Discovering the Unknown [CIS]

Void Station Delta, R&D Labs
Sarah twirled the shiny new pencil in her hand absentmindedly, while her friend next to her kept rambling on about quark arrangement. They, along with 20 others, were working on new designs for the CIS, working to create brand new technology. She and Lyndia were creating a new type of blaster, that could penetrate all conventional armour. Of course, it was all still in the theoretical phase, and Sarah was tired from the long journey here. "Sarah! Are you even listening!", shouted her friend in exasperation at the blank look on Sarah's face. "As I was saying, we need to figure out a way to contain the baryon pulses in a symmetrical cylinder.". Sarah sat up groggily, and mumbled a reply. "Sounds interesting..." Suddenly, Sarah sat bolt upright, a look of awe on her face. The scientists in the cubicle next to them had just produced a number of very colourful explosions, it seemed. The patterns in the vibrant smoke lingered in Sarah's eye even after they had long disappeared. Then, Lyndia shoved a bunch of blueprints in face, disrupting the mental image. It was going to be a long day...

Sarah looked down at her HoloPad, trying to figure out the jumble of raw data, that had just come through. "0.001% efficiency? I guess it's an improvement, but still...", she trailed off, rubbing her eyes. The weapon worked by accelerating a tight beam of particles to relativistic speeds, and then firing the beam at a target. The resulting fusion and plasma created upon impact, would be enough to destroy most defences. Unfortunately, the beam was useless on land, as air got in the way, but in the vacuum of space it could still prove useful. The power drain was excessive, but by using the latest components, they could cut it down to a reasonable amount. Sadly, it was barley working. Shields proved little problem for the modified beam, but against actual armour, they were underperforming. The latest test had made a few sparks against a metal sheet. There was definitely a lot left to do...
