Roon was a mess, at least the site of the former headquarters for the Knights Obsidian. In an effort to reduce the potential threat, Gerwald had been hard at work to move the headquarters of the Knights Obsidian. He hoped to take them to Stewjon where he could rebuild the order, but decisions had yet to be made. Until such a decision was final, Gerwald found himself traveling between Naboo and Roon.

Today his visit had one sole purpose. He would personally assess the Knights which were now under his command. The new Lord Commander had made the decision to be more personable. Many of the others before him seemed to keep a distance, they did not seem to know those whose deaths they ordered. Gerwald wanted to change that. He would know the talents and skills of each member under his charge.

One such was the brother of someone Gerwald held close to his heart. Var Talon, the name was clear as day on the roster. His relation to the Exarch which saved his life would not spare him any measure Gerwald would use to test the Echani. The Lupine was determined to be even harder on him perhaps because he knew what the Talon name brought with it. Talon was likely capable already, but how capable was he? Would he serve as a leader among his fellow Knights, or would he simply be another soldier?

Gerwald sat on the steps of the ruins which had once been a thriving center of learning for the Knights Obsidian. That had all changed in an instant when the Eye was activated. Every place the Knights Obsidian called home had been destroyed at once. Yet, Gerwald found there was no better place to assess this particular Knight. He wanted to watch. Gerwald wanted to study. Most of all, he wanted to evoke emotion.

Would he?

SUMMONS

There was very little that Var knew about Gerwald Lechner Gerwald Lechner .

Outside of the fact that he was the Lord Commander and that he had some sort of canine thing going on, the man was a mystery. But, the curtain would be lifted ever so slightly with the day's events. From on high did a summons come for the Knight - to meet the Lord Commander before the broken stairs of their headquarters. The Cataclysm had done a number on the locale, and though construction efforts were underway, it was still a tripping hazard every step of the way. That was all the justification that Var needed for taking his time in ascending the steps.

But, mostly, he wanted to get his last few drags in before business called. A cigarra rested between his lips, filling his lungs with the succulent taste of Nar Shaddaa. The brand wasn't of any quality to speak of, but it certainly whetted the man's appetite. The Lupine would know that Var arrived for two reasons: the stench of his habit and his presence in the Force. Compared to the so-called Dread Queen, Var was a far smaller bucket of water. Yet, his name carried weight 'round these parts. Personally, the Echani hated relying upon his sibling's reputation.

And so he kept the relation to his damn self. Unless it was squeezed out of him. Srina had made her own life here, so would he. Of his own volition and way.

Once within a stone's throw of the Lord Commander, Var extinguished the cigarra upon the heel of his boot. The remains were pocketed, for there were a few final puffs that could be pulled from its form later. Sliding both hands, casually, within his bomber jacket, the Echani leveled his gaze upon the Lupine.

"You called?"

Gerwald could smell the smoke on him. Interesting. He would have not thought a Talon would partake in such things. Granted the only Talon he knew was Srina, and the impression he was getting from Var was that he was nothing like her. Being an Echani, however, he expected that there would be decent skill in combat. That was needed. There were younger knights, squires, which would need to be taught, and Gerwald could not teach them all. He needed to know the status of his knights, and this was the best way to do that.

“I did call.”

Gerwald smirked as he pointed to the pocket where the rest of cigara was kept.

“I can smell it still,” he tapped his nose. “Wolf nose… gotta love it.”

He crossed the distance to greet the Echani, extending his hand as was the traditional human custom.

“I am going to get to the point. Our order has been decimated. We need to rebuild, and I need to know who we have. These ruins here, they are a visual of what we are now. I need to know who I count on to help us rebuild, and where they fit best.”

Gerwald pulled his saber hilt from his waist.

“You’re an Echani, and I want to test a theory.”

Gerwald ignited his blade, and took his opening stance.

“Fight me.”

