SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Making extensive use of the research Aurora Industries has been conducting into hypergates within the galaxy and dark energy research, the Crucius TX-100 Etherdrive and its supporting systems are able to create temporary space-time rifts or portals in sub-hyperspace to allow instantaneous travel for the equipped starship. The Crucius does so through a proprietary dark energy collection system making use of micro-scaled dark energy absorption tunnels scattered across a starship's hull that slowly collect the necessary amount of dark energy for conversion into quintessence within the actual Crucius drive. The stored dark energy is altered into quintessence energy within the device, kept stable by use of a ship-scaled thermal oscillator and containment system, that can then be released as phantom energy once the Crucius is engaged by the ship's crew.
  • To create the portals, the Crucius taps into the navigational charts and maps stored within a ship's navicomputer, calculating the best location within both the ship's current system and its destination and then channeling the quintessence stored within it as phantom energy through specially designed emitters scattered across the ship's hull. The primary arrays are placed on the bow of the ship to first create the portal while the emitters placed along the hull are used to keep enough phantom energy flowing into the portal to keep it stable long enough for the ship to pass through it.
  • Due to the power requirements for all these systems, and as a first-generation system created by Aurora Industries, the system can only be installed on frigate-scale ships (100 meters and larger) or larger. While the company has plans to develop a smaller-scale system, it will require further research and development.
  • While the system makes use of quintessence and phantom energy to create space-time tears in sub-hyperspace, the system can't be converted in any way into a superweapon that could replicate the effects of Starkiller Base. The Crucius is designed specifically for interstellar travel and no other purpose.
STRENGTHS
  • The system makes use of a proprietary dark energy collection and emitting system to create temporary portals through sub-hyperspace to connect two points in real space that allow for instantaneous travel for the equipped starship.
  • Multiple redundancy and safety features are included into the system to avoid any accidents that could result in either destruction of the ship or anything around it, although as detailed below, issues can occur.
WEAKNESSES
  • If a sufficient number of the phantom energy emitter arrays on the ship's hull become damaged, any sub-hyperspace portal created by the system risks becoming unstable and collapsing on the ship attempting to pass through it, likely severing it into two pieces or outright disintegrating the ship.
  • If the thermal oscillator is damaged in any way, and the system is engaged, the collected dark energy in all its forms will react violently and tear the ship apart in an explosion that could create a miniature star.
  • While the system is engaged, to ensure a stable portal creation, an equipped starship's shields must be lowered to prevent any sort of interference with the phantom energy emitter array across the hull. This could be potentially problematic in a combat situation as it would leave a vessel susceptible to enemy attacks and potentially damage the arrays until the shield can be re-engaged.
  • The system cannot be utilized within the gravity well of a planet, as a safeguard to ensure the phantom energy creating the portals could not potentially ignite a planet's atmosphere or otherwise create potentially damaging events. The system can only be engaged once a ship has cleared a planet's gravity well and magnetic field, although it does make use of a starship's sensors and navigational data to prevent interference from artificial gravity wells such as from interdictors.
  • The Crucius can only be installed on starships 100 meters or larger due to the power requirements and systems necessary for its operation.
DESCRIPTION

As the galaxy and its powers, both factions and megacorporations, began to gain a greater understanding in how systems such as the hypergates scattered around the galaxy, Aurora Industries was no exception. Research into hypergates had begun as far back as the aftermath of the Battle of Asation during the Tenth Sith Empire, both through corporate scientists and Sith researchers, although major breakthroughs into the study of the devices wouldn't occur for decades. In recent years, Aurora Industries scientists and engineers were able to study Rakatan teleportal technologies on Belsavis, concluding that dark energy was essential for the device's functionality and determining a similar energy was needed for hypergates created by the Gree. In the race to understand these devices, Aurora Industries and its leadership already knew they were behind some key competitors such as Locke and Key Mechanics and shifted their research into an entirely different system.

Developed under the codename Project Tezzeret, all of the company's research into dark energy and teleportation were shifted into that project based out of Nightshade Station in the Styx system. The company was also able to obtain both records of the conversion and collection of dark energy into quintessence from old First Order databases and through discussions with Mara TibX scientists that had developed their own quintessence power system. The device that would become known as the Crucius TX-100 Etherdrive began to take shape in the late 890s, with the first successful prototypes being completed and tested in 902 ABY, with an equipped Aurora Industries frigate successfully creating a stable portal to connect the Styx system and the Tyus Cluster long enough for the ship to pass through it.

The project also took on some urgency for development as the galaxy was gripped with the events of the Sundering Dawn crisis, as whole worlds shifted and hyperlanes collapsed, as parts of the galaxy were isolated by the Blackwall of the Sith. The Crucius was seen by company scientists and leadership as a solution for these problems.
