DESCRIPTION
As the Stygian Campaign ended in failure, the Galactic City Authority, the governing body of Coruscant, recognized the potential threat that the Alliance's withdrawal invited. With Coruscant having been sacked time and again, the time had come to see a reinvigoration of the Coruscant Guard, and the Home Defence Fleet. While both institutions existed, in some form or another, they lacked the funding and manpower that was needed to make them a credible fighting force. In many respects, these brave Coruscanti were simply a glorified Security Force that maintained Law and Order in the Outer System edges. But, with the right approvals and Senatorial support, the Galactic City Authority sought to change what such a time-honoured organization had become - bringing both iterations of the CorGuard and the Home Defence Fleet back to their militant roots.

Thus, the GCA turned to the Republic Engineering Corporation to commission a new line of warships for the Coruscanti Defence Force. They needed something that would make them stand apart from their cousins in the Galactic Alliance - rather than repatriating their own warships with what amounted to their own hard-earned Credits. And so, the Shipwright eagerly threw themselves at the drawing board - seeking to not only make their vessels visually distinct, but play upon that believed nostalgia factor many within the Alliance were fond of. That proverbial quest led them to the ancient series of vessels that were lovingly bequeathed the Hammerhead appellation. While there were many iterations of this series, the Coruscanti Shipwright focused on the most recent version that was uncovered; the Sphyrna - Class Hammerhead Corvette.

While the recovered schematics were admittedly smaller than desired, it was little issue to increase the size along certain vectors - essentially upscaling the Corvette to fulfill the requirements of a Frigate-sized warship. With the additional space provided by the shift in size classifications, the Coruscanti Shipwright was able to weave more of their technological advancements into their newest design. These advancements included, but weren’t limited to, a host of new weaponry, additional armour plating and an advanced variant of deflector shielding technology. With those new inclusions to the Starship’s design, the newly christened Dauntless became quite the adaptable and versatile warship - capable of engaging several combat scenarios head-on, and emerging victorious. At least, should a competent Captain be at the helm.

One of the major departures from standard REC designs, was the advancements to the Point Defence Network, as Pulse Cannons were utilized in lieu of the standardized Laser Cannons seen elsewhere. These aforementioned energy weapons differed from their conventional cousins in how their plasmatic bolts were generated, as the process was done through a more traditional fusion-based reaction, rather than a catalytic conversion. This process produced a more destructive bolt than conventional blasters, as the plasma - that held the heat that licked across the surface of stars - burned through their targets instead of causing an explosion of plasmatic particles. Naturally, the ability to produce a considerable amount of these fusion-based bolts in rapid succession added to the lethality of these weapons, as they were capable of taking out entire groups of fast-moving targets.

When utilized in the Point Defence Network? Those cannons were capable of saturating the bespeckled ether with a stream of fusion-fire projectiles. Such a deed was suitably more effective than stitching the stars with pinpoint laserfire.

While there were other notable improvements to the starship’s overall design, the Dauntless also bore a heavily armoured prow - effectively carrying the spiritual legacy of the Sphyrna forward into the modern era. Although ramming was an ineffective tactic against larger vessels, whilst they were still operational, the reinforced prow and overlaid shielding suites made the Dauntless a nightmare to any vessels that held a smaller sensor profile. Due to their hardy construction, honeycombed interior, and the inclusion of anti-concussion force fields, it was likely that one of these frigates would sustain minimal damage after forcing their way through a smaller vessel, such as a Corvette or a Gunboat. Naturally, such capabilities varied as there were starships that broke away from the conventional mold.

Nevertheless, when all of the factors were blended together, the Dauntless was an impressive warship and a potent addition to the Coruscant Home Defence Fleet.
