Private Father's Day Blues

A Journey's End.

Aptly named decades prior to the death of the late Sword of the Jedi, Ryv Karis, it was a nexus of power tucked away in a little corner of Tython all but forgotten by the greater galaxy. Once, it served as an idle hobby to the Jedi. He often returned to the giant, gnarled tree found in the center of the lake. There, Ryv would commune with the creatures of the nexus as he tended to the grove deep beneath its surface.

In his final moments, Ryv stumbled into the garden he kept, half-delirious from pain after he and Darth Solipsis traded blows—and their lives—in the fated confrontation Jedi Master Vyrin Karis foresaw moments after Ryv’s birth.

When Kyric stepped onto the tiny island, Ryv walked before him. The younger Karis couldn’t help but feel his father’s presence all around him. Echoes of the man who gave his life for a few short years of peace appeared wherever Kyric’s scarred fingers touched. The boy watched his father, then only seventeen, lift a watering pail to gently feed a small patch of zeilla flowers. Those same flowers now flourished before Kyric’s very eyes. He counted three dozen by the time he turned in search of another memory.

Kyric spotted a tiny pruner half buried in the dirt and he went to it quickly. He tore the rusted tool from the earth and stood transfixed as Ryv carefully studied tangled up fishing line wound tight around a goliath turtle’s neck. His father was older then. Where once he had two arms, only one remained. Scars not unlike Kyric’s wove around the late kiffar’s arm and up his neck, as if he spent hours beneath a scalpel, sliced, cut, and studied by an aberrant mind.

Ryv didn’t hesitate to free the turtle. He didn’t hold himself above the simple task of watering the flowers, either. Everything the man did radiated warmth. His smile shone brighter than even the closest star while he stood within this peaceful place.

But Kyric remembered his father on Denon, too.

There was an incalculable pain in Ryv’s eyes when he first stumbled into the bar that housed Kyric and his siblings. The Son of the Sword remembered the apathy he saw and felt within his father when he took up Resolve and slaughtered the men who dared abuse children—his children—in the Jedi Master’s presence. And while Kyric should’ve felt scared shitless that day, he didn’t.

The boy felt safe.

A safety Kyric hadn’t known since the day he said goodbye to his father for the last time.

Tears welled up in Kyric’s eyes as a glimpse of his father’s final moments played out before him. Kyric followed him through the corridor-like passage found within the massive roots of the titanic tree. He watched as Ryv stumbled to a bushel of white roses still stained scarlet from the Jedi Master’s blood all these years later. Kyric listened to his father’s final farewell to him and Auteme, as if Ryv knew this moment would come to pass even as he lay dying in the aftermath of his greatest struggle.

The strength left Kyric’s legs, then. He fell to his knees and sobbed violently. His fingers carved deep troughs into the dirt as he struggled vainly to calm himself, but the young Jedi couldn’t contain it anymore. The pain tore his heart to pieces and stole his breath away. All he could do was quietly repeat the same four words over and over again.

I miss you, dad.

“The Warden of Tython”

Still getting used to that…

He was making his rounds, not as some “Night Watchman” or “Mall Security Guard” but because there were few, if any Jedi out there who concerned themselves over this planet like he did. This was not a negative reflection on anyone but the big man was tired of seeing the strife that this planet had repeatedly seen and experienced. The planet deserved some peace. The Temple Guard was coming along, but they were focused where they needed to be, and allowed more for the others to spread out and look around. Caltin was actively looking for others to take to this responsibility he had, so that one day it could and would be passed on to them, but none so far.

… but enough about that.

He sensed a presence not that far away. There was a familiarity to it, but one whom he could not put his finger on… and it bothered him. Hitting the engines on his speeder bike, Caltin honed in on what, or in this case who he was searching for. The presence grew stronger as he approached, yet it remained elusive. Caltin's instincts told him this was no mere coincidence. Something or someone was deliberately masking their energy, leading him into a game of cat and mouse he was determined to win.

Trying to not get too deep into his own feelings, and focus on who he was looking for, the feelings started to surface. The feelings that made him the Guardian he is, the feeling of loss, and not putting another through that.

I’ve felt enough of it in my own life… not letting anyone else feel it.

