Private Footprints in the sand

Seren Gwyn Seren Gwyn

Jesse gave her a nod for the moment. "Would that be so bad?" The fortifications were important and if they were able to do a lot more then she had some plans for it. "Mugen will be able to do something and if we are going to be getting these coming to us... we might have to be prepared for a lot more. So better and improved designs... if anything the shells can be stronger fortifications if we can reinforce them with a resin to hold together if attacked or smashed." SHe had a look though while Mari and Ginger was there... then the others were back in and they had secured more of the crab shells. Mugen was getting the meat out and into a container that they had so it would be able to be stored for now. "We will have this and in the morning we can make crabcakes."

Seren considered Jesse's question for a moment as she looked over the increasingly absurd collection of fortifications they had accumulated over the course of a single evening: walls, fires, hooks, shark-tooth weapons, and now a giant crab serving as part of the entrance. A faint smile appeared. "No," she admitted, "I suppose it would not be so bad."

Her gaze drifted across the camp while everyone settled back into familiar routines: Mari tending her creatures, Ginger organizing the remains, and Mugen already processing supplies while simultaneously redesigning their defenses in his head. It was becoming a distinct pattern: the island posed a problem, and the camp converted it directly into infrastructure. "At this point, I am fairly certain we are improving faster than the wildlife can adapt," she added, a quiet note of satisfaction in her voice. They had not simply survived; they had learned, and every lesson made them harder to kill.

Her attention then shifted toward Mugen as he spoke of storing the meat and making plans for the morning. Crab cakes. The words alone sounded significantly better than emergency rations and roasted fish, shifting the tone of the evening entirely. "I will admit, the prospect of crab cakes is making this victory feel considerably more worthwhile," she said thoughtfully.

A brief pause followed as the faint smile returned to her lips, her eyes lingering on the secured stores. "Though I suspect tomorrow's meal may be the first time I have ever looked at a giant monster and thought: I wonder how it tastes. Still, if surviving the night results in improved fortifications and breakfast, I would classify that as a successful day."

Jesse looked aat her as they were all working and she gave a nod of her head to that. "Exactly, good night, good food and good fight. The three G's anyone needs well unless you can get a woman with triple G's then marry her." She gave a nod of her head to that though while she was looking over at parts of it now. The crab meat being portioned and as cleaned as it can be when Mari was bringing them and laying the shells out so they would be in the sun come morning to dry. Ginger was looking at some of it as she portioned meat with Mugen for the moment and Guilia came in with some more. She had finished securing a lot of the fortifications where they would be looking on.

Seren stared at Jesse for several seconds, not out of offense, but because she was genuinely trying to determine whether that philosophy made more or less sense than Etain's earlier revelations about the universe. The answer remained entirely unclear. "I feel as though there are several flaws in that philosophy," she observed thoughtfully, letting her gaze drift toward the others working around the camp before returning to Jesse. "Though admittedly fewer than I initially expected."

A faint smile touched the corner of her mouth as the camp settled into the comfortable, busy rhythm that always followed survival. Mari and Ginger worked steadily through the harvested meat, while Mugen divided portions and mentally redesigned the next generation of fortifications. With Guilia returning from the perimeter and the heavy shells being laid out to dry for the morning sun, it was difficult not to feel a profound measure of satisfaction. Several hours ago, they had been fighting for their lives, and now they were discussing breakfast.

"Regardless of the validity of your theory, I can agree with the first three," Seren continued, glancing toward the growing stores of food. Good food, good company, and a successful fight—there were certainly worse ways to end a day. Her eyes followed the rows of drying armor pieces, watching their defenses physically expand from the night's chaos.

"Tomorrow we have food, materials, stronger defenses, and apparently crab cakes," she noted, the last item clearly holding a more pleasant significance than the rest. "At the moment, that feels like a very acceptable outcome. Though if the crab cakes disappoint after all this effort, I reserve the right to be deeply offended."

Mugen gave a look. "You might be, we only have the salt for seasoning for now and a little spice but we can make due. If we can get some water and enough for a brother we could make some soup instead of just another fire roasted meal." He said it while Jesse was looking over more parts. THey finished scooping the meat out and into the containers. Leaves and some dried skin being used like a covering seal. THen she was carrying a container with Ginger. Mari was moving with Guilia and they carried a third container. Mugen finishing up. "We'll make it work though, who knows what else we might be able to make. Some of the shells if we beak and smooth them might even make good bowls."

