OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
SETTING INFORMATION
  • Structure Name: Defiance Nova
  • Classification: Shadowport & Listening Post
  • Location: Innton II
  • Affiliation: Rimward Trade League- The Underground
  • Accessibility: Defiance Nova is well-hidden on the sparsely populated and mostly-overlooked colony world of Innton II. Buried deep within a cave and tunnels further underground. One has to know the location to find it, generally, and especially with a sensor-disruptor and camo netting at the entrance, while a small team guards the cave entrance.
  • Description: A large cavern filled by the wreck of an old Clone Wars vessel and the remains of an old Rebel Alliance starfighter base, currently operating primarily as a shadow port and base for the Underground working along the end of the Rimma Trade Route.
POINTS OF INTEREST
  • Nova Defiant: Wreckage from an old Clone Wars Recusant-class destroyer, owned by the original CIS, and left unfinished as a base. The focal point of the shadowport, the ship serves as a combination control center, living quarters, supply stockpile, and cantina. The reactors have been retrofitted and replaced to give the base enough power to function. The old hull platings have been peeled away from the ship's structure and propped up as canopies, which tend to function as temporary vendor booths as people cycle in and out of the shadowport, eager to make a bit of a profit during their downtime. Corridors are lit by power lanterns but are still fairly narrow and rough, with mechanically operated doors into various rooms and segments of the ship. While it may be a bit cramped, the Nova Defiant can squeeze in about 200 sentients, although the usual population fluctuates between 40 and 60. Some of the tinkerers even managed to get some of the point-defense cannons facing the entrance up and running again.
  • Defiant Core Base: Later used by the Rebel Alliance, the Defiant Core was a Y-wing squadron's base along the Rimma Trade Route during the Galactic Civil War. As a result, they added a refueling station, small hangar-bays, a tactical control center, repair station, and other essentials for an independent fighter squadron. Most of that still exists and remains in use, replaced and repaired by the Underground techs. They've changed the materials to focus primarily on light freighters, but they can still handle snubfighters. There are additional living quarters here, primarily for the docking master and mechanics, but free traders too drunk to fly may sometimes be pressed into a bedroom until they sober up.
  • Landing Field: The bulk of the area in the cavern, the landing field was used as a construction base for the CIS and then the landing field for the Rebel Alliance squadron. It still serves its function, although now it holds more light freighters than fighters, there are usually a few freelance fighter pilots lurking between jobs. At full capacity, the landing field can hold four squadrons of snubfighters or 16ish freighters. It is artificially flattened and reinforced with duracrete.
  • The Deep Hold: What remains of the destroyer's cargo hold, Alee Pont has given this to the Underground as their local base. The Deep Hold is near the stern of the ship, away from the entrance, and bordered on one side by the walls of the mountain and the other side by the ship's stern, creating a fairly secure location. It is only accessible by a corridor tucked away in the middle of the ship, but there is a tunnel that leads into one of the flooded branches of the Back Door. The Deep Hold has one segment dedicated to the listening post and intelligence analysis, another dedicated to tradecraft and technical skills, and the final portion dedicated to operational briefings.
  • The Rimma Jig: The social hub of the shadowport, taking up most of the old bridge of the destroyer, the Rimma Jig is a makeshift cantina and restaurant, serving Sullustan and Eriaduan food primarily, with a wide variety of alcoholic beverages sold in bottles and cans, rather than anything on tap. There are a few tables for gambling, a fifth-hand jukebox playing mostly one-hit wonders from half-forgotten bands. The Jig, and most of the shadowport, is run by Alee Pont, a Sullustan who was once an ORC partisan before going into prospecting, which was how she discovered the old base.
  • The Back Door: Some prospectors strike it rich, while others realize they're in the wrong business. Such is the case for Alee Pont and her crew of Sullustan sappers. Hoping to find some rich veins beneath the cave, they excavated carefully and deeply beneath the cavern, creating a complicated network of tunnels and caverns stretching far from the cave entrance. Eventually, they ended up on the other side of the mountain, flooding the lowest portions of the network before they could seal the breach. Jokingly, they called it the back door, which after some consideration, became a reality. Alee Pont created a code which she carved into the various junctions to lead to the flooded chamber, which opened up beneath a lake on the far side of the mountain. In the worst-case scenario, this network could serve as a last refuge, a supply cache for a siege, or a series of barracks or medbays. But for now, it's mostly empty, save for the ones closest to the surface, which store Alee Pont's foodstuffs and drinks.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Nobody knows how long ago the cave was formed, and nobody particularly cares. Innton II is a colony world that never took off, despite its proximity to the Rimma Trade Route and wealthy Eriadu and Seswenna sectors. Colonized prior to the Clone Wars, the world remained sparsely populated throughout the war and the reign of the Palpatine's Empire.

