Character Accents in rp

So i have written a couple different accents with my characters:

Khull: russian
Serg: irish
Jed: Backwater hillbilly redneck
Strider: Female whisperer

Now i have gotten mix reviews on this, some folks find it annoying some love it. Want to see what the rest of the community thought about accents IC wise in star wars and here on Chaos?

Allara Ven: Neutral English accent. Occasionally slips into a Romanian-type when she's really pissed.
Zheng-Mei: Chinese / Korean. But, not broken. Like a Chinese / Korean person who has a very fluent grasp on a non=native language.
Viper: That weird Australian / New Zealander-type accent that Jango Fett has.
Valin Frayus: Somewhere between a refined British accent and a very posh American accent.

Since Kaine has lived in Imperial surroundings for a majority of his life, I've always envisioned him having a slight British swirl to his speech despite his native tongue having an accent that was more Turkish in nature.

If I can't read what you're writing, or your accents make it difficult for me to comprehend, then I find it irritating and I'd rather not see it. If, however, you can portray various accents and dialects appropriately, then it's a great way to create atmosphere.

Honestly, not a whole lot of people are able to do it successfully, even published authors.

(Pro-Tip: Don't turn your dialog into gibberish. Instead, use non-dialog to indicate that the speaker has an accent, like region-specific phrasing/word choices, spelling, etc.)

I've always thought of Thurion's accent as American, but I'd rather let the reader make up their own version. Same goes for Thyrian. ^_^

Thrand is basically just Ned Stark from Game of Thrones, so he's got that thick Northern accent.

Nina I've always thought of as British.

So glad to hear of all of the British accents At least for the men. I married a Brit, so...yeah. The writing of accents is also done in scripts. It helps the actors get the phrases right. It also works for my Audio Chaos project to turn a bunch of threads into radio theatre, so to speak So I welcome it!

I've done a couple accents.
The way I accomplish it mainly is through regional words and such.
As long as I can read and understand what you're writimg, I don't especially care if you put on an accent or not.

Well for me I don't tend to do much accenting outside of doing some phrases or slight changes to words. Being from the Texas/Oklahoma area, I tend to throw that accent into both Gray and Briar. Gray is more of a hodgepodge of different ways of saying things because of his background of always traveling and Briar is that Western accent mixed with a bit of an Irish/Scottish accent.

I have to disagree with you slightly. To an extent, I like accents that are hard to understand. It adds a new level, for me, in how my character will interact when he(I) can't understand them. Just a personal opinion though.

I like to use actors for my characters so people can imagine their voice from movies/shows they've been in to help bring them to life. Un-original it may be for some, but if I can paint the person as real as possible with my words and actions, my work is done.

Connor Harrison - British, like Cumberbatch with a hint of his Khan grit from 'Into Darkness'

Dax Ragnar - British, like Henry Cavill, well spoken.

Aerico - A hint of German and American, splicing Christoph Waltz and Gerard Butler (one his characters).

Joon - French, like Olga Kyrylekno, leading to a more exotic style to her voice

Kyle Amedis - British, the Bale Bruce Wayne voice.

Krius Syonis - American, like Michael Fassbender in character as Magneto - deep, rich and assertive. (Sounds like a coffee!)

Colonel Klink, that's who Dune sounds like.

Syala - A very slight British accent that I like to imagine she picked up from various Jedi in the Sanctum, including her Master.

Juwiela - Not much of an accent, but she has a distinct way of speaking that resembles a lilting, lighthearted swing.

Keira - Distinct Corellian accent that I picture as sounding strongly Midwestern with a touch of something exotic that becomes more apparent when she speaks Mando'a or is among her men.

Jalek - Not any particular accent, but his voice has an apparent swinging drawl that's difficult to pin down.

Sayl - Very slight British accent due to her Chiss half that's only noticeable when she speaks certain words.

Devron - Crude Irish/cockney accent.

Nikola - Same Corellian accent as Keira, but without the exotic touch.

As someone who is English, I find the term 'British accent' does not help me understand how someone speaks at all. It's a small country, but the range of accents is huge. Same with 'American'. And that's not a criticism of others who reference British or American. I probably couldn't determine which part of New Zealand someone was from just from their accent. I guess it's about familiarity.

If I recognise the person that portrays the character, that tends to be my default voice when I read - but that's just me perhaps? If writing phonetically helps you as a writer and also helps the reader, then it can only be a good thing. If it confuses or gets in the way - it will annoy (even if subliminally) - just like a poor accent in a movie can really detract from the performance. Or worse still, the stereotypical accent - the cultured brains of an organisation and the rough-speaking heavy for example.

I remember reading that Stephen King avoids too much description for his characters. He wants the reader to own the character, not the writer - even if that means we all read someone very different. It's the personality that needs to be consistent for us all, not the colour of their hair or their accent.

Kay sounds like...well basically like me as her picture is mine and her and I have a lot of the same traits. Only her voice is slightly higher than my own, speaking more at the level of her eyes instead of her throat. My narration voice that I use is much deeper and comes from the chest. Her accent is standard American, though a little more pronounced. I've fiddled with giving her a slight English accent, but that just feels a little off. Or maybe it's because I don't want my hubby to make fun of me...lol He does so already when I slip and pronounce certain words in his accent.
