Representing First United Astral Engineering’s first foray into vehicle-grade kinetic weaponry, the FAE/SW-16 Linear Motor Autocannon is a verpine shatter autocannon comparable in size and class to a standard laser cannon. Designed to be mounted on small craft, vehicles, and larger platforms (generally as support weapons), the FAE/SW-16 yet retains outsized firepower for its class. Firing projectiles that carry potentially devastating amounts of kinetic energy (in excess of a couple million joules), the effects of the weapon are equal parts violent and breathtaking. Immediate damage effects depend on the target profile but are generally as follows: The projectile is capable of penetrating ~0.3 meters of durasteel and ~0.2-0.3 meter of standard starship hull plating. Man-sized targets within a 0.3m radius of impact may be vaporized, while the shockwave generated within ~1-2 meters of the impact area carries enough energy to liquify organs and rattle components. Secondary effects include a plasma flash on impact, as the energy of this event generates an ionized gas discharge. The sudden energy release can also generate a ~1-2m fireball around the impact point.
Of particular note, the danger of stray kinetic projectiles in space was accounted for in the design. Each projectile contains a tiny baradium micro-charge and programmable matter that facilitates the process of disintegrating the round should it travel more than 700,000 km without striking anything. This is also included in the sabots used in APFSDS rounds and in all components of the smart shrapnel rounds.
All in all, the FAE/SW-16 Linear Motor Autocannon pulls the verpine autocannon into First United Astral Engineering design standards. Manifesting devastating effects against infantry, vehicles, and starfighters, the FAE/SW-16 is hoped to become a fixture in FAE-sponsored designs.

- Ammunition Types
- Standard Penetrator
- Standard penetrator ammunition is designed for general use, being effective against both armored and unarmored targets. The core is dense tunqstoid, which is encased in a conductive polymer-ultrachrome composite to prevent wear inside the barrel and to facilitate the penetration of energy shields. The projectile has a rough teardrop shape, for aerodynamic efficiency.
- CryoBan
- Designed to release CryoBan on impact, CryoBan ammunition is designed to flash-freeze targets on impact. Regarding its construction, CryoBan slugs are encased in a conductive polymer-ultrachrome composite to prevent wear inside the barrel and to facilitate the penetration of energy shields. This casing is notably frangible, intended to shatter on impact in order to release the payload. The slug’s core is composed of three parts: the primary cryogenic agent—CryoBan, a suspended pocket of collapsium gas, and a high-strength magnetic containment shell. On impact, the shell fractures, at which point the collapsium destabilizes and implodes to create a localized vacuum. The sudden pressure drop causes the CryoBan to expand violently, potentially freezing targets in a ~4-5 meter radius instantly and violently.
- Armor-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot
- Optimized for enhanced armor-piercing capability, APFSDS projectiles are intended for engaging targets protected by heavy armor. The projectile uses an ultra-dense seigurium penetrator electroplated with ultrachrome, designed to ensure penetration against energy shields and armor made of beskar (and other materials of similar advanced grade). The projectile itself is flechette-like and rod-shaped with a high sectional density. It also includes a sabot that falls away after firing to provide obturation inside the barrel.
- Ion Disruption
- Ion disruption slugs are specialized electromagnetic ammunition designed for anti-droid, anti-electronic, and anti-energy shield applications. They deliver targeted ion bursts intended to fry circuits, overload systems, and cripple mechanized threats. In terms of their construction, ion disruption slugs are encased in a conductive polymer-ultrachrome composite to prevent wear inside the barrel and to facilitate the penetration of energy shields. This casing is notably frangible, intended to shatter on impact in order to release the ionized payload. The slug’s core is composed of two parts: ionized gas that unleashes a charged plasma, conductive nano-filaments which are designed to facilitate the penetration of the ionic discharge into circuitry, and ferromagnetic dust that enhances EM interference. On impact, the slug shatters, releasing ionized plasma and charged nano-filaments which function akin to a powerful electromagnetic pulse in a ~4-5 meter effective radius. The ferromagnetic dust is released as well, but it functions primarily to ensure that ionic effects linger, potentially causing extended systems disruption that may last after impact.
- Explosive-Incendiary
- Explosive-incendiary ammunition is designed primarily for anti-armor and area denial use cases, though it remains effective against conventional targets. The core is filled with solid iadrium, which is encased in a conductive polymer-ultrachrome composite to prevent wear inside the barrel and to facilitate the penetration of energy shields. The iadrium detonates on impact via a mass-reactive electric fuze, giving nigh-perfect reliability in exploding against both soft and hard targets. The blast has a radius of ~3-4 meters. However, the fire can spread beyond this, especially in the presence of flammable materials. Pertaining to its incendiary effects, the explosion and fire can reach temperatures in excess of two thousand five hundred degrees centigrade in a Type I atmosphere. The fire itself can burn for up to 30 seconds, though this can be longer if it spreads to flammable materials. Finally, the projectile has a roughly teardrop shape, for aerodynamic efficiency.
- High Explosive
- Pure explosive ammunition is designed primarily for anti-armor and area denial use cases, though it remains effective against conventional targets. The core is filled with solid baradium, which is encased in polymer-ultrachrome composite to prevent wear inside the barrel and to facilitate the penetration of energy shields. The baradium detonates on impact in a ~4-5 meter blast radius via a mass-reactive electric fuze, giving nigh-perfect reliability in exploding against both soft and hard targets. The projectile has a roughly teardrop shape, for aerodynamic efficiency.
- Smart Sharpnel
- A programmable, fragmenting projectile, smart shrapnel ammunition is designed for anti-aircraft, anti-infantry, and anti-vehicle use cases, featuring live adjustable burst-timing to optimize lethality against different targets. In terms of their construction, the outer casing of smart shrapnel rounds are encased in a conductive polymer-ultrachrome composite to prevent wear inside the barrel and to facilitate the penetration of energy shields. The core of the round has three main parts: a shrapnel matrix composed of 80 fin-stabilized tunqstoid micro-flechettes electroplated with ultrachrome, a plasma bursting charge with an adjustable delay, and a data link module that links to the host vehicle’s targeting system. Upon being fired, the projectile receives live updates from the host vehicle. Bursting time is dynamically based on target type, range to target (to optimize spread), and obstruction (delaying burst behind cover). Based on these factors, the burst charge goes off before impact (proximity burst) to create a cloud of hypervelocity shrapnel, after impact (penetration burst) for exploding inside heavy-armored targets, or at an optimal altitude (airburst) for area denial. The micro-flechettes released in the burst have a very high potential of shredding through targets, including vehicles, small craft, and infantry. However, while smart shrapnel shells are generally less effective against heavily armored targets the like of corvettes, superheavy walkers, and capital ships, they can still pose a threat if the penetration burst mode is used.