FIGHT

At first, the Lord Commander opened their 'conversation' with humor. He tapped upon his nose, claiming that he could still smell the cigarra residing in the Echani's pocket. Wolf nose. Heightened senses. Var made a small mental note regarding that - a facet of his superior's natural state of being. It was a good thing too, for what laid on the horizon would require observing everything about the man. He extended his hand in greeting, and Var accepted the gesture. His dominant hand rendered a firm shake, briefly, before being returned to the pocket of his bomber jacket.

"I'll try and keep that in mind, don't want to offend those nostrils." His words were uttered with a light smirk. Brevity. Before the meat and potatoes were set upon the table. Gerwald spoke on the state of the Knighthood. How it had been decimated. How he wanted to take stock of who was left - who he could rely on. The meaning between the words was not lost upon the Echani.

Did he know about Var's newfound freedom now that the Malverns were long gone? Was he attempting to discern what Var would do with that freedom? Would he commit, like his sibling?

And then his saber was pulled from his waist. He wanted to test a theory. Var's eyebrow rose. Instinct flared. And just as the saber ignited, the Echani leapt back a few paces. Fight me. A challenge posed. Well chit, if he knew it was a brawl, he'd have left the jacket back home. He'd be damned if it got scuffed up. "Alright." He said, accepting the challenge. Var raised his hand, denoting that he needed just a moment. He paused, only long enough to shrug off his jacket, revealing the tank-top underneath. The leather was settled upon one of the ruined stones, before Var reached for his waist.

He produced a fighting knife - a physical blade, not the lightsaber hilt which hung from his waist. An interesting choice, as it would require getting in close. "Ready." He breathed, sucking in a breath. His mind was centered. Focus. For a man chosen to lead the Obsidians, a battle in the Force would probably end in Gerwald's favor. To win, Var would need to outsmart the man. Wits. Tactics. Guile. Those would be the equalize. Thus, the Echani reached out with the Force. He maintained a defensive stance as he did - and behind the wolf did a crumbling wall begin to fall. Var rocked the foundations, causing the structure to collapse - sending stones hurtling down towards Gerwald's back.

And as they began to tumble, Var moved forward. In his mind, the collapse would force the wolf to move - and in that motion, he could close the gap.

Game on.

The wall behind him began to rattle, and the force master felt the vibrations at his feet. Gerwald smirked as he recognized the thinking. Var was trying to outsmart the wolf and dictate the course of the fight.

It was smart.

Almost.

Gerwald did not have to move himself physically to avoid the stones from crashing upon him. All the Lord Commander had to do was use the force to send the boulders flying at the Echani which now ran toward him. The thing which Var had intended as a distraction was now Gerwald’s weapon.

The force added an element to battle the lupine had learned to account for. One thing which was certain, battling Srina Talon Srina Talon was something which would have the wolf always at the ready for what seemed impossible. There were many times over the white haired Exarch would have killed him had their spar been to the death. She certainly had taught Gerwald a valuable lesson. Use what the opponent gives you.

With a smirk on his face, Gerwald continued to send the rocks flying at the Echani as he backed into the wave behind him. If he needed to, Gerwald would erect a barrier to keep them from overtaking him.

FIGHT

Dammit.

Upon realizing that the crumbling wall had been turned into ammunition, the Echani spared only an instant to think the expression. His initial tactic was adjusted immediately - yet he continued to advance. The stones and debris were constantly launched in his direction, forcing Var to will himself forward. His pace increased. His breathing became far more efficient. By the Force he was able to see as though time itself had slowed. He leapt and maneuvered, braving the stones with what would appear ease. Such was the nature of his Focus.

In due time, he had bridged the gap and was within dueling distance of the Lord Commander. Within this range, he felt confident. He felt as though he could excel. However, judging from how quickly he turned the crumbling wall against him, Var continued to have his guard raised. With a small leap, the Echani brought the blade down in a vicious arc - as if to behead the man in one clean horizontal motion. The twist of his form, however, made it so that his offhand was conveniently reaching backwards.

He was steadying himself. Or perhaps bracing.

Whichever the case - Var was attempting to remain a few steps ahead. If he would succeed remained to be seen.
