Private Footprints in the sand

Seren Gwyn Seren Gwyn

Jesse was laughing a little as she moved forward only to jump the barricade they had to slide down the ropes. Letting the others keep pulling but she was joining Guilia down there so she could focus the force energies around them and let go only enough to grab another spear that was on the ground and fire it off to work on pinning it to the beach. She moved back only so her fingers could extend and release another rounds of the yellow and green lightning to shock and stun the creature directly. No conduction from the wire and rope... just having it go pure for the moment before Guilia was slashign and mari's hound had charged forward biting into one of the slashed underbelly areas to fig in and pull at parts.

The creature shrieked as Jesse's lightning hammered directly into its exposed underside, the smell of scorched shell and burning flesh rolling across the beach while Guilia continued opening wounds and Mari's hound dug into one of them with relentless determination.

Seren's shadows surged forward again, spreading beneath the crab before climbing up its wounded side. This time, they did more than restrain. Darkness forced itself into damaged joints and exposed gaps in the shell, turning every movement into a struggle as the beast fought against its own weight and injuries.

"It is weakening," she called, her gaze fixed on the increasingly desperate thrashing. "Keep hitting the same wounds. Every time it moves, make it pay for it."

Another surge of lightning coursed through the creature, and its attempt to retreat faltered noticeably. For the first time, Seren thought they might actually kill it.

Even so, her attention stretched beyond the battle. While shadows continued binding the wounded crab, she sent the rest of them searching deeper into the jungle beyond the firelight.

"Do not get careless," she warned. "This one is dying. I am more interested in whether anything else is watching us do it."

If something had been directing the attack, then watching one of its largest hunters dragged from the darkness and torn apart would teach it a lesson.

Whether that lesson encouraged it to leave or return better prepared remained to be seen.

Gulia was the one moving faster and faster, her slashes more feral but she was also using the shocks and tears to eviscerate where she could. Cuting away chunks and getting it to drive deeper before she was opening up parts of it to expose the vitals inside and kicked a spear deeper into it. "Jesse spear." SHe shouted it and Jesse was looking for a moment and then realized it aas she directed the shock to the metal of the spear and it traveled down deeper aand deeper.. the smell of cooked meat there for a moment rolling over her nostrils but Guilia didn't let up. Mari's beast moved back as there was more of its pack dragging crabs that were injured and dying or dead.. to where she was directing them as a small pile they could go through.

The battle had shifted decisively.

Guilia moved with increasing ferocity, each opening she created becoming another avenue of attack as she carved through softer sections of the shell, exposing more of the creature's vulnerable interior. When she drove the spear deeper and called for Jesse, Seren immediately understood.

A moment later, lightning surged down the metal shaft.

The creature convulsed violently.

The smell of scorched flesh and cooked meat rolled across the shoreline as steam rose from the wound, and for the first time since it had emerged from the jungle, the massive crab's movements lost some of their terrible strength. Its limbs still fought, still clawed and thrashed, but there was a growing sluggishness to them now.

Seren maintained her hold on the shadows wrapped around the creature's legs and damaged joints, feeling the resistance weaken beneath the combined assault.

"That seemed considerably unpleasant for it," she observed dryly, watching another spasm run through the beast.

Her gaze shifted briefly toward the growing collection of dead and dying crabs Mari's pack was dragging together. The pile was becoming difficult to ignore.

"Though I admit I am becoming increasingly concerned that we are creating tomorrow's problem while solving tonight's."

A faint hint of amusement touched her voice despite the chaos around them.

"At this rate, processing all of this may prove more challenging than surviving it."

The shadows continued to coil around the wounded creature while Seren's attention stretched periodically beyond the fight, searching the darkness beyond the firelight for any sign that something else might still be watching.

Mugen looked over at it. "Maybe but we can clean those, leave them to dry and based on how strong their shells are we might be able to use it for protection and a form of armor." He said it while they were going and Jesse couldn't hear them as she was moving forward and grabbed the spear pushing the force into her limbs to impale it deeper into the beast... Guilia slashing more but she roared with it. Etain was looking from the wall. "Wooo you go." She turned and looked at Seren. "Tomorrows problems are going to come regardless, think it in the moment... we survived and that means we have a chance to celebrate."

Seren's attention remained fixed on the struggling creature while the shadows continued to coil around its wounded limbs, but Etain's declaration earned a small breath of amusement nonetheless.

The timing, considering she was still visibly intoxicated and cheering from the wall, only made it more difficult to ignore.

"That is a surprisingly reasonable philosophy coming from someone who can barely stand upright," she observed dryly.

