  • Description: Ceireans were an aquatic repto-mammal native to Pamarthe that could be found on several other worlds across the galaxy. They were popular animals for zoos and aquariums due to their friendly nature and unnervingly cute forms. They were preyed upon occasionally by many of Pamarthe's larger predators and were commonly hunted for black ivory horns and because they were a popular food of sailors both raw and preserved. Despite their large bellies, short arms, short legs, and lazy nature, they were adept at swimming and catching fish which was their main source of food. During the winter months when ice covered the waters around their shores they became extremely dangerous for humans as the hibernation of fish turned their predatory instinct to anything that moved above the ice. Their round bellies became slim, lean muscle during the winter and weeping months allowing them to crash through the ice with their strong horns.

During the non-winter months they had very round bellies which stored fat reserves for winter. During the winter months they lost their bellies and became lean, their muscle unburdened by the extra fat. They had rows of sharp teeth and milky white eyes that had a second clear eyelid that allowed them to see unimpeded under water. Their whiskers allowed them to feel changes in temperature, air and water pressure, and could track electromagnetic pulses given off by lifeforms. Their nose was also very astute. Their black ivory claws weren't sharp enough to rip through durasteel, but could easily rip open the belly of an unwary, unarmored hunter.

CULTURE
  • Diet: Carnivore
  • Communication: Barks, yips, hisses, vocalizations
  • Technology level: N/A
  • Religion/Beliefs: N/A
  • Cultural Signifigance: Ceireans were hunted for their black ivory horns which were used for the hilts of Pamarthen Honor Blades and a variety of other crafts. They were hunted in all seasons except for winter and the weeping, the period of heavy storms at the end of Winter that led into spring. During winter they were considered one of Pamarthe's most dangerous creatures and accounted for more human deaths per year than both the Pamarthen Lion and Jialgheer either due to direct attack or through indirect means such as breaking ice flows and causing people to drown or freeze to death.
  • General behavior: Throughout most of the year ceireans lazed about on Pamarthen coasts across the planet, waddling from their huddled groups and into the ocean to catch fish, squid, octopus, and crill. They use this time to stock up on fats for the winter months, producing the large, round, adorable bellies that give them their reputation as lazy and cute. They lived in massive colonies of hundreds of individuals though during the breeding season, winter, they became fiercely individual with both males and females fighting one another for the right to breed. During these months they shed their fat layers to keep them warm, leaving only the thick muscle behind. Unburdened they swam faster, hunted more frequently, and searched for mates. However, due to fish hibernation cycles, they often lurked below the ice, waiting for sheepo or storm eun to pass before breaking the ice with their horns and surprising their prey.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Ceirean, also called Pamarthen Water Dragons when found off-world, were first discovered when colonizers came to Pamarthe. Initially thought to be docile creatures, they were commonly hunted for their meat and blubber reserves. The species was very successful at keeping undesirable fish populations down and so was often used off-world to clean up invasive species. This however, obviously had its own drawbacks. As a result the species is widespread throughout the Galaxy. They weren't much loved creatures to the people of Pamarthe, but were seen as just another one of its many dangers. They were commonly preyed upon by Pamarthen Lions, Pamarthen Drakes, and other large predators of the land and sea.

Hi Thalia Senn Thalia Senn ! This is an interesting (and adorable) submission! I think a few edits are in order to comply with the template requirements, which I'll lay out below:

  • For 'Canon', 'Permissions', and 'Links' in the 'Out of Character Information' section, please enter N/A if these are not being utilized.
  • For 'Distinctions' under 'Physical Information', the template requests a description of the "unique physical traits that define what they are and set them apart from more common species like humans." What you've entered here does not match this guidance; please update per the template's instructions (you can refer back to the original template here, for your convenience).
  • For 'Religion/Beliefs' under 'Culture', the template asks for any prominent religion observed by the species, or a set of beliefs. The information you entered does not match this guidance.
Please let me know when this is ready for re-review :)

Hi Thalia Senn Thalia Senn - thank you for your edits and explanation. While I understand where you're coming from, you really aren't describing 'culture' in that field, either. This information reads as a mixture of history and general behaviors. I think it could go in either one of those sections, but the template instructions (linked previously) are clear as to what information belongs in the Religion/Beliefs field and this doesn't match that description. You may add an additional field if you feel there is a better descriptive label for the information. If the species doesn't have any a religion or beliefs, you can enter N/A in that field.

Additionally, an item I missed in my initial review: please link Pamarthe in the General Information section.

Please tag me when you have completed the requested edits.

Natasi Fortan Natasi Fortan a little overzealously anal considering I've done like half a dozen subs that way....but edited.

Hi Thalia Senn Thalia Senn - please take a moment to consult the Codex Standardized Rules, which I've linked here for your convenience, where you will note that the Codex system "will not base judgments on precedents or the approval of prior submissions." You may also find it helpful to familiarize yourself with the requirement to "Maintain a polite and constructive dialogue with Codex Staff" towards the bottom of the General Guidelines. :)

Thank you for making the requested edits. This is approved pending secondary review.
