DESCRIPTION
In the time of the High Republic, a large number of Consular Cruisers were constructed by the Correlian Engineering Corporation. When the Clone Wars erupted and lit the galaxy aflame, several Consular Cruisers were refit into the C70 configuration of armed Corvette, and the Consular Cruiser production was halted in favor of this small warship type.

However, the C70 was a hastily built warship made from an existing hullframe, and not purpose-built for the conflict at hand. As such, the designers at Correlian Engineering went to work on a corvette that could be assembled using many of the same components, but be much more heavily armed and given a needed combat role. They came up with the C75 Frigate, which was equipped with a staggering sixteen laser turrets so that it could join fleet formations in a fighter screening role. Swarms of droid fighters were a particular concern at the time, and it was hoped that a ship like the C75 could mitigate that threat.

Unfortunately, shortly after the C75 was put into production, the Clone Wars ended and the emerging Empire was interesting in shunting more work to Sienar and Kuat than towards Correlian Engineering. As such, the order for C75s was cancelled, and the already-constructed hundred or so C75 corvettes were put into storage for later conversion to civilian purpose and sale to the civilian market.

After a change in administration, and a shuffling of personnel, the C75s were forgotten. They remained undiscovered in storage for centuries in a long-forgotten Correlian Engineering auxiliary storage site.

Eventually, while expanding and re-opening defunct operations centers, Correlian Engineering rediscovered its own forgotten storage depot. The ancient C75s were still in fairly good shape, if also in need of updating for the modern market. After some debate, a decision was made not to undertake the cost of updating the ships, instead dumping them onto the Gray Market to free up space for new shipyard construction and storage.

These aged hulls floated around the galaxy’s secondary market for another fifty years, getting sold to Corporations, Planetary Defense Forces, and minor militaries. Over time, their numbers dwindled further, until the current age where perhaps only dozens of these still exist.

One surviving ship, the SS Vex, was a ship providing security for corporate ore shipments when it was attacked by pirates working for a Hutt based out of Torque. The SS Vex had fallen into disrepair, and half of its cannons weren’t working. It had long deterred pirates merely by being present in a convoy, without ever needing to fight. When it was finally faced by a determined foe, it was quickly overcome and captured

The pirates brought it back to their Hutt overlord, who decided to repair, refurbish, and re-arm the vessel to act as one of the jewels of his private fleet. Unfortunately for him, his engineer Veylin Torque and the repair and testing crew of the ship decided this would be a good time to quit. They stole the ship, declared it ‘legitimate salvage,’ re-named it the Dream Chaser and went into business as Privateers. The prices on their heads are formidable.

Now the Dream Chaser is the ship operated by the Wayward Children Privateer Company.

The ship benefits greatly from its refits and upgrades, paid for by its past Hutt owner. However, it does have a flaw. The Hutt decided it should be up-armed with two turbolaser turrets, something the Corvette had never been designed to support. For this reason, of ship’s power core can not support all of the weapons being energized at the same time. The ship’s Captain must choose between energizing the Turbolasers or the Laser Cannons. If both were operated at the same time, the power distribution system would overload and the ship’s other essential systems would lose power.

Despite this flaw, the vessel is otherwise a very formidable warfighter perfect in its original intended role as a starfighter or Corvette screening vessel. It’s also ideally sized for a small Privateer Company, with enough firepower to handle any job a small Company is likely to undertake.

EDIT RECORD: This post was edited to remove references to the ship being a 'frigate' and make it clear that it is a 'corvette.' 2/23/24