By the time Kyric felt the approaching presence in the Force he could hear the echo of the speeder bike through the earthen tunnel. He stumbled to his feet and sniffled. Wiping away the tears, the kiffar turned from the bloody roses and made for the exit. The thought of being cornered while caught in his feelings didn't appeal to the young Jedi whatsoever.

Ascending the tunnel, Kyric concentrated on the individual above in an effort to calm himself.

There was something familiar in their presence, like the scent of ozone before a great storm. It washed away the boy's greatest pains and replaced them with a brighter memory.

Kyric and his sister, Kyla, sat on the roof along the edge of their father's bar, listening to the rain pitter-patter off the durasteel shingles of nearby buildings. Lightning flashed overhead. It illuminated distant, gray clouds. Massive ships carved through the sky like a sleek skiff cutting across a calm lake. Kyla's face lit up with a smile as bright and beautiful as their father's whenever it rained. It was their sole source of solace in the years before their father's return to Denon. And with his arrival, Ryv joined them not long after.

They must've spent a hundred nights together on that roof, huddled together for warmth, hair plastered to their heads. Ryv always brought them little tin cups of hot cocoa, freshly-brewed to Kyla's delight.

Kyric blinked in sudden irritation as a beam of bright sunlight shone into his good eye. He wiped away the black spots floating through his vision in time to come face to face with none other than Caltin Vanagor.

"Huh," Kyric began. "I didn't think anyone would find me out here." He stepped out from the tunnel and approached Caltin. "Master Vanagor." The kiffar dipped his head in greeting. "Or Caltin, I guess. Since we're alone here and the like..."

Kyric? It took him a minute to recognize the kid, but this was one of those times where the name came right to him. Anyone reading this has experienced this at some point in their lives. When it finally came to the big man, he dismounted his bike and kept his distance. Not out of any issue but of respect, the kid may need his space. Caltin was not going to approach right away, Kyric was no threat.

He also looked to be feeling a bit disturbed.

I used to come to this tree when I was a Knight. When I was angry at a failure, if I couldn’t protect someone I would come here to center myself and find some level of peace. Finally taking a few steps forward. What brings you here? He asked presumably rhetorically.

"The one and only," Kyric said with a half-smile.

He watched the Jedi Master as he spoke, undeniably intrigued at the thought of others finding their way to the tiny little island, shaded by its canopy in their darker hours. It made sense Kyric eventually found his way to the Heart of Ashla. Hundreds, maybe even thousands took the very same pilgrimage in an effort to find peace long before the kiffar first drew breath.

And in that moment, surrounded by the echoes of great Jedi well before his time, Kyric knew many others would come long after him, too.

"Maybe this'll sound childish to say, Master, but I couldn't imagine you failin'," the wayward Jedi spoke with the reverence of a child who once more stood across from one of his heroes. "I know that's silly, but yer strong. Confident. There were more than a few times in the last couple years where I overcame somethin' that shoulda killed me dead because of yer teachings."

Kyric's chin dipped, his eyes full of unspoken melancholy.

More scars have since joined the younger Jedi's growing collection. The tattered bandages wound around his arms and legs did not completely cover the thin white lines given to him beneath a scalpel. Callouses marred his knuckles, each one a story of a life-or-death brawl fought in the confines of an inescapable prison.

"I'm sorry for disturbin' yer peace, Master. I'll get gone and leave you to yer meditations." Kyric turned to leave, his eyes cast to the dirt beneath their feet.

He did not respond, or even move until the kid tried to leave. A simple hand up to Kyric’s chest should stop him.

Stop. You’re not interrupting anyone. I was on my rounds and noticed your presence so I swung by. I only came here because I could not figure out who you were right away, but that your aura was familiar. So get out of your head, and relax, we worked hard to liberate Tython from the Dark Empire so all Jedi, no matter where in the galaxy you are from are welcome. Just like your dad used to do, so you are interrupting no one. If anything, it’s me that interrupted. Now sit. Though he did not push anything, and his tone was reassuring, Caltin was not asking. He stood quietly for a moment, even turning to let him get settled.

Finally sitting down next to him.

