Iella E'Ron. “The Teams will be setting up in the Hangar.”

She smiled at the other Jedi Knight then moved into the turbo-lift at the back of the hall, waiting for her companion.

After almost twenty to thirty minutes, several messages through the comlink came reporting the status of the droids. The feedback and reports generated by all of them were transmited back to the Command Center in no time along with the live feed of the Video Recording within the hud of the Alpha 7 armors.

The young man stopped his speeder completely and looked at the horizon, nothing could be seen at all due to the type of atmosphere the planet had... the sun from the system was just not able to go through and it could never be seen in the sky of the place. Still, he could feel the Force at his surroundings and how it flowed through the plants around and the whole air... it was strong and at the same time it was... refreshing.

Knowing that the perimeter was set, the young man opened a channel back to Knight @[member="Diana Moridena"] and Knight @Iella E`ron "Eagle Leader to Base, perimeter is up and operational. Requesting further orders... over" the young man didn't know if there was anything else that the Eagle team could do, and knew that most likely they would return to base to help with the construction efforts... but, regardless of what they would instruct the man, he was ready to comply for the Operation's sake.

@Diana Moridena, @Vexander Graves, @[member="Equa Dominator"]

Iella followed Diana into the turbo-lift and opened a comlink to her ship. "Report in please", she simply asked.

"Knight E`ron, there is no changes to the status, skies are clear, repeat .. skies are clear". Came the quick reply from the bridge crew. She turned to Diana and smiled, "Well no surprises from the sky .. yet. And please call me Iella".

At that moment a communication came through from Vexander. He had set the scouts and now requested orders, Iella looked toward Diana, as this is her project. "It would be good to have his experience with us back in the hangar and help either you or I set up the outposts. At this point, Iella was unaware of the presence of Equa Dominator.

(I am going to timeskip us forward a week or two into construction and then have the Umbarans stage an attack, I feel it helps move the thread along and will provide us some action)
Diana had no illusions about this assignment, it was boring, not very fulfilling, and quite honestly probably didn't need this many Jedi. To her however that didn't matter. This was the first assignment she had gotten that she felt truly mattered. Umbara would become a bulwark against the Sith, a wall that they could not pass. This world would become the first of many defensive outliers in the Republic. She knew that it was needed, and she would see it constructed fast.

“Perhaps. I would rather keep him in the sky.” Diana said as the turbo-lift reached the hangar bay. The Jedi Knight stepped out of the lift and into the hangar, surveying the troopers getting ready. She nodded as some of them saluted her. “I'm not sure I trust our Umbaran friends completely...at least not some of them.”

Diana was obviously referring to the Rebels on this world. She trusted the government as much as she could. Aside from that the setting up of the outposts would not be difficult, and likely they would be finished before Vex could even land. She simply placed a hand on Iella's shoulder to comfort her. “Set up the outpost and then return here. We still have much to do.”

~~

Two weeks later Diana stood on a nearly empty bridge of her Unity class Assault ship. Rain poured down with thunderous uproar outside of the ship and a thick and heavy fog seemed to cut the air. Umbara's weather was quite insane this type of year, and construction on the fortress had been halted for a few days due to the storms.

Even with the pause however the Fortress had come a long way within the last two weeks. Thanks to the aid of loyal Umbarans, construction droids, and many engineers the fortress was more than halfway down. The central spire of the Fortress now stood, and some of the buildings surrounding it were almost done. Halfway built walls lined around the Fortress itself, the tower nestled directly into the side of a cliff to make sure it could not be infiltrated from the back. The Fortress was coming to life quickly, and Diana was glad to see it.

“Well, as soon as the rains stop we should only be here for another two weeks.” Diana said out loud to the fellow Jedi on the bridge. As soon as the words left her mouth, as if by some sort of cosmic coincidence the alarms began to blare. In an instant Diana's head snapped to the side, looking at her comm-officer. A voice garbled over the static, and scream could be heard.

“Help us! U- Attack!”

Diana scowled, the Separatists had finally made their move. “Lock down the ships. Get everyone inside. I want patrols out in full combat gear!”

Diana barked orders as fast as she could, it seemed the storm was not her only worry.

