OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Name: Chaldean Changelings
  • Designation: Sentient
  • Origins: Chaldea
  • Average Lifespan: Varies depending on lineage, but usually around 500 standard years.
  • Estimated Population: Rare
  • Description: Descended from immigrant changelings who settled on Chaldea centuries ago, this shapeshifting race enjoys an almost mythical status in Chaldean history and literature as mischief-makers, mainly due to their cultural differences and the strange manner in which some of their ancestors integrated themselves into their new society: by swapping their young with the infants of their neighbors shortly after birth.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
  • Breathes: Type I
  • Average Height of Adults: Varies; typically they are no smaller than an Ewok (approximately 1 meter) and no larger than a Wookiee (nearly 3 meters).
  • Average Length of Adults: N/A
  • Skin color: Skin color can be altered, though in their natural forms they are said to have a pale or ashen complexion.
  • Hair color: Hair color can be altered, though in their natural forms they are said to have no hair.
  • Distinctions: Generally speaking, they tend to have the typical distinctions which differentiate human males and females, possessing similar reproductive organs and secondary sexual characteristics, with some variations dependent on their ancestry. Despite the legends built up around them, changelings are not immortal; though many do live for centuries, their bodies mature and grow old and decrepit just as humans do.
  • Races: Here's where things get interesting: Chaldean Changelings are technically not all one species, but a broad term given to several shapeshifting species who immigrated to Chaldea. Their origins can be traced back to the Shi'ido, Clawdites, Homanans, and even species such as Felacatians and Polydroxols. The largest communities of Chaldean Changelings can be divided into two categories:
    • Fairfolk: Commonly found in the largest cities, Fairfolk are the most socially integrated of all changelings. Most people are not even aware that they are changelings, they have assimilated so completely into Chaldean society, and many Fairfolk are racially mixed. Fairfolk should not be confused with the Finfolk, an unrelated cultural group which, ironically, are sometimes mistaken for changelings.
    • Moorchildren: Found mainly in remote, rural areas, moorchildren are isolated and wary of outsiders. They are believed to be descended from the Shi'ido, who evolved the ability to "skinshift" on their homeworld in order to camouflage themselves from predators. Consequently, they are famous for blending in with trees, plants, or taking the forms of wild animals.
  • Force Sensitivity: All - Though it is often very mild or more akin to attunement, virtually all Chaldean Changelings are sensitive to the Force. They mainly use the Force via a form of telepathy, which can help to make their disguises more convincing.
Strengths:
  • Shapeshifting: Generally all changelings have the ability to shapeshift, though the extent of this ability will vary depending on how pure of blood they are. Heavily mixed individuals will likely only be able to slightly alter their size, while the most pure of blood retain the ability to shift from the size of an Ewok to the size of a Wookiee, as well as change their coloring and overall shape, including imitating clothing.
  • Glamoring: An evolutionary trait used to help with making their disguises more convincing, changelings telepathy allows them to influence the perceptions of other beings, such as smell, to cover up any inconsistencies in their appearance.
Weaknesses:
  • Colder Temperatures: The malleable bodies of changelings allow them to shapeshift, but they provide little in the way of insulation. Consequently they are more vulnerable to low temperatures, which can impede their ability to shapeshift or even cause injury, as extreme cold makes their bodies grow hard and brittle. The most pure of blood suffer the most when it snows.
  • Uncanny: Native Chaldeans tend to find changelings eerie and unsettling at best, suspicious and untrustworthy at worst. Most changelings either do their best to blend in with the rest of society, hiding their true nature, or keep to themselves in their isolated communities.
CULTURE
  • Diet: Omnivore; diet usually depends on where they live and other factors, but they can eat most foods humans can and are no less vulnerable to poisons.
  • Communication: Galactic Basic; some communities may have their own dialects which include words and sounds found in Shi'idese, Clawdite, and other alien languages.
  • Technology level: Galactic Standard
  • Religion/Beliefs: Generally up to the individual and/or their community, though many are Potentiates.
  • General behavior:
    • Fairfolk: Most Fairfolk behave like typical Chaldeans. That said, there is some lingering cultural ambiguity towards them, as they can be stereotyped as deceptive or untrustworthy. The name Fairfolk comes from the popular belief (originating in literature and legends) that exceptionally attractive and charismatic people must be changelings, as they are able to use their powers to make themselves seem more appealing to others.
    • Moorchildren: While they usually keep to themselves, Moorchildren do interact in some unique ways with outsiders, most notably in the historical practice of secretly swapping their infant young with that of non-changelings. This was usually during times of hardship in an attempt to preserve the child's life, but for obvious reasons, it can cause conflict between the Moorchildren and other Chaldeans, so it has become exceedingly rare in recent decades. One is more likely to hear about a case in which someone falsely accused a Moorchild of stealing their baby than an actual swap. The term "changeling" has entered the Chaldean lexicon to refer to children who misbehave or who are strange/unusual, though it is not always a pejorative.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Beginning sometime prior to the Gulag Era, changelings arrived on Chaldea. Immigrating from various corners of the galaxy, they founded their own communities on the new world, bringing elements of their homelands to the broader culture.

As with any group living in a new place, their integration was not without issue, though the nature of their being shapeshifters - a species type notoriously mistrusted and misunderstood - certainly exacerbated tensions. Clashes arose between changelings and non-changelings, with the former developing a reputation for deception and mischief. By the time of the Chaldean Civil War, however, most changelings had assimilated into the broader society, or retreated into isolated communities where they are free to live as they please among others of their own kind.

I kid, I kid. Combining multiple shapechangers into a single descendant species is an unusual idea, but given their morphous biology it could work. As usual, you've covered all the bases well. Enjoy fairyland, and don't eat that peasant girl unless you want to go Mawite. 'Cause those changelings sure look like they want to.
