Are droids allowed as characters? You know, like IG-88, R2D2, etc. Obviously not the particular characters themselves, but could I create a character that is some kind of droid?

Yes, provided it is either an existing model (Both Canon or Factory created) or if it is not pre-existing then you will have to submit the model yourself. We have plenty of Droid characters, so don't worry
