Intent: To create a main-line warship for the Suns as part of a fleet's core.
Development Thread: None
Manufacturer: Koensayr Manufacturing
Model: Dirge-Class SD
Affiliation: Black Suns
Modularity: None
Production: Minor
Material: Durasteel, Trainsparisteel, Turadium
Description: Slow and ponderous like its namesake, the Dirge wont be winning any races. That's alright with it though, the funeral march put out by it's massive long-range batteries will lull anything into the great beyond from it's own wall of battle just fine. In fact, those eighteen guns represent the bulk of the ship's firepower and their range partially compensates for the Dirge's sluggish mobility. Everything in the ship caters to them from the massive turadium-armored power conduits that feed them to the positioning of the defensive guns tightening up around them to ward off fighters. Even the hull armor thickens around (and under) them in case one explodes. The rest of the weapons are more evenly distributed around the ship offering good defensive fields of fire even to the rear. Overzealous fighter and bomber pilots will quickly find themselves targeted by turreted missile launchers and any capital ship that manages to close will quickly discover that those same launchers can switch over to a magazine feed of torpedoes to deal with the bigger stuff.

Like most traditional Sun designs, the Command Bridge and most other control centers are sunk deep within the hull and armored with their own layer of turadium 75cm thick along with the ship's hypermatter reactor for increased safety should something manage to penetrate the two meters of ion-hardened durasteel main armor lining the hull. Flat and slanted with multiple faces, the armor is supposed to give better protection against the physical projectiles making a resurgence in modern fleets while still holding up against traditional laser fire.

Designed as an anti-capital ship brawler, the Dirge is forced to rely on escorts for defense and to put out fighter screens to prevent flanking maneuvers. Deploying or getting caught out alone is definitely not something a ship captain would want to do as it lacks sufficient defensive weapons for a ship of its size and all the armor in the world can only delay the inevitable. The raw material cost alone also puts the price tag on one of these behemoths near that of an Apollyon Command Carrier and its specialized command equipment. That said, get in front of one of these as a hostile, be prepared to have a very bad day.

Hello [member="Domino"] , nice sub, thanks for laying out the gun maths for me! :)

I'm going to get a clarification, but I thought proton bombs would count as a heavy warhead.

Secondly, is the source of the image really a wiki? It shouldn't be, hopefully the Wiki should have some kind of reference to the author. Could you check for me please?

Proton bombs are bomber ordinance and replace their missile/torpedo count when used; so I've always counted them as a small warhead.

Running a Google image search only yielded similar results, so I kept that as the source since that's where I first found it.

Because I'm a plant.
I mean a fighter in canon carries Proton Rockets, and assault concussion missiles... they are still heavy. missiles and generally effect the count of how many the fighter carries which is comparable to a proton bomb. *shrugs* I just work here I could see arguments both ways.

Honestly though regardless of them being heavy or not my biggest issue with them on a cap ship is that they rely predominantly on a fighters inertia for movement.

Regardless you changed it and this is approved.
