Hierarchy: A military hierarchy is used, with senior-most officers being Rear Admirals. These ranks correspond to equivalent ranks in the Confederate military. Above the rank of Rear Admiral, who usually commands a flotilla, is entirely civilian leadership, being the uppermost echelons of the Ministry of Science. Below are listed ranks of officers and enlisted personnel, together with abbreviations and titles, as well as distinctive rank insignia.

  • Ensign (EN, or “Ensign”) – None.

Membership: Approximately 20-30,000 officers and enlisted personnel, garrisoned across Ministry of Science ships and facilities throughout the CIS, and drawn from across the myriad worlds and sentient species of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Members may enlist directly, or may transfer from the CIS military, or may be granted commissions with advanced degrees from either CISMA or an accredited university. Interested persons are encouraged to seek out a CIS recruiter.
Climate: Despite its ever-present military culture, there is a distinctive non-military ‘vibe’ present across the Corps, energized by intellectualism, scientific study, exploration, and humanitarian compassion.
Reputation: The scientific and humanitarian roles of this organization have given it a popularity across the CIS and a general status of esteem and appreciation by worlds and peoples throughout the galaxy.

Rules: Run in a military fashion, with a strict hierarchy, regulations, and directives established and originated by the Ministry of Science, and having specialized branches, listed below with brief descriptions of their insignia:
  • Exploration & Study (“E&S”) – A compass rose.
  • Research & Development (“R&D”) – A round-bottom flask over a flame.
  • Security – A pair of crossed swords.
  • Fleet Operations {“FO” or “Fleet”) – A fouled anchor with a sextant imposed over it.
  • Medical {“Med”) – A caduceus symbol.
Goals: To further scientific discovery, technological advancement, and cultural understanding throughout the Confederacy of Independent Systems and across the galaxy, even into unknown space; to safeguard the lives and dignity of all sentient beings and to preserve and record the natural history and ecology of the same; to explore and catalog the galaxy and the space beyond; and, to champion the ideals of the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Formed in the wake of the Battle of Taanab (856 ABY), the Corps of Discovery is the paramilitary arm of the Confederacy of Independent Systems’ Ministry of Science. Charged with carrying out the activities and operations of the Corps’ five flotillas of exploratory vessels and with performing other duties within the Ministry, the Corps of Discovery answers directly to senior-level Ministry officials and is essentially at the command of Minister of Science, John Locke, who ordered the Corps’ creation.

Popular throughout the Confederacy due to its scientific and humanitarian roles, its members are widely regarded as being highly professional, incredibly capable and competent, and exceptionally dedicated to their missions. Their high esprit de corps and impressive standards for admission make them a very capable and proficient service and an asset to the Ministry of Science’s wide-ranging mission.