Seren walked alongside the others as the containers were carried back toward camp, her gaze lingering dryly on the enormous shells that only hours ago had belonged to something actively trying to kill them. Now that they were becoming cookware, she couldn't help but find a strange satisfaction in the transformation. "I am fairly certain this creature is contributing more to the camp dead than it ever would have alive," she observed. As the containers of meat were sealed and stored, she watched the shells being cleaned and stacked, realizing that this was how settlements truly emerged from difficult places. Not through any grand plans, but through hundreds of small decisions made one day at a time.

"Bowls would be useful," she agreed, a faint smile touching her lips. "And if the shells are as durable as they appear, they will likely last longer than anything we could improvise from wood. Though I admit there is something amusing about eating crab soup from a bowl made out of crab." Turning her attention toward Mugen, she noted that after surviving on limited supplies for so long, their very definitions of luxury had shifted. A little spice was suddenly exciting, soup was an event, and a proper bowl was an improvement worth celebrating. "As for the seasoning, I suspect we are reaching the point where almost anything different will feel luxurious."

Her gaze drifted back to the storage containers as her smile widened slightly, a quiet anticipation settling over her for what the morning would bring. "Personally, I am looking forward to discovering whether all of this effort results in excellent crab cakes or a cautionary tale," she added, the light of the camp reflecting in her eyes. "Either way, tomorrow should be memorable."

The man gave a nod of his head to her while he was working. "It will be something to see and I can think of a few other things that would be nice but we will be able to do a lot more... I'll have to sleep on it and plan come morning." He said it while finsihing and then walking towards the lifepod while going to what became a room for himself mostly to store projects. Jesse was looking as Mari and Ginger when towards their little alcove and shed, Etain and Ru had their ow and Guilia well she was one to sleep in diferent places as Jesse was going towards a little area on the beach that was covered. She had her own bed there and she had a weaved covering of leaves and some of the hides they had been able to get.

Seren watched the camp gradually settle as the last of the work was completed. The frantic energy that had carried them through the battle had finally begun to fade, replaced by the slower rhythm of people preparing for rest. Mugen disappeared toward the lifepod with his head undoubtedly full of plans and improvements, already halfway into tomorrow's problems before today had properly ended. Given everything she had seen from him so far, she suspected he would wake with three new designs, two new concerns, and at least one completely unexpected solution.

One by one, the others drifted toward their chosen sleeping places. Mari and Ginger returned to their shelter, Ru had successfully recovered Etain from her philosophical journey through the universe, and Guilia had vanished toward whichever corner of the camp she had decided belonged to her tonight. The camp looked different now than it had when Seren first arrived. Not finished, certainly not comfortable by most standards, but undeniably alive. Defenses stood where there had once been open ground. Supplies filled storage containers that had once been empty. Even the enormous crab shells drying nearby had already begun their transformation into future tools, walls, and shelters.

Her gaze eventually found Jesse, making her way toward the covered space near the beach. The woven leaves and hides shifted softly in the night breeze while the distant surf rolled steadily against the shoreline beyond. Seren lingered for a moment, looking out over the camp and the people within it. They had survived another day. Tomorrow would bring new problems, new work, and likely new dangers, but tonight there was food stored away, walls standing, and people settling safely into their beds. For now, that was enough. With a quiet breath, she turned toward her own place to rest, looking forward to the promise of crab cakes and a morning where everyone was still alive to argue about them.

Jesse continued to sleep as she felt the first rays of sun, warming everything around them and she didn't wake up just rolling over and using a leaf to cover her head. She only got about an extra half hour maybe and was rising up as Mugen was there with Etain who was cooking. She was mostly sitting there near the fire pit. "Somebody get me a raw egg, hot sauce, salt, pepper and a blaster to shoot myself" She spoke as Mugen looked at her and only offered a hand to her shoulder. "There there." SHe looked up and was about to say something before Jesse came over with the scent of crab cooking in the fires and a cleaned shell. "Smells delicious."

Seren had been awake for a little while already, though she had wisely avoided standing too close to Etain during the earliest stages of her recovery. Experience suggested that a person suffering through the consequences of their own decisions was rarely improved by having an audience.

As the scent of cooking crab drifted across the camp, she found herself genuinely looking forward to breakfast. That alone felt like a victory.

Her amber eyes shifted from the fire to Etain as the woman listed her requirements.

A small pause followed.