Let us do some unpacking. First and foremost, this thought of me not failing, with all due respect is laughable. Everyone fails from time to time my friend. From the youngest Padawan sneaking a snack over her THAT SHE THINKS I DID NOT NOTICE… He smirked as a Togrutan Padawan, “Amila” looked up from the other side of a tree branch with shock. With a smirk, Caltin just winked. ... tp Revan… to the Exile… to Mace Windu… Yoda… Luke… Maeve… Heavenshield… Starchaser… ME... it happens.

Shifting his weight a little, he cracked his neck. Your dad did too. It happens, it’s going to happen. Accept it and own it. It’s all you can do. What makes us different from those who follow “other paths” is that it does not define us. Yeah, it sucks when it happens. My little sister… don’t know if you have ever heard of the name Ala Quin Ala Quin … it was, and in many ways still is… my life’s mission to protect her. You know how many times I failed her? More than I can count.

I’m only “strong” and “confident” because I look at how I failed, fix the problem if I can, and move forward. Whatever I taught you that kept you from dying? I learned it from someone else. It’s what we do, pass this on.
He then laughed heartily.

I mean, do you know how many times I have died? Four times, technically to this point. Most recently when I, and many around me failed to protect Kashyyyk from the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders. Mandalore the Anointed… his flagship cannons fired on me. I couldn’t go anywhere… I was done. Don’t ask me how I returned… I guess The Force just wasn't finished with me, it never seems to be. It wasn’t then, it wasn’t when I was scalped by that Hutt Gang. He rubbed his scalp. It wasn’t when Anakin and those Clones…

He shook his head, still bothered by the memory. It didn’t when I went in the ice for eight hundred years, it didn’t when I couldn’t control my connection to the Force and and wasn’t this past time. Those were all failures to me, not because I “died” but because I ended up in that point. Failures don’t change you unless you let them keep you from moving forward, from learning.

Rubbing his chin, a little embarrassed about what he was about to say. I failed your father when I first met him. I called him an “idiot”. He wasn’t one, he never was. I was too wrapped up in “my time” and “the old ways” I was not prepared mentally yet to accept that 860whenever it was… was not 20bby or even 10aby… It potentially ruined what could have been a strong friendship. Embarrassed, but truthful, he shrugged.

You’re a lot like him… He chortled. In the “non-idiot” ways.

Kyric stopped at Caltin's behest and looked up at the Big Man.

It was fair to say Kyric was in his head. He spent most of his time there, sorting through an ever-growing web of memories woven between his father, himself, and his dyad's dark past. Training used to ease the white-noise, and where that failed, his cousins or siblings knew the right things to drag him back from the precipice of thought. But two long years in a prison had done more to the kiffar's psyche than he knew.

Strangely, Master Ashina's words came to Kyric's mind then.

Hesitation is defeat.

Kyric took Caltin's offer and walked to the edge of the tiny island which housed the beating heart of Ashla's Embrace. The younger Jedi plopped down beside the water, slowly unraveled the stained wrappings that acted as foot coverings for the last few weeks, and examined them.

Blood and dirt caked the cloth to a point where the fabric stuck together at many points along their length.

I need to get some new boots, Kyric mused quietly to himself. He set to work washing away the muck and listened intently to Caltin.

Most everything the Jedi Master said made sense. Kyric couldn't deny it even if he wanted to, but he found his thoughts drifting back to Coruscant, where Creuat took the kiffar's eye and Bernard was forced to face the Dark Side Elite alone. Images of Capris' terror-stricken face under the neon's of Club Everlight came next; interrupted by the emptiness carved deep into Kyric's heart caused by the absence of BD-8.

Focus, Kyric.

Kyric traced his way through Caltin's wisdom more thoroughly and applied it to those very same memories of Coruscant.

Creuat defeated him with powerful energy manipulation two years ago. In turn, Kyric sought out the Big Man for training. With the proper tools in hand, the kiffar survived not only those two long years in sub-zero temperature, but a harrowing rematch with the nautolan Dark Jedi. And with that knowledge, the kiffar forged a foundation with which to expand his mastery and his repertoire.

Caltin's comparison between Kyric and his father genuinely surprised the younger Jedi.

"If I was half the man my father was I wouldn't be so damn scared all the time," Kyric admitted. "The freakin' shakes set in the moment I'm faced with danger. All I can think about are the faces of innocent folks I could've saved." He clenched his hands into fists around the sopping bandages. "Darth Solipsis and his ilk are huntin' me down. My older brother is missin'. And worst of all, Master, I can't do a damn thing to save the girl I love from the darkness eatin' away at her. It's like watchin' my ma waste away all over again."

