Seren gave a small nod as Mugen outlined the plan. Preserving the meat tonight and deciding how to process the rest of the salvage under tomorrow's sun seemed sensible enough. They had survived the night's onslaught, and there was no need to rush every tactical decision before dawn.
Yet, as her attention drifted toward Mari, ushering her creatures back into their enclosure, the sight of one that hadn't made it back unharmed tempered the satisfaction of their victory. Survival always carried a cost, even when it felt small enough to overlook in the immediate aftermath of a fight.
The momentary solemnity fractured when Jesse motioned for her assistance. A faint, wry smile touched Seren's lips as she stepped forward without hesitation.
"Using a giant crab as a gate was not on my list of predictions for today," she observed, gathering the Force around her in quiet, crushing currents.
Shadows and telekinetic pressure wrapped around the massive shell as Jesse added her own strength to the effort. Together, they hauled the immense carcass across the beach, carving deep, heavy furrows into the dark sand until it settled heavily at the camp's threshold.
Guiding the makeshift barrier into position, Seren let out a dry, quiet exhale.
"Though I suppose if something large enough to move this decides to attack us, the gate itself will no longer be our primary concern."
Looking at the silhouette of the shell in the firelight, she could finally see the landscape through an engineer's eyes. The island kept trying to kill them, but its fatal flaw was that it left behind raw materials with every failed attempt.
Glancing across the shore littered with shattered armor and salvaged remains, she looked back toward Jesse with an amused tilt of her chin.
"At this rate, our fortifications may eventually become more dangerous than the wildlife. Though I suspect that was already your goal."
