  • Origins: Chaldea
  • Average Lifespan: 5 standard years on average, though some venerable members have lived to be as old as 20 years
  • Estimated Population: Planetary
  • Description: Chaldean deer are hoofed ruminant mammals native to Chaldea. Distinguished by their antlers (in males) and for their long fluffy tails, they are known for their beauty, but tend to easily fall prey to predators.

  • Average Height of Adults: 0.51 - 1.0 meters, or 1.7 – 3.9 ft. (Adult, At Shoulder)
  • Average Length of Adults: N/A
  • Skin color: If you were to shave one, its skin would be pink.
  • Hair color: Fur is typically brown, gray, or white. Some may have patterns with colors such as purple, red, or blue on their bodies.
  • Distinctions: Male Chaldean deer possess antlers, whereas females do not. Females also tend to have plainer fur coats for improved camouflage.
  • Races: N/A
  • Force Sensitivity: N/A
Strengths:
  • Chaldean deer have long powerful legs capable of running 48 kmh (30 mph) on average and leaping up to 2.4 meters (8 feet) in the air.
  • They are considered regal creatures, highly prized for their colorful skins and (in males) their antlers, which can be made into other products.
Weaknesses:
  • Dichromatic (two-color) vision with blue and yellow primaries. They cannot see the colors orange and red.
  • Chaldean deer are not known for being all that intelligent, and they often fall prey to the predators who hunt them.
CULTURE
  • Diet: Herbivore; they eat berries, grass, flowers, bulbs, roots, leaves - virtually all parts of typical flora except the stem/trunk. They will avoid thorny plants, which are commonly planted around gardens to keep them out. Plants which are hazardous to humans tend to also be hazardous to Chaldean deer.
  • Communication: Body language and pheromones.
  • Technology level: N/A
  • Religion/Beliefs: N/A
  • General behavior: Chaldean deer are typically seen as gentle grazers, wandering the wilderness and eating as they go. They travel in small familial groups, often consisting mainly of a doe and her fawns. They reproduce quickly and can replenish their numbers within a few months. When faced with danger, they will freeze and lift their long, fluffy tails into the air as a warning to predators that they have been detected. If the danger persists, they will flee.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION

"Dagon probably remembered her excitedly pointing out a Chaldean deer she had spotted grazing in the bushes along the way to Pirivena, as well as her subsequent embarrassment over her childish reaction to a relatively ordinary phenomenon. To be fair, she hadn’t visited her homeworld in a while, and the deer were really pretty. Provided you didn't hit them with your speeder." - Ishani Sibwarra

Let's say you're taking a walk through the forest in Chaldea, when you come upon what looks like a colorful ball of fluff lying in the brush. You move in closer to investigate, and sure enough, it's a terribly pretty Chaldean fawn with white and violet fur.

You wonder, why would its mother leave it all alone like this? Isn't this dangerous? Yet what you are seeing is an incredibly common sight throughout Chaldea, especially in wooded areas. Does will leave their very young fawns alone in a secluded area while they forage for food, returning to retrieve them later. This is supposed to keep them safe from predators, but on a planet which has roving dragons, it isn't the most ideal solution. This has led to a phenomena of misguided sentients (most often tourists) stealing lone fawns in the belief that their mothers are dead or have abandoned them, and then seeking to make these wild animals into pets.

Among native Chaldeans, they are not viewed with the same exotic fascination, but there is a particular reverence held toward the creatures, whose forms are considered pleasing to the eye. In some areas they may be considered unwanted pests (you definitely don't want them getting into your garden, as they will eat any plant they can reach) or hunted as game. Despite the wide variety of predators out there, they are not considered endangered, as their population is widespread and thriving in most areas of the planet; therefore hunting is permitted at certain times of the year. You can be fined a hefty sum for hunting them during the dragon exodus, for instance, when their population is significantly lowered by the flying death machines on their way across the continent...