Nearby, Jesse drove the spear deeper while Guilia continued tearing into the creature with relentless aggression, each strike opening new wounds as the crab's resistance steadily weakened. Between the lightning, the shadows, and sheer determination, the outcome was beginning to look less uncertain with every passing moment.

Seren glanced briefly toward the growing pile of carcasses being assembled by Mari's beasts before looking back toward Etain.

"You are not wrong, however."

A faint smile touched her lips.

"Tomorrow will arrive whether we worry about it or not. We can decide what to do with the shells, the meat, and whatever new complications they create after we finish making certain this thing does not decide to get a second wind."

The shadows tightened once more around the creature's damaged legs as it struggled.

"Though if we survive and your celebration involves more of that alcohol, I reserve the right to reconsider my enthusiasm."

Mugen look at her. "We used it all, those fires were not cheap but they were beneficial for narrowing the approach. I'll think of some plans for what to do to make it even better next time and we'll be able to work with it. Something this large the walls were made to keep out but we might need to look into a little extra fortifications now." He said it and was moving as Etain looked at Seren from her sitting position. "I am not on the ground because I can't stand up... making that clear. I am just saying that when one drinks the secrets of the universe are revealed and my husband becomes drastically more handsome and rugged now that he is manning a large weapons."

Seren glanced toward Mugen and gave a small nod.

"The fortifications worked," she replied, watching the wounded creature continue to struggle against the combined assault. "Which means tomorrow we can improve them rather than rebuild them. That alone feels like progress."

Considering where they had started, stranded with limited resources and more questions than answers, that was no small achievement.

Then her attention shifted toward Etain. The declaration regarding alcohol, universal secrets, and dramatically increasing levels of husband-related attractiveness earned a long look. A very long look.

"I see," she said with perfect seriousness. "So the alcohol reveals hidden truths about the universe, but somehow every revelation keeps circling back to your husband becoming more attractive."

Her gaze drifted briefly toward Ru before returning to Etain. "An interesting scientific pattern." A faint smile finally threatened the corner of her mouth. "Though I admit I am relieved to hear you are sitting by choice and not because gravity has suddenly become a personal enemy."

The shadows continued restraining the wounded crab while Seren watched another violent twitch run through its damaged limbs.

"For what it is worth," she added dryly, "if the secrets of the universe truly are hidden in that drink, I suspect I prefer remaining ignorant."

Ru didn't play it up, he heard it and chuckled to himself but he was focused like Mugen on the hooks while they were still reeling the beast, Ginger and Mari aiding before he could hear Etain. "Yes... gravity might be a heartless shutta but she knows we cool we cool." THe woman didn't try and get up though. "But everything circles back to what we have here and that is now more imparitive to get more stuff and since in the morning my clarity and acute insight will likely have been forgotten for the drunken haze of needing the hair of the dog... it will fall to you to remind me of how wise and sagelike master of wisdom I was tonight."

Seren watched Etain deliver the declaration with complete confidence despite remaining firmly seated in the sand, and for a moment she found herself wondering whether the alcohol was responsible for the wisdom or merely the certainty.

They were not necessarily the same thing.

"I will do my best," she replied solemnly. "Though I should warn you that by morning the official record may simply read: 'Etain declared gravity an ally, her husband increasingly handsome, and resource acquisition extremely important.'"

A faint smile touched her lips.

"To be fair, that appears to cover most of the major points."

Nearby, Ru and Mugen continued working the hooks while Ginger and Mari helped haul the creature closer to shore. The massive crab still fought, but every pull brought it farther from safety and deeper into a position where the group could finish what they had started.

Seren's shadows remained wrapped around damaged limbs and joints, adding resistance whenever the creature attempted to regain leverage.

"You are not wrong about the supplies, however," she admitted, glancing toward the growing piles of carcasses scattered across the beach. "Assuming we survive the night, we are rapidly accumulating building materials, food, and reasons to improve the defenses."

Her gaze returned to Etain.

"So if your wisdom disappears by sunrise, I suppose I can remind you that your primary strategic recommendation was to keep surviving long enough to create new problems."

A brief pause followed.

"Which, surprisingly, may be one of the better plans proposed tonight."