A shuttle pulled into the hangar bay of the Unity class Assault ship, Rasu Gan exited the ship via the extended boarding ramp, lowering the hood on her robe to get a better look at the near empty hangar. It's amazing to think they've done so much in only a few weeks, the Shi'ido thought to herself. The Padawan had heard of the Republic's efforts to build a massive fortress on the surface of Umbara and to be honest she had thought the task would be nearly impossible. The native Umbaran's had never been exactly fond of the Republic and it's Jedi guardians so Rasu was surprised when she arrived to find progress speeding ahead. Leaving the hangar, the Shi'ido took the turbo-lift up to the bridge where she planned to ask for a report from the projects leading commander, Jedi Knight @[member="Diana Moridena"]. The High Council had sent her to the forbidding world to see how the fortresses progress was coming along and what the situation of the construction crew were. Rasu had eagerly accepted the mission, excited to be leaving Coruscant and joining her fellow Jedi out of the Temple. Everything seems to be going well so far, she thought. However upon exiting the lift, she entered the bridge which conveyed a totally different impression of the current situation. Alarms were blaring inside the area, as personnel ran from station to station, panic emanating from their Force aura's. Picking up her walking pace, she made it to the front of the bridge, where a woman was hastily issuing orders to different members of the crew. Rasu assumed that this could only be the Jedi Knight she had came to see, so waited patiently for a break in the tide of swarming crew members. When the moment arrived, the Padawan lightly tapped the woman on the shoulder to grab her attention before saying, "Sorry to interrupt Master, Padawan Rasu Gan. The High Council sent me to get a progress report from you but I can see you're a bit busy at the moment. May I ask what the situation is?"

@Diana Moridena, @Vexander Graves, @Equa Dominator, @[member="Rasu Gan"]

Iella took in the fresh clean air high up on the ridge at the southern end of the valley. So far the building of the fortress is running to plan and on time. The outpost had been established and maintained by several groups of Jedi skill in combat. She turned her head to see the other outpost she had position on the other ridge which would provide cover for the entrance at this end. Padawan Graves had establish a well thought out plan and had the scouts patrolling constantly with regular updates reporting in. It had been raining and raining still so the air is clean and invigorating to the senses. Iella, constantly in connection to the force now, rested against her back against the large trunk of a tree and she sat on the soft grass, just letting her meditation take her where it willed. As much as the threat remained there was no sign of any dissidence but she kept the vigil none the less, through the force.

But her repose was to be cut short, as the small sign of an event about to happen whispered to her, from time to time, the force reaches out to her giving her of glimpses of future events. Only in meditation does this happen and it happened now. She immediately stood up and looked back toward the ships stationed near the fortress. "I want two squadrons of combat units to meet me at the base of valley, immediately", she said into her com link to the commander. "We are going back to the ship", she ended the communication.

Iella would inform Vexander, now patrolling, "Padawan Graves, we have a situation back a the fortress, I can sense something is about to happen. I am returning with two combat units, we can not leave the outpost unman, meet back at the fortress please and bring as many as you can spare". She was not sure of his location, but know Vexander he would be in reaching distance.

The incoming transmission was clear, the Eagles had to be recalled from their normal duties early in the morning. Based on the information provided by Knight @Iella E`ron, the whole Eagles were needed... especially in defending the construction site and efforts. A recall of such magnitude meant only one thing: inminent attack from an unknown force yet to be encountered.

Vexander signaled all the members of the team as soon as he could "Eagle team, this is Eagle Leader. Return to the base at full speed and await for further orders." Without even waiting for the reply of the rest of the men, he turned his speeder and, with the move of his wrist; he accelarated until he got to the hangar of one of the Unity class ships.

------------------------------

Several passed by, and the whole Eagle team began to gather... since patrolling was his duty, they were inmediately tasked to get out there in full combat gear... however, they were practically ready since Vexander always had his up his toes. Doing one last inspection, he proceeded to provide individual orders:

"Ok team, we are still the Eagles, and therefore, is our duty to secure the perimeter... however, we are decreasing our perimeter to the inmediate base of operations. Eagle 9, 10 and 11 will patrol the area. Eagle 7 and 8, focus on their locations and cover their backs from the nests close to their location, Eagle 2 through 6, get to your designated nests. Rotate fire between each one of you to avoid giving in individual locations... we will confuse them." An inmediate and unison "Aye" confirmed the understanding of all the team "Very well, move out team!"

