    INITIATION

Most functional members of society have healthy memories of what their life was like as a child, filled with warmth and smiles. Such would be the lot in life for your average Imperial citizen in this day and age, but this is not the case for those chosen for a life of service in answer to a higher calling within the Eternal Empire’s more selective and elite institutions. For the vast majority, military service is a choice (albeit, a highly encouraged choice leading to full citizenship). Making that choice often forms the entire trajectory of their life from that point forward, with still many others choosing to make such a life a full career of service and discipline. Yet, for those like the Blackwatch agent known as ‘Cirrus’, the prerogative of choice is as distant a privilege as if being raised upon the lap of luxury itself. His earliest memory is that of being a child amongst hundreds of others, adorned in spartan uniforms identifying themselves as wards of the Imperial state on Bakura. Later in life, he would come to learn that he was an orphaned boy; his father giving his life in service to Emperor Tacitus during his wars of Imperial expansion, and his mother perishing from a pox epidemic within the districts housing the planet’s agricultural laborers. Having no other family either able or willing to take on yet another mouth to feed during what was described as a rather turbulent time (although it is more likely his extended family also suffered from similar circumstances), he was taken in as mentioned earlier by the only family he had ever known.

Yet, his destiny did not lie with applying himself to back-breaking labor in the pursuit of scraping a living on the streets. As fate would have it, the right individuals within the Imperial bureaucracy would see within him a latent gift which would uniquely qualify him for the life he eventually came to. Ever the utilitarian society, the Eternal Empire subjected such youths as Cirrus to rigorous aptitude and personality testing, so as to optimize their education from a formative age. As indicated earlier, the majority of children in such a situation would be placed within foster care under the stewardship of another family, in the hopes they would become a functional member of society. Yet, results from Cirrus’ testing yielded a high aptitude for critical thinking, social skills, and a latent force sensitivity. His presence within the force was too subdued for legitimate consideration within the ranks of the Wardens of the Shroud, but case officers with knowledge of his potential also deemed him valuable enough to be inducted into entry-level programs designed to groom young ones for service within the secretive Imperial secret police entity known as Blackwatch. Placement into this program instantly shifted the focus of Cirrus’ life, and would forever more alter his development. His ‘casual play’ consisted of subtle social interactions and closed studies with other similarly gifted youths; designed to develop the arts of social manipulation, nuance, and guile. As he grew older into adolescence, his training would morph into more tactical exercises, beginning with rudimentary physical exercise and ‘unit’ based training and development. After demonstrating excellence in both, he would progress even further into more subtler and focused variations of his training - progressing with a progressively smaller & smaller class of gifted youths as they delved deeper into the Blackwatch training regimen. The versatility with which he demonstrated himself precluded him from the crippling effects of full psionic conditioning - a process used to spawn the Blackwatch Psi-corps; and his gifts were diverse enough to spare him from assignment into a simple special operations unit. No, his fate would be far more precise, and far more far reaching.

Eventually, his education would reach its pinnacle as he was utilized in junior-level assignments, deployed with security units throughout the Empire to gain field experience, utilizing cover identities to preserve the true nature of his tutelage. To those he worked alongside, he was simply a gifted cadet who was completing his training within Blackwatch’s officer corps, but the truth would only dawn upon him as he came of age, and those who had groomed him from boyhood saw fit to progressively reveal such truths to him over the years. He was the first among a new breed of Blackwatch agents - selected from the Empire’s disaffected and literally raised to be the epitome of Imperial mental, genetic, and social conditioning. His name; his true name - was known only to those who originally found him as a lonely orphan boy, and he was conditioned to keep that identity a secret to all but the privileged few who knew him from boyhood. As he grew into a man, the boy had been meticulously stripped away to reveal a precisely honed and shaped weapon for use to further the Empire’s goals throughout the galaxy. His physique - perfect; his mind - ruthlessly brought to heel around the Imperial dogma of order and compliance; His body - a finely tuned tool which could fill the role of both a ruthlessly efficient killer or a silent shadow in the night.

His psyche was almost-perfectly manicured to allow for him to assume the personalities and quirks of a completely different persona, allowing for him to near-seamlessly meld into a deep cover operation per the mandates of his superiors. His penultimate assignment was to do just that - to penetrate a dangerous and increasingly potent rebel cell developing within the heartland of the Empire upon his twentieth birthday. For years, communication between Cirrus and his handlers within Blackwatch fell silent, as did the others of his class of new agents who departed on similar assignments. As the years unfolded, bodies began to pile up - both those of targets these agents were deployed to penetrate, and the occasional operative who had proven themselves unworthy to the task. In the case of Cirrus however, his trial would equate to a singular success worthy of analysis by prospective agents today.

Scheming nobles and politicians had long planned to subvert the rule of Emperor Tacitus, with attempts rising in both severity and frequency near the end of his reign. The last attempt to do so prior to his eventual exile and abdication to Empress L’lerim took the form of a failed coup, disrupted before it ever began in earnest. A massive social gala on the planet of Orellon II had been disrupted by a surprise and very tragic incident involving the failure of the reactor core of an otherwise secure complex, under the ownership of the planetary governor. According to news outlets, the tragedy was an ‘unfortunate accident’ resulting in the death of several key upstanding Imperial officials, including the governor himself. Yet, to those who knew what they were looking for, they would know this to be not only the end of what could have been a very successful coup attempt, but the graduation of one of their finest prospective agents. The noblemen and women killed in the explosion, according to sealed Blackwatch records, all were suspected seditionists, with the only surviving member of the Governor’s household being his fourth son, who had thus far served as an Imperial Ward upon the throne world. As the surviving scion of the planetary governor addressed the state-run media, the face of Cirrus himself could be seen at his side - an anonymous, nameless face that was unimportant to all save those he reported back to in Blackwatch high command. To them, his presence was a clear confirmation of their agent's readiness for full assignment, and graduation into becoming a full Blackwatch Agent.