"WOOOOOO See I got the smarticles like Mugen." Etain said it and Ru was there.. he was there... he was shaking his head while Mugen snickered himself for it. Jesse could hear the shout over the fire and sounds but she was moving as this close she was able to move around and had one fo the spears. Going to gaps and joints for a moment where she would be able to plunge it into and through... allowing Guilia to continue to tear at it and she was making progress on the belly to get more to spill out when it got closer. Washing into the sea and sand. Jesse was using the force to pull more at it with the shadows before she was seeing the piule of crabs and Mari came down from the wall with Ginger... staying close and out fo the way but also finishing off any that might still be alive while they were turning them into their backs.

Etain's triumphant celebration echoed across the beach loudly enough that even Jesse seemed capable of hearing it over the crackling fires and the dying protests of the enormous crab.

Seren suspected the entire island could probably hear it.

"The smarticles," she repeated thoughtfully, as though considering a profound philosophical concept. "I shall endeavor to remember that exact terminology when recording this historic moment."

A faint smile lingered on her face before her attention returned to the battle.

The creature was losing ground steadily now.

Jesse drove spears into exposed joints and gaps in the armor while Guilia continued opening the underside with relentless determination. Every wound made the next strike easier. Every strike weakened the beast further. As it was dragged closer to shore, more of its internal organs spilled into the sand and surf, staining the water, while the smell of salt, smoke, and cooked flesh mingled beneath the night air.

Mari and Ginger had moved from the wall now, staying clear of the main fight while making certain none of the smaller crabs were given an opportunity to recover. One by one, they were turned over, dispatched, and added to the growing collection of carcasses.

Seren's shadows remained woven through the larger creature's damaged limbs, tightening whenever it attempted to pull free or regain leverage.

At this point, it felt less like a battle and more like a very determined argument between one giant crab and an entire community that had collectively decided it was becoming dinner.

"I am beginning to think the crab made a tactical error," she observed dryly.

Her gaze shifted briefly toward the growing piles accumulating across the beach.

"It appears to have attacked people who view every problem as either a building material, a tool, or a meal."

"Just like our ancestors." Etain said it and Ru laughed but he spoke. "Seren you are sweet but if you hold a conversation while she is drunk two things happen... she confuses you and eventually wants to try and have a body pillow... Be safe." He said it and there was nothing more as Etain was getting up and looking at him. "Oh someone is jealous, don't worry sweetie, you are still my big hunka hunka." Etain was speaking as she wrapped arms around Mugen and Ru shook his head. Jesse wasn't going to laugh from down on the beach as she could sense it in the force when they were roaming around and working on it. There was a lot more though when she and Guilia got it to the waters edge and drove spears into eys going for the brain to swizzle it around.

Seren watched the exchange for a moment, her expression hovering somewhere between amusement and genuine curiosity as Etain transferred her affections from philosophical wisdom to aggressively complimenting her husband.

The transition had been remarkably seamless.

Ru's warning, however, earned a slight tilt of her head.

"I appreciate the concern," she replied with complete seriousness. "Though I should note that I have never been a body pillow before."

Her gaze shifted briefly toward Etain.

"At least not to my knowledge."

A faint smile finally appeared.

"I admit I am curious how one arrives at that particular conclusion during a discussion about survival, giant crabs, and fortifications."

Further down the beach, Jesse and Guilia finally drove their spears through the creature's eyes and into whatever passed for a brain beneath the shell. The massive body convulsed one final time before its movements slowed.

Seren's shadows remained wrapped around the creature, more out of caution than necessity now.

"Though perhaps I should stop asking questions."

Her eyes flicked back toward Etain.

"I have a feeling the answer only becomes stranger from here."

"You don't want to know, my hair is short for a reason." He said it while looing at the large crab and eased on it while he motioned for Mugen and switched with the man to carry Etain who was there. He just smiled a little though aand Mugen was looking. "THat was weird... If I make another batch I think I am going to have to really think about the formula... the fires showed it was potent, the lack of anything close to barriers shows its purity was maybe a little too strong. Can't have etain thinking anyone else is her husband around the camp." He said it but was looking and already tapping on the metal so that he would be able to move it and adjust the lighting to see around them. "I'll have to factor in several more plans."

Seren watched Ru collect Etain with the practiced ease of a man who had clearly performed this particular rescue operation before. The sight drew a small smile from her as she noted, "I am beginning to suspect this is not the first time she has discovered the secrets of the universe." Her gaze followed them briefly before returning to Mugen, whose mind had already moved on to dissecting the flaws and improvements of his latest experiment. Even after everything they had just survived, his immediate focus on the next version and the next solution was oddly reassuring.

