Public Debutante

PLANET : Coruscant
LOCATION : Imperial City

Standing before the golden doors, Emilel clutched her dress.

Today is one of the most important days of her life. Today, she’s finally an adult. Today her life starts—and it all hinges on how well she can “perform” at this party.

She tries to smother the growing panic in her stomach, but the doors suddenly gaping open take away her chance. She can feel the eyes of her parents even from here.
This is it.

Plastering on her smile, she glides in on glittering black heels, jumping into the maws of the real—and viciously adult—world.

It’s not often that the Prolom family throws a ball. When they do—maybe once in three years, if even that—it’s lavish, and today is especially so. You had received an invite some months back, a red paper with gold-etched writing that said they were celebrating their youngest daughter’s coming-of-age at their home. Thus, to mark this special occasion they cordially invite you to bless their daughter and this new chapter in their life.

The air is thick with cologne and chatter as you make your way through the hall. The walls are lined with long tables filled with decorations and plates; small lights cast shadows of them. Under the golden doors, with abstract designs carved in, light from the party spills out on the floor. They swing open as you approach, and a butler announces your presence as you walk in.

Welcome to the Prolom Ball.

Objectives :

Have fun. The Ballroom is massive and with enough space for everyone to go around. Grab a partner or go yourself to have a spin! There’s also a platform in the middle where, if you feel brave, you can jump up and sing, give a speech, etc.

Socialise. Making connections is important. Gossip with your fellow attendees or slip away behind the numerous corners, hidden by the curtains, for conversation best left unheard.

Feast and Drink. Isn’t the best part of a party the food? Make your way through the banquet table and gorge yourself with delicacies from around the galaxy. Sip drinks and order around the droids whizzing around to cater to people.

Take a break. Balls are fun, but they can be exhausting. Sit down on the velvet cushions for a while or go to the balcony to look at the stars. Get some peace by asking a waiter to guide you to a private room and maybe take a power-nap. Though be careful—don’t break anything there!

Talk to Emilel. Our lovely debutante is a bit overwhelmed tonight, and has slipped between the crowds to hide in a corner. You can strike a friendly conversation with her, or try to pry into some secrets of her influential family through her. You may be surprised by what you hear, or disappointed. Once again, be careful because you never know who’s hearing…

Stand. Sip your drink as you realise that maybe you are better off watching holo-dramas at home. Take a look at the ruby-encrusted flowers and cringe at the luxury. Maybe you and Emilel can stand around together in awkward, awkward solidarity!

Explore. The Prolom mansion is huge, and there are many secrets of it. Maybe you are a business rival wanting to bring them to ruin, or maybe you are just a curious person with innocent intentions. Either way, you sneak away when no one’s looking and into the inner chambers of the house. As you go in, you are more and more intrigued and confused by the twisting maze-like structure, and you keep feeling eyes on you—perhaps it wasn’t a good idea to go in…

Go to the gardens! The night air is crisp, and the critters of the night gather for their symphony here. The flowers are beautiful and worthy of admiration.
Make sure you don’t get locked out, though!

Start trouble. You feel this family must pay for their sins, and you have come solely for revenge. While you can cause mayhem with nothing but a few words, if you want it to be quick you can take a match and ‘accidentally’ throw them near the curtains. They catch fire too easily, and smell strangely sweet. Don’t breathe in too much near them, and keep out of harm’s way.

I had received a coded holo on the ShadowNet; a callout for some party crashers! After all the wars in Wild Space and then the fouled-up heist on Denon that cost me my custom hackbox computer, this is exactly what I need right now.

It's not hard to slip in attached to one of the guests I've charmed into letting me tag along as his "+1"

"I'll be back, sweetheart. To the ladies." -- blows the fugly old guy a kiss as I make a hasty retreat; wants to vomit --

Now that he's served his purpose, it's time to see who's here for the fun -- grabs a glass of bubbly, mingles while scoping out the room --

It’s not easy to evade the smiling well-wishers at first as they crowded around her. With her smile still intact she greeted them all one-by-one, and by the end of it that smile had become frayed and more of a stretching of the lips. No matter how many times she has practiced, the real thing will always scare her.

Finally, she gets a moment of quiet as sits on a chair and sighs. They really went all out for her birthday—it looked like a room fit for royalty. Emilel just hoped she could pay it back to her parents, who sacrificed so much for her. Her worst fear is disappointing them.

She gracefully arranges herself as she waits for the next person to approach her. Maybe she can sneak in a pastry between this. Every being on Coruscant has arrived today, so she ‘needs to show her best self to the world,’ as her Mother put it.

Mr. Nine was always one for getting into trouble. One might assume this odd of a distinguished explorer, especially ex-Galactic Alliance military personnel, but Nine was not your average flunked cadet. Nine was always on the search for a new thrill, and sometimes thrills came in the most unassuming of locations. Coruscant high society. A bore, mostly, and a group Nine found to be out of touch (he was from the Coruscant underbelly, after all). Still, he had always found breaking into a party and watching the rich folk pretend to get along amusing. He had dawned a nicer bluish gray suit, though he kept his trademark hat firmly on his head. Within his coat, which was a proper looking trench coat with flowing coattails, was his trusty blaster. He never left home without it, after all. It didn't take long for Nine to be amongst the top-siders. He simply scaled a few backwalls and slipped through a window. Before long he had a glass of non-alcoholic seltzer in hand, making up 'sophisticated' tall-tales about his carrier as an Umbaran politician, delivering it with a thick accent. The guests seemed to eat it up.

"...quite a peculiar moment I found myself in, I'd say" Nine continued in a posh accent. "It isn't often one finds themselves going over ancient records in a trial, but the fellow was quite insistent that his claim to former Trade Federation holdings was valid, you see. Of course, he missed the mark by a few thousand years. The Exploitation Region's been bloody dead for eons!"

The guests around him burst into laugher. Nine paused to swirl his seltzer.

"Eventually, the court deemed that we might as well spare the soul some of his inherited resources." Nine added after taking a sip. "I'm sure he made off like a proper bandit with the soil he recovered."

The patrons listening to him were positively rolling now, and Nine was eating it up. He disliked their easy living, but boy did their lack of intuition give him a kick. He'd hang around for a few more hours, then the real fun would begin... Making his escape.

Okay, that’s enough greeting. Emilel wipes off a thin layer of sweat and retreats to a small corner.

She notices two people she had not seen before; both were mingling with a crowd while their eyes roamed around. She also notices her mother trying to stare holes into her, so she finally gets up to socialise.

She goes to the beautiful Twi’lek lady first. “Hello, thank you for coming to our party, it’s a great honour. I believe we have not met before, so I wanted to introduce myself.” It’s automatic now, saying this greeting.
