Force User Creation tips

I have been roleplaying on this site for a little while now.
I have only really created and threaded as non force using
characters and i have decided that it's time to change.

I am wondering if anyone could give me any useful tips on
how to create a user of the force?
For example
  • How to make a more unique bio without it sounding to cliche and stereotypical?
  • I know you start at the bottom, but do you get to chose certain skills? or do you have to learn them all?
  • Is there a place or faction where new force using characters can meet people like them?
  • Who decides when you get to raise your rank in the Jedi etc?

I know these questions may sound a bit basic but force using
characters are new territory for me and i don't want to mess up
my first major force using character.

All help will be greatly appreciated :)

  • How to make a more unique bio without it sounding to cliche and stereotypical?
Well in truth even unique bios will become cliche, it is hard to be unique but most of the obscure ways of becoming a force user have become just as common as being raised in the temple. Everyone has a history of things they did before learning they could do it and for the most part it won't be acknowledged in the grand scheme unless you bring it up. So go with something you can remember easily for story purposes with some people.
  • I know you start at the bottom, but do you get to chose certain skills? or do you have to learn them all?
You can do it pretty much however you want to do it. You can be a fresh faced padawan who is a blank slate or someone with a special talent.
  • Is there a place or faction where new force using characters can meet people like them?
The Jedi order under [member="Shmi Labooda"], the Republic's force enclave, the Silver Sanctum Coalition with [member="Thurion Heavenshield"] and [member="Coci Heavenshield"], the New Jedi Order with [member="Ryan Korr"]. Me and him might not get along but I respect him for helping new members and working to include people.
  • Who decides when you get to raise your rank in the Jedi etc?
If you have a master they can submit your name to the faction admins or depending on how it is they can put you forward in a promotion thread. If you are not in a fashion an RPJ like [member="Cira"] can review you and decide.

Always make sure to do what feels right to you. Check out a few Jedi or their darker counterparts and read up on their biographies and see what makes them so unique.

Definitely, you choose them. Most of my Force users have a few specialties. Some are talented in arts such as Mechu Deru while one of mine is a jack of all trades and knows lots of abilities yet is a master of none. You don't have to learn every single ability or saber form, and it's not exactly recommended because those are perishable skills. I suggest picking up basic and fundamental powers for now and choosing a single power that's more advanced for your character to show an uncanny proficiency in. Then you can branch out and roleplay and test the waters.

The Jedi Academy Network is the first one that comes to mind. Most factions have their own Force orders and are always extremely welcoming to newer FUs, but the Jedi Academy Network is one of a kind in being an independent faction solely based around learning about the Force. Sadly, there's no darkside academy network like that.

It's all answered here. :)

Let me know, or any other veteran member know, if you have any more questions!

Find a cool species first, something not human. This will greatly help with a unique bio. I recommend something like Nagai, Vahl, Epicanthix, Selphi (anything you dont see often on here).

As far as this goes.....depending on your character, I dont think anyone would report you for throwing small objects here and there with Telekinesis. But It would be wise to do threads for small Self Training efforts. Just to be on the safe side.

The Galactic Alliance - Lightsiders

The Sith Triumvirate - Darksiders

Brotherhood of the Crimson Lotus - Neutral

Silver Sanctum Coalition - Neutral

I've threaded with a lot of these people, and they will make you feel welcomes, and teach you the ropes.

This is a tough one as it varies faction from faction.

You could after a number of threads, if you feel like you have earned it you could ask for it. (though its not the coolest thing to do)

A Knight or Master will decide it after again you show you effort in your character.

The faction admins can do it too.

Two related suggestions:

Look up Sanderson's Second Law.

Choose weaknesses that aren't nonsense ('super stubborn,' 'gets angry'). One of my longest-running characters has a really bad limp. Another has no Force powers except one.

"Show, don't tell."

In my opinion, the best biographies are written from the perspective someone merely observing the character's actions. From this perspective, the observer definitely knows what the character has done and said, but can merely guess at what the character is actually thinking. This creates an air of mystery behind the character. People eat this up.

Ultimately you choose the skills for the character that you feel are appropriate.

Training is an avenue for role-playing with other people and building a "lineage" of Masters and Apprentices. It's nice if you can find another character that could be an interesting Master for your character.

I don't recommend doing training threads purely for the sake of training - especially if you don't find them fun. That's just self-abuse.

This really depends on what your character is going to be (Sith, Jedi, or other). Many Major Factions do group-training for Apprentices/Padawans. Yet, it's all in different flavors.

Others have answered this, so I'll just say that the fastest way to be promoted is to be super active and helpful for a Major Faction.

Tips:
  • Fun. Do what makes you happy.
  • Power. The more ridiculous your superpowers, or uber your gear, the less people will want to interact with you.
  • Discuss. Movies references are better than Video Game references. In any context.
  • Tech. Get used to having the weirdest gizmos thrown, shot, launched, zipped, zapped, and sling-shot'ed at you.
  • Masters. Take the initiative early. At the end of the day, you're always the boss of your own character.
  • Battle. Nobody expects you to die. Everybody expects you to bleed.
  • Armor. Whatever floats your boat.
  • Weapons. Whatever tickles your pickle.
  • Jedi/Sith Orders. Hand-holding is rare. Come in like a wrecking ball.

To specify, this is regarding Star Wars. The movies should set the scale for what you do, rather than the video games.

If you're inspired to make a character based on/influenced by a video game character? Go for it. It's only their respective power levels that should be more cinematic, less level 60 two-minute cooldown-ish.