Tears welled up in Kyric's eyes again. He trembled weakly, like the admission froze his blood within his veins.

"How can I call myself a Jedi? I'm pathetic."

Caltin would wonder if the kid was listening to anything that he was saying, but he was going through a period. He needed the time to work through his issues, and sometimes it meant showing empathy, even if you both know you are right.

You think that you’re not who you are meant to be, or even want to be because of “fear”? My friend, being Knighted doesn’t absolve you from fear, frell… being a Master doesn’t absolve you from fear. It’s going to happen. “Fear” and “Bravery” are not polar opposites of each other. They go hand in hand. Do you think Romi Jade Romi Jade ever lived without fear? Thurion Heavenshield Thurion Heavenshield ? Coren Starchaser Coren Starchaser ? Ala Quin Ala Quin ? Valery Noble Valery Noble ? Do you think your own father lived without fear when all of us were stopping the Maw from trying to destroy the very planet you and I are conversing on?He shook his head “no”, not to try to be anything, but to re-emphasize his point.

Reaching out through the Force and pulling two bottles of “Elba Water” out of one of the saddlebags, then offering him one, the big man twisted the cap off his and took a drink.

Yeah, some brave names, and I guarantee you that each of them have felt fear at one point or another and pushed it aside. That’s what “bravery” is… not the absence of fear, but doing what you need to do without it. He took another drink. I live in fear every single day of my life.

Shifting his weight a little, he cracked his neck and let those words hang for a second. Fear of what could happen if a hidden band of Flesh Raiders slaughter some younglings because I did not make my rounds one day. Fear if someone I taught dies because I did not train them well enough. Fear can be healthy if you don’t let it control you. He then laughed heartily.

Darth Solipsis hunts all of us. Yeah, your father struck him down when he tried to destroy this planet, so there is a “revenge” factor there.. he may know your name, but he will happily take anyone who’s light shines. I’m sorry about your brother, but if he is half the guy you are, he is out there. You have to believe that, and if you don’t then I will for you. There may be a reason the two of you are separated, and it may be his choice… perhaps he feels he is protecting you, like big brothers do. I am not assuming anything, as I hope you are not. He rubbed his scalp one more time. Until you know... you don’t know...

Did Caltin have the anxiety that Kyric was clearly manifesting? Of course he did. He meant it when he said that there is not a Jedi who does not have their fears. Caltin had his own fears, but he had learned to manage them. He knew that fear could be a powerful ally if used correctly, and he had trained himself to harness that power. He believed that fear was not something to be avoided, but something to be embraced and understood.

As for the woman you love, I get it, but she is on a journey just as you are right now. All you can do is be there for her. We’re not perfect, we can’t do everything… He could not really help much with this, he was happily ma… wait… Before I went into the ice… there was a Sorrusian woman… she was “Dark”... that is all I will say… but there was something between us. Something soft… but unspoken… we had a strong connection. The thing is, she would not give up on her beliefs and teachings, and neither would I. That was the only thing that separated us and though neither liked it, neither were willing to change. I felt like I was failing her, as I had already shut down more than one of her operations. Shifting his weight and watching a bird fly by, he collected his thoughts.

It was when I received a distress call from her… she was on Rhen Var… they were coming for her… hard... well… against all of my better judgment and ideals I dropped everything and made my way there. It was a trap. I didn’t even make it “boots to ground”... I was swarmed by two dozen Supa Fighter models. I don’t know how I took down eighteen of them, but I did. I was going down though, there were just too many and I was shot down, ended up crashing into a ravine of permafrost… my astromech… my best friend sacrificed his own power source to save my life.

I woke up eight hundred years later… alone… having lost everything I knew and anyone I cared about… my friends… my colleagues… my daughter… my love. I failed yet again… until the day on Corellia… in all of the restaurants… on all of the planets in the galaxy… I ran into the very woman I thought I lost. She did too… they forced her into stasis.
]he flashed his wedding ring, taking off his glove for a moment. We’re married to this day our son is out there too… making the fearless afraid… and not in the healthy way.