In the years that followed, the agent known as Cirrus has been deployed on a myriad of missions, both clandestine and more overt. Typically, he has seen action via deep cover deployment within extremist, anti-imperial organizations, as well as solo-deployment into tactical operations requiring more finesse than a typical special operations unit can marshal. Specific operations have featured infiltration within the now-defunct Hutt Republic, cells within the Eclipse Rebellion, and assassinations of formerly outspoken critics to the current Imperial Regime staged under suspicious circumstances. Cirrus is among the foremost of Blackwatch’s deadliest agents; capable of both operating under deep cover, as well as under conditions deemed impossible to succeed in.

His exact identity is a carefully guarded secret, for at any given time he could be under the guise of a new identity wherein his physical features are morphed or otherwise altered. Only one thing is for certain with respect to his operational ability; you will never know you’ve dealt with Cirrus, unless you need to know. If you need to know, you are either among the Imperial elite, or you are among the hunted.

When off duty (as rare as such a circumstance is for him), Cirrus can be described as charming in both appearance and countenance. He wears the usual black uniforms of the Blackwatch, observing others in the background with his ever searching hazel eyes. He has a distinguishable cleft in his chin, and his facial structure is quite sharp and angular - giving him a striking appearance. When on assignment, he is capable of altering his appearance seemingly at will thanks to the miracles of technology and disguise. It is not uncommon for him to appear like a random street thug, an unwashed vagabond, or an alluring courtesan (don’t ask). He is equally at home in a set of matte-black tactical armor behind the grip of a rifle, with mud caked on his face and carbon scoring on his clothing. In summary, it is hard to say that anyone has truly seen the real man known as ‘Cirrus’, for he is a man of many faces and many talents. He is broad of chest, and carries himself with a casual ease which bespeaks a level of high confidence in his physical abilities.

Personality wise, Cirrus is cold and calculating, but also has been known to be rather gregarious and magnanimous. By virtue of his intensive training and conditioning, he possesses the distinct impression of being able to ‘read’ other people, even engaging in what many would assume baseless supposition over simple observation of small nuances in body language. Of course, this can also be attributed in part to his sharpened presence in the force, which is not as volatile or intense as a full member of the Psi-Corps, but ever presence nonetheless.

  • STRENGTHS i & i WEAKNESSES

+Elite Agent+ - Cirrus has arisen to the prestige of an agent whose callsign is uttered in whispers. He’s been the most active over recent years within domestic organizations, but his reputation has also grown abroad as a proverbial ‘unicorn,’ to the point of almost unrealistic expectations. After sifting through idle rumor vs substantiated fact, his reputation could be summarized in the form of an operative who excels at deep cover infiltration, high-risk assassinations, and long-term surveilance; along with a wide array of skills that come with the territory.
+Anonymous - A true testament to an operative’s efficacy in the field of espionage is ‘how long can one operate before they get burned?’ By and large, Cirrus’ true identity is still a highly protected secret within Blackwatch, along with his ‘true self’ appearance (as Blackwatch heavily utilizes synthetic disguises to obfuscate the identities of their truly valuable operatives). Outside of a small collection of composite sketches and renderings, all of which varying widely from the other, there is no real record of his true facial appearance outside of Blackwatch’s most secure databases. This affords him a high level of versatility on his assignments.
+One-man Unit+ - From advanced tactical training and strategy, to a razor-sharpened mental acuity within cyberspace and related fields of study, Cirrus has been trained since childhood to be able to depend on his own unique set of skills almost exclusively. This renders him a very potent asset for his handlers within Blackwatch on his own, and collectively improves the effectiveness of any unit he joins on a provisional basis.
+Charismatic - Whether playing the role of a charming playboy, or a manic vagabond - Cirrus is an expert in the art of totally assuming an identity, then playing that part almost perfectly for an extended period of time.

-Hubris- - It’s such a simple word, and there are many within the intelligence community who could claim a similar weakness, but hubris could easily be Cirrus’ Achilles’ heel if left unchecked. While he is still considered a highly effective and dangerous agent, some of his operatives have come close to catastrophic failure due to the sheer amount of overconfidence he possesses in his own abilities. Much of it could easily be justified given how good he is at his job, but there are many cases in which he gets in his own way.
-Indoctrinated- - From near-infancy and throughout the entirety of his adolescence, Cirrus has been indoctrinated into the ideology of the Imperial state. Questioning the merits of the state or the capabilities of the head of state are unthinkable to him, but moreso because he was raised to believe it was not his role to do so. His role is to serve, without question or remorse.
-Psychopath- - Given his upbringing, Cirrus’ is in many ways a classical case of a psychopath. He does not experience emotion as other people do, and instead habitually manipulates the emotions of others to pursue an ulterior motive or goal. To him, there are hardly any boundaries that are ‘off limits’ to cross. If the ends justify the means, he will cross any line. That is not to say he is entirely unredeemable as a person, merely that no one has ever really had the opportunity to get close enough to try.