During the Clone Wars, however, a Separatist warship was damaged during a battle and crashed onto Innton II. It was mostly intact, but it would never fly again. Undaunted, the Confederacy hauled the vessel into a nearby cavern, where they scrapped and readjusted the wreckage into a base, although the war ended before they had a chance to finish it.

Recalled by their local governments, the base and wreckage were left abandoned for years before scouts from the Rebel Alliance discovered it. Seeing its excellent locale and much of the heavy work already completed, the Rebel Alliance used it as a base for a squadron of Y-Wings.

Eventually, they too left the station abandoned and it remained forgotten, except to the few adventurous locals before the Gulag Plague.

Centuries passed. The cavern protected most of the material left behind until former Partisan sapper Alee Pont and her crew stumbled upon the cavern while prospecting. Initially viewing it as a curiosity, they paid little attention to it, focusing instead on the chance of finding ore veins. They found no ore and ran out of funding to relocate their stake.

Desperate and looking for some way to turn their fortunes around, they started poking around the stuff left behind in hopes of finding some valuable artifacts to sell. Instead, they found some records of the location's usage as a base, both for the CIS and the Rebel Alliance.

That sparked an idea and they refocused their efforts into renovating the cavern and turning it into a shadowport, which was indeed significantly more profitable than prospecting. Reaching out to old contacts among the partisans and the Underground, they could get it up and running again.

Much to their surprise, they found some old BX series commando droids deep in storage that had been left behind after the wars, and they were able to get recharged and reprogrammed to act as the primary peacekeeping force for the shadowport. They also restored the reactors to a small amount and was able to replace some of the ship's equipment through additional generators. These they focused on necessities like power, refreshers, and food storage/prep. They also replaced the parts on eight of the old point-defense laser cannons pointing towards the cave entrance and connected some smaller targeting computers to them. The weapons themselves are still set for starfighters and missiles, making them not the most accurate in infantry and light vehicles. However, they can still pack quite a powerful punch against medium vehicles and above and track ships coming in for the rather perilous landing approach. A sensor disruptor supports these to prevent scans from detecting the presence of ships and engine exhaust trails in the area, and a camouflage netting across the entrance to help keep it out of sight of prying eyes. When ships are coming into land, they contact Defiance Nova on an encrypted comlink, and when they make their final approach, the netting is pulled aside by an ingenious array of pulleys. There is also an 880 Palisade shield generator on standby, should an emergency arise, dedicated to covering the main area of the shadowport and the entrance.

With the growing turmoil in the galaxy and the resurgence of the Sith and the regional imperials, Alee reached out to Aeshi Tillian, who reached out to the Underground operating around the League space. They came in and were able to set themselves up with a sector headquarters to look after the Rimma Trade Route and the surrounding sectors, especially after the actions of the Final Dawn in the Eriadu and Seswenna Sectors, the encroaching Sith, and the politicking of the Empire in the Eriadu Authority. They focused on creating a communication/listening post with training and some operational capabilities. As a result, there is a small garrison of former ORION Huntsmen who have taken to working with the Underground operatives, adding some additional security to the location, unless they are engaged in an operation of some sort.

As Aeshi helped haul in supplies, she shared the location with a few trusted compatriots, especially those in what she jokingly calls the "Captain's Coterie"- primarily Arkyn Rane Arkyn Rane , Porro Tanau Porro Tanau , Yula Perl Yula Perl , Mariah of House Marr Mariah of House Marr , Raefe Khilasa Raefe Khilasa , Kaia Starchaser Kaia Starchaser , and Varen Ardos Varen Ardos .