He shifted his weight again.
Look, my point is, like I said… “until you know for sure… you don’t know”... Maybe it’s because “The Force works in mysterious ways…” or like an old bald headed friend of mine used to say “The Force has a sense of humor”... Things will happen that are supposed to. Otherwise, I would have stayed “dead” the first time. He laughed. You’re not the “failure” you seem to be convinced that you are. You look like… well Taking a final swig of water, finishing the bottle. You’re very much the “Jedi” you see me as… that you see your father as… you may have some things you need to work through… to which I know someone who can help you… but yeah… if I thought you were a failure… I would have never taught you a thing.

The kiffar graciously received the bottle from Caltin and unscrewed the cap.

Wisdom earned over a lifetime which transcended time and space—life and death, even—poured from Caltin's lips like it was just another day of the week. Maybe for the Jedi Master this was the norm. There were enough Jedi on Tython in need of guidance from someone with the Big Man's pedigree, after all, and Kyric counted himself lucky to number among them.

What he did not expect to hear from the Jedi Master was an admission of love for one wreathed in the Dark Side. Ancient history it may be, Kyric couldn't picture Caltin in the same position the kiffar stood now, but the Warden of Tython's tone brokered no room for disagreement. Kyric felt the older Jedi's honesty as easily as he felt the cool drink of water passing through his lips and down his throat.

Kyric knew within his heart Capris had brought nothing but trouble into his life since Pantora. She used him for a paycheck and left him for dead in the snow. Fast forward a few months, she landed him in a prison under the watchful eye of Solipsis and his ilk for his bounty—Kyric had the scars to prove it.

The sight of the ring on Caltin's hand still breathed hope into Kyric even after all that. He couldn't be sure why he so desperately clung to the thought of holding Capris in his arms; of turning her away from the infectious disease that was the Dark Side. But he did. When the kiffar's felt the oppressive weight of his memory bore down upon him—made all the worse by the echoes of lifetimes not his own—it was Capris' scowling face that eased his mind. She carried a promise of peace the Jedi clung to; like an old song reminiscent of brighter days, she shone with an incomparable radiance that scoured away all else.

"I-" Kyric stopped himself. He bit back the self-loathing he so readily employed and took another deep drink of his water. "Thank you, Master Vanagor. Your confidence in me means the world. It really does."

There was so much there to unpack Kyric didn't know where to start, so he opted for something easy—a question.

"Who would you suggest I talk to?" the kiffar gently twirled the bottle until a tiny whirlpool formed within. "I'm not foolish enough to think I've got all this figured out. And if yer thinkin' it'll help me further along my path, I ain't fer doubtin' you."

Caltin sat for a moment, taking in his reaction, and deciding on how best to respond, until there was something that Kyric said that made him laugh heartily.

Show me someone who “has this all figured out” and I will show you someone about to become one with the Force. He shook his head. Life always has a way of getting in the way of your plans. So does the Force. If it didn’t… my wife wouldn’t have sacrificed her connection for me.

He did not go into detail about that statement, in truth he still didn’t understand how his wife gave him her connection to the Force, so he would survive. Perhaps it was her, perhaps it was symbolic, it didn’t matter at this point.

You’re aware of what you have going on, you’re taking it a little harder than you should, but you are aware and that says a lot about you. I know some twice your age and experience who aren’t half as far along. He held out his hand, and that bird that flew by before flapped up and landed on his arm, Caltin then pulled out a ration bar and began breaking it into pieces, feeding it to the little one. Okay, this is cool… never done this before.

Looking at the little bird enjoy its new meal with a smile.

As for her can help you, it’s my little sister Ala Quin Ala Quin . She lives in on Naboo as a part of the Order of Shiraya or whatever the Naboo… High Republic call it… I think they just call themselves “The Jedi Order” but I don’t want to assume.
She’ll probably not be happy about this, but she owes me a few favors…

I mean, you would be welcome to stay here all you like, and I would be glad to put in a good word, but I don’t think being here, or Coruscant, or Alderaan, or wherever would be good for you to heal. He rubbed his scalp, which somehow seemed to be the bird’s cue to perch on it. Ah frak, not what I meant to do... he snorted.

She has a way of helping with that type of healing. I think they would be a better fit for your personality. Trying to remain still, he scratched his nose. Your call though. I’m always around.