The snipers and scouts left the hangar and each one of them went out, to the cold and dark rain filled with fog that affected vision, however, the eagles were remarkable and their Alpha 7 Covert Armors had the equipment to be deadlier in this kind of situation. With plenty of confidence in his team, the young man quickly proceeded to contact at the Knights Iella E`ron and @[member="Diana Moridena"] "Mission Command, this is Eagle Leader, I have my team patrolling and in their nests. I am going out as well"

Checking his sniper's ammo, the young man headed out with his senses completely atuned with the Force to a special nest he had to cover his whole team and the whole area, a nest above the highest part of the Unity Class ship that provided him a 360° field of vision... deadliest place for a sniper to be.

A considerable amount of time had passed since the Jedi order sent Jedi to Umbara to build a fortress. Equa had joined them because of obvious reasons. He was an Umbaran, he was a Jedi and he happened to be on Umbara when he heard about the plans. And now they had been quite successful already... Or at least in Equa's opinion. He knew some people think the fortress should be a bit more... completed. But these things took time...

At the moment, Equa was meditating a bit away from the fortress. He was behind an object. He didn't even remember what the thing was, but possibly it was a tent or a box or something like that. Or it was a rock... The weather was terrible, but he liked it. It gave him the warm feeling like he had never left home. And the best thing was meditating with this weather.

Before the break he took from the Jedi stuff, he had struggled staying on the Lightness. She almost fell to the Darkness. He had almost become crazy... But he managed to come back to the right side. He became normal again. And he started thinking about inner peace.

That's why he meditated here... when he should've worked like everyone else here.

The Umbaran Government or any elements thereof would not offer any resistance to the establishment of the Jedi fortress. Both the population and the ruling caste approved of the bastion being established. Especially when it offered them increased protection from the Sith Empire. Though most Umbarans cared little for the Jedi and were perhaps Dark-sided by nature, they knew full well what it would come to if Sith ships appeared in orbit. To refuse increased defensive measures or even attack said defensive measures would be foolhardy. Especially when the Republic had not done anything to wrong them thusly, barring that one unfortunate incident revolving around pirates and an abandoned academy.

No Umbarans were coming to attack the Jedi fortress. Because that would be stupid of them.

(I called them separatists for a reason. Umbara has a population of billions, it is highly unlikely that ALL Umbarans everywhere agree with the decisions of the Umbaran government. There are bound to be a few thousand(if not million) Detractors who are willing to go to extremes, much like in real life. The Thread will continue as planned, if you feel i have treated you or the situation unfairly feel free to contact an RPJ with grievances.)
Diana was almost in a panic now. Separatists were attacking, and they meant to do harm. She called out to everyone on the bridge, making sure that everything would run smoothly. Combat teams would be sent out, starfighters would be placed in the air, and everything else would move quickly. Jedi were heading out, one by one they checked in with Diana. She nodded more to herself than anything else. It would be good to have Iella back here, though it seemed the Separatists were mostly going for the fortress itself rather than the three Unity class assault ships.

She doubted this was anything but a hit and run tactic, and a frown pulled on her face as she began to think. She wanted so badly to go out and fight, but she knew doing so would be foolish.

Suddenly a tap on her shoulder startled her. The knight nearly jumped into the air as she whirled around and faced her would be attacker. Eyes like bugs she looked at the tiny Jedi, sighing in relief. “We're under attack young padawan.”

Diana answered quickly in response as she swept past the young lady and to the holo-display.

“@[member="Vexander Graves"], get me eyes on the enemy. I want to know their location. @Iella E' ron, get here as fast as possible and protect the fortress.” Diana frowned as she ordered around her fellow Jedi. She would stay in the ship and coordinate the defense. Worryingly she bit her lower lip. This was going to be an interesting night.

Under Attack?!?! That would explain everyone's panic, Rasu thought. The Shi'ido hadn't expected to encounter any violence on her trip to Umbara, but the Force it seemed like to prove the Padawan wrong on most occasions. Gripping her lightsaber to calm her nerves, she hurried to catch up to the Jedi Knight who had walked off again, continuing to issue new orders.

Waiting for a break in the bombardment of her orders, she interrupted again, "My apologies again, Master, but is there anything that I might do to assist in this situation? I know I'm not part of this project, but I am here if you need me." Knowing that the woman's patience would be wearing thin in this current situation, Rasu hoped that she wasn't coming across as a pest to the human Jedi. Although Rasu was not originally apart of the fortress project, she was eager and willing to help her fellow Jedi, the Shi'ido was always prepared to defend herself and her friends. Taking a step back from the holo-display, she waited patiently for a the Jedi Knight to call upon her.