- Power and Discharge Systems
- Verpine Linear Motor and Gravity Coils
- Power Setting Modulation System
- At lower power settings, the projectile is imparted with a lower muzzle velocity. At higher power settings, the projectile has a higher muzzle velocity. On full power (the standard setting), the muzzle velocity is roughly 6 km/s. However, it should be noted that using the weapon at lower power settings will quite noticeably decrease the muzzle energy and effective range.

- Kinetic Train - The FAE/SW-16 has a verpine linear motor installed within the barrel that accelerates the slug to hypervelocity speeds. This blistering velocity imparts the projectile with a radically outsized kinetic potential, comparable to the muzzle energy of a primitive smoothbore tank gun. Thus, when fired at full power, the slug can punch through virtually all forms of small craft and vehicle-grade armor with almost contemptuous ease, while retaining respectable capability against corvette and light capital ship-grade armor. The optional explosive ammunition types offer further anti-armor utility, allowing for the engagement of ultra-resilient, heavy-armored targets.
- Surgical: The FAE/SW-16 has excellent accuracy and precision within its entire effective range band, maintaining the ability to reliably hit targets the size of shuura fruits in the process.
- Phase: The energy-reflective nature of the ultrachrome (used in the casing of all factory ammunition types) repels energy fields and gives the slugs an excellent chance of passing through energy shields. This allows for potentially significant efficacy against targets that are protected by energy shields.
- Adaptation: With its ammunition types, the FAE/SW-16 can be adapted to engage a wide range of targets.
- Power Dependence: The FAE/SW-16 does not have a wholly independent power supply. Any energy which fills the energy capacitor must come from the host unit or a separate, external generator. Should this power source be disrupted or by some means compromised, the weapon will only be able to rely on the energy stored within the capacitor.
- Ammunition Weight: Although more efficient than conventional slugthrowers which require propellant in order to fire, the FAE/SW-16 needs both physical ammunition and power cells. Thus, compared to energy weapons of the same class, the weapon’s ammunition is less mass and space-efficient.
- Storm Surge: As the FAE/SW-16 exclusively utilizes a verpine linear motor to fire, it is uniquely susceptible to EMP and Ion-based assaults. Unlike a typical slugthrower which utilizes chemical propellant, the weapon can quite feasibly be wholly disabled should it be hit by powerful ionizing discharge that overcomes its defenses.
- Mechanical Mutation: Like any piece of technology, the FAE/SW-16 is susceptible to mechu-deru and other technology-corrupting powers. If left unprotected, a practitioner of such esoteric sorceries could induce a jam or some other failure that might compromise the weapon entirely or demand precious time to fix, leaving the user vulnerable.