"The formula may require adjustment," she agreed, glancing toward Etain's retreating form with a faint trace of amusement. "Though I admit there are worse outcomes than becoming increasingly convinced your spouse is attractive. The greater concern appears to be that the effect scales with each drink." Her eyes then drifted toward the enormous crab lying motionless near the shoreline, surrounded by growing piles of salvaged materials. Tonight alone had produced enough lessons regarding the alcohol, the fortifications, the hooks, and the creatures themselves to occupy them for days.

"For what it is worth, the fires worked exactly as intended," she added, folding her arms lightly as she looked back at Mugen. "The creature reached the camp, but not on its terms; we controlled where it approached, where it fought, and ultimately where it died. If survival depends on learning faster than whatever this island throws at us, I would say tonight was productive. Though next time, perhaps we can arrange for the lesson to be slightly smaller."

Mugen gave a nod of his head as he spoke. "I imagine she does but she falls asleep before she can reveal them." He said it with a grin though while taking what she said for it. "I'll be able to get more for it.. we can make it work and we can benefit from expansions to the walls with the beach being able to be a sort of funnel so if anything is coming at us we are able to filter them and control them. WIth some better fire lines we can craft. If we can press and make some fat to melt and oils from the crabs we have now we might be able to combine it with the sap and improve many more aspects... So many ideas and I will have tow ork through the morning for it."

Seren listened with a faint smile as Mugen's thoughts raced days ahead, dismantling the recent attack piece by piece to rebuild it into plans and architectural opportunities. It was oddly reassuring to watch him work; where some people responded to danger by worrying about the next threat, Mugen responded by redesigning the entire battlefield. Her amber eyes drifted across the beach toward the enormous carcass lying near the waterline, which was already being mentally converted into building materials before it had even fully stopped twitching.

"I am beginning to think the island made a mistake attacking an engineer," she observed, her voice carrying a dry amusement she seemed incapable of entirely suppressing. "Most predators hope to survive an encounter, but this one appears destined to become fortifications, fuel, tools, fertilizer, and possibly tomorrow's dinner. The funneling approach makes sense, though. If they are forced into predictable avenues of attack, then every improvement compounds the effectiveness of the last one."

Looking back toward him, she folded her arms lightly and glanced toward the walls and the carefully layered defenses that had already proven their worth tonight. "Though I would recommend at least a few hours of sleep before redesigning the entire island. Otherwise, tomorrow's plans may become as insightful as Etain's recent revelations about the universe, and while I am sure those secrets are profound, I suspect they are exceptionally difficult to implement architecturally."

He gave her a nod of his head while Jesse and the others were returning. "That might be best but we will secure some of it. the meat can go into the storage rooms that have been sealed so the temperature won't drop as much. Cooled and better able to be kept until the morning with a plan." Mugen said it while he was walking and Jesse came around. Using the force to heft a lot of it... using the moment to get shells there while Mugen was digging into them and Mari was feeding some of her beasts. She got them back to her pen while holding one that had been pinced at the throat and Ginger helped her bury him in the sand. Jesse looking at Seren while she motioned with one hand for her to help her lift with the force the large crab up and to the entryway like another gate they could use for protection.

Seren gave a small nod as Mugen outlined the plan. Preserving the meat tonight and deciding how to process the rest of the salvage under tomorrow's sun seemed sensible enough. They had survived the night's onslaught, and there was no need to rush every tactical decision before dawn.

Yet, as her attention drifted toward Mari, ushering her creatures back into their enclosure, the sight of one that hadn't made it back unharmed tempered the satisfaction of their victory. Survival always carried a cost, even when it felt small enough to overlook in the immediate aftermath of a fight.

The momentary solemnity fractured when Jesse motioned for her assistance. A faint, wry smile touched Seren's lips as she stepped forward without hesitation.

"Using a giant crab as a gate was not on my list of predictions for today," she observed, gathering the Force around her in quiet, crushing currents.

Shadows and telekinetic pressure wrapped around the massive shell as Jesse added her own strength to the effort. Together, they hauled the immense carcass across the beach, carving deep, heavy furrows into the dark sand until it settled heavily at the camp's threshold.

Guiding the makeshift barrier into position, Seren let out a dry, quiet exhale. "Though I suppose if something large enough to move this decides to attack us, the gate itself will no longer be our primary concern."

Looking at the silhouette of the shell in the firelight, she could finally see the landscape through an engineer's eyes. The island kept trying to kill them, but its fatal flaw was that it left behind raw materials with every failed attempt.

Glancing across the shore littered with shattered armor and salvaged remains, she looked back toward Jesse with an amused tilt of her chin. "At this rate, our fortifications may eventually become more dangerous than the wildlife. Though I suspect that was already your goal."