"Unfortunately, I believe we possess exactly none of those things."

The observation was delivered with complete sincerity.

"No eggs. No hot sauce. No pepper. No blaster."

Her gaze drifted briefly toward the cooking pit.

"Though if it helps, I am reasonably confident the crab did not survive long enough to acquire any of them either."

A faint smile touched her lips before she settled beside the fire.

"What we do have is breakfast."

She looked toward the cleaned shell Jesse carried and then toward the cooking meat.

"Considering yesterday ended with a giant monster trying to eat us, I would classify waking up to crab cakes as a surprisingly favorable outcome."

The smile widened slightly.

"Give it an hour. If they are good enough, you may forget you wanted the blaster."

Jesse kept herself with a small grin on her face. Etain looked up as she was given food and while scowling she wasn't angry and Ru laughed. "She'll be fine, no worse then a party and this time at least there are no embarrassing stories." Jesse laughed more while she was eating the crab cakes with a nod of her head. Guilia was there getting some food from Mugen with a small look aas she spoke. "We have more, however more were in the jungle we will be able to work on it." She said it and Ginger was there with a nod before she and Mari were sitting. Mari being a little sad but she ate. "I'll bury schnooples properly... and then work on training them some more."

Seren sat with the others around the morning fire, the warmth of the flames mixing pleasantly with the scent of freshly cooked crab cakes. After everything that had happened the previous day, the simple act of sharing breakfast felt strangely rewarding. There were no alarms, no monsters attempting to break through walls, and no immediate crises demanding attention. Just food, company, and the satisfaction of surviving long enough to enjoy both.

A faint smile touched her lips as Ru spoke, her gaze shifting briefly toward Etain. "Give it time," she said dryly. "The absence of embarrassing stories this morning does not guarantee their continued absence by this afternoon." There was enough amusement in her voice to make it clear she was teasing, though considering Etain's performance the previous evening, it was not entirely impossible either.

Her attention drifted toward Guilia as she mentioned the creatures still remaining within the jungle. Seren nodded thoughtfully while taking another bite of breakfast. "At least now we know they can be fought." The statement carried a quiet confidence that had not existed the day before. "Knowledge is useful. The next encounter will not be the same as the first." Between the fortifications, the traps, and Mugen's inevitable collection of new plans, she suspected the camp would be considerably better prepared if the creatures returned.

When Mari spoke, Seren's expression softened. She glanced toward the younger woman and offered a small nod of understanding. "I think Schnooples would approve of that." Her gaze briefly shifted toward the beach beyond the camp before returning to the group. "A proper burial, a good breakfast, and lessons learned. Considering how yesterday began, I would call that a respectable outcome."

Jesse had a look as Mari looked up. "He would be, he would have wanted the crab things he downed and helped killed... served with butter and a garlic sauce." SHe looked at Mugen. "I mean we have something close to a seasoning but a butter sauce not yet we do not have any milk... animal milk... please don't make awkward jokes." He said it and Jesse looked at him as Guilia was laughing. "You are smart but when you are embarrassed you are more adorable. Were I not sure I would break you.. I would take you in a beastly fashion." There was a look and Ginger laughed with Mari as she was holding her close and Etain could only crack up. "She's going to bust his hips... I get it."

Seren listened to the exchange in silence for a moment, her breakfast forgotten as the conversation steadily descended into exactly the sort of territory she should have expected from this group. Her gaze moved from Mari to Mugen to Guilia, then finally settled on Etain, who appeared to be enjoying herself far more than anyone suffering through a hangover had any right to.

A faint smile touched her lips.

"I appreciate that Mugen felt the need to establish boundaries before anyone else could."

The observation was delivered with complete seriousness, which somehow made it worse.

Her attention shifted toward Guilia next, one eyebrow lifting slightly.

"For what it is worth, I suspect breaking him would create additional logistical problems for the settlement."

A brief pause followed before she took another bite of her crab cake.

"Though I will admit I had not previously considered structural integrity as a deciding factor in courtship."

The amusement in her eyes betrayed her composure then.

"This island continues to be educational in unexpected ways."

The large cathar looked at her. "It is one of the most important factors. At least with cathar warriors." She said it and Jesse was snickering... strange morning discussion but Etain seemed to be loving it... just loving it while she was there sitting with her food. "This was so worth it." She said it as Ru was looking at her and then he looked at Mugen. "My advice take it as a compliment." He said it and Mugen was suddenly very interested in the food and making it for everyone with Jesse only giving a small nod of her head as she looked at Seren. "See it is all a learning experience for us. We have figured out some more things everyday."

Seren listened to the exchange over her breakfast, her attention moving between Guilia, Mugen, and the increasingly entertained audience surrounding them. What had begun as a discussion about crab cakes had somehow evolved into a conversation about courtship, structural integrity, and the dangers posed by enthusiastic Cathar warriors. She was no longer entirely certain how they had arrived there.

A faint smile touched her lips.

"I am learning an extraordinary amount this morning."

The observation was delivered with complete seriousness.

"Primarily that there are apparently cultural considerations I have never encountered before, and that Mugen's survival may depend upon understanding them."

Her gaze shifted briefly toward the man in question, who appeared determined to focus exclusively on cooking rather than the conversation happening around him.

"Though I suppose Jesse is right."

She took another bite of her crab cake before continuing.

"Every day has been a learning experience. Yesterday, we learned how to stop giant crabs from eating us. Today, we are learning how to avoid accidentally proposing to Cathar warriors."

The faint amusement in her eyes deepened.

"I would call that progress."

Jesse looked at Seren who seemed to be getting better at talking with all fo them which was good. "Progress is good, next we'll get you to go spear fishing, get us some more scales or shark teeth for weapons in case those crabs come back. We now have some shells for tough armor that we will be able to use." She gave a laugh with it while Guilia was looking over some of it when she was eating. Guilia was laughing with a bigger rumble but she had the spears. "THey did work better, we'll need to improve our weapons in case of attack and plan for more dangerous thing. I can start working on weapons to stab them and we can make some traps they will fall into."

Seren listened while Jesse and Guilia discussed future improvements with the same enthusiasm most people reserved for holidays or personal achievements. Apparently, surviving an attack from enormous crabs had not convinced them to avoid future encounters. Instead, it had simply encouraged them to become better prepared for the next one.

A faint smile touched her lips.

"I appreciate that your response to being attacked by giant armored predators is to immediately begin planning how to fight even larger ones."

There was enough dry amusement in her voice to make it clear she was not entirely surprised.

Her gaze shifted toward the collection of shells they had salvaged from the previous day.

"Though I cannot deny the logic."

She considered the pile thoughtfully for a moment. "The shells are strong. The spears worked. The fire worked. We learned what was effective and what was not. If something larger arrives, at least we will not be starting from nothing."

Looking back toward Jesse, she raised an eyebrow slightly.

"As for spear fishing, I suspect that may end badly for everyone involved."

The smile deepened.

"Though if I am expected to help defend the settlement, I should probably learn eventually. Preferably before one of you decides the best way to teach me is by throwing me into the ocean and seeing what happens."

"What else would we do?" Jesse looked at her but finished as she looked at Mugen. "This was really good thank you and a nice change of pace." She said it as Guilia was sitting down. "good fish is like catnip, you have no idea." Her laugh was there though as she looked towards him. "Though we'll also work on fire channels that can be used and we are going to be needing a lot more of that alcohol... even if we can't consume it then we are going to be able to use it to cook whatever it is that we are facing." Jesse was looking though as she moved and stretched. "THough I think what we need now is to five down to some of those crashed ships and see about pulling them in even if it is closer over all the way."

Seren listened while Jesse outlined the next series of improvements with the same calm certainty she seemed to apply to everything. Surviving one attack had not been enough to satisfy anyone around the fire. Instead, it had simply produced a growing list of projects and refinements that would leave the settlement stronger than the day before. A faint smile touched her lips. "I suppose that is the advantage of surviving. You earn the opportunity to improve instead of simply recovering."

Her gaze settled briefly on the collection of salvaged shells before drifting toward the distant jungle where the crashed ships still waited. "The alcohol clearly proved its worth, even if none of us should be drinking it." There was a trace of dry amusement in her voice. "If it helps keep something with claws and armor from reaching the walls, I think it has found a far more useful purpose."

When Jesse mentioned the wrecks, Seren nodded thoughtfully. She had been considering them as well. "I agree. The crash sites are resources waiting to be collected. Metal, wiring, tools, power cells... anything we recover now is something we will not have to improvise later."

A small smile returned as she looked around the group. "Besides, leaving functioning equipment scattered throughout the jungle seems like an unnecessary risk. I would much rather we find it before whatever else is living out there decides to."
