OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To create a jamming beam to be mounted on starfighters and on smaller emplacements for Breshig War Forge Consolidated, Strill Securities and select others.
  • Canon Link: N/A.
  • Permissions: N/A.
  • Primary Source: Jamming Beam, HJB-04 Heavy Jamming Beam Emplacement.
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Manda Compatibility: Should the projector somehow fire at a friendly ship with the Manda tactical battlenet module, because of its compatibility with the Manda tactical module, the friendly ship will be unaffected.
STRENGTHS
  • Powerful: A single heavy jamming beam projector can create powerful enough interference when targeting enemy craft smaller than corvette size that most craft experience significant delays in targeting and acquisition from the interference generated, and craft corvette and larger can experience an increase in false positive contacts picked up by up to 1% when generally causing interference, but can switch the pattern of interference generated to slow down targeting and acquisition
  • Cumulative Effect: The effect of having multiple heavy jamming beam projectors on capital grade targets can notably increase the number of potential false positive contacts that a capital grade target's sensor system might pick up. This is most notable when a squadron of craft attempt to jam a target's point-defenses when on an attack run. Enemy fighter craft are usually all but unable to utilize their targeting and tracking systems when under the effects of multiple jamming beams.
  • Manda Compatibility: Should the projector somehow fire at a friendly ship with the Manda tactical battlenet module, because of its compatibility with the Manda tactical module, the friendly ship will be unaffected.
  • Long Range: Under ideal circumstances, the projector has an extremely long range, and can potentially affect hostile vessels at a great distance from its host vessel. This potentially allows the host ship to either fire the first shot, or to dramatically decrease the amount of incoming fire from its opponent.
WEAKNESSES
  • Power Hungry: The beams are power hungry, and require a powerful reactor to keep them functioning, as such any ship that mounts one of these projectors needs to either mount them in numbers that their reactor can sustain or have a powerful enough reactor to support these weapons. Most starfighters can only handle a single projector. Additionally, power fluctuations such as those caused by ion weapons can prevent use of this weapon.
  • Line of Sight: The projector needs to maintain line of sight to its target to affect it, anything that gets in the way from debris to other craft can depending on the size of the object as compared to the diameter of the beam either drastically affect its effectiveness or nullify the projector effects completely.
  • Stellar Phenomenon: Stellar phenomenon such as dust clouds, nebulae and the like tend to interfere with the jamming beam, drastically reducing the projector's range and effectiveness.
  • Indiscriminate: The jamming beam will potentially affect whatever ship that it's oriented towards, friendly ships included should they not be equipped with a 'Manda' tactical battlenet module, or should for some reason that ship's module become disconnected from the network or otherwise non-functional.
DESCRIPTION
"Client complained one of his got tagged by one of our jamming beams. Maybe he should consider that if his pilot wasn't di'kutla enough to waltz straight into our firing lines it wouldn't have happened."
- Strill Securities ace Aenarr Kyrr
The HJP-03P is the scaled down version of the company's HJP-03 heavy jamming beam, though unlike the much larger emplacement the HJP-02P isn't designed solely for use against capital ship targets. The HJP-03P is designed for mounting on starfighters for use against other starfighters as well as lessening the amount of incoming point-defense fire from capital ships. The HJB-03P and the successor to the HJB-03, the HJP-04, represent a departure from reliance on outside sources for subcomponents, and are fast replacing externally sourced jamming beams on production fighter craft.
A single heavy jamming beam projector can create powerful enough interference when targeting enemy craft smaller than corvette size that most craft experience significant delays in targeting and acquisition from the interference generated, and craft corvette and larger can experience an increase in false positive contacts picked up by up to 1% when generally causing interference, but can switch the pattern of interference generated to slow down targeting and acquisition. This effect on target is compounded by multiple projectors.
To prevent easy analysis of the pattern of interference, the projector varies the pattern of interference on a pseudo-random basis, making it difficult for sensor operators or automated systems to analyze this and negate it in a meaningful amount of time. Additionally, the beam has a considerably longer range when compared to most weapons carried on starfighters, and as such can be used from a longer distance with compatible targeting systems, skill, and the right circumstances.
That said, the beams are power hungry, and require a powerful reactor to keep them functioning. As such, powerful fluctuations, such as those caused by ion weapons, can prevent use of the projector. The projector also needs clear line of sight to it's target. Anything that get's in the way, from debris to other craft can, depending on the size of the object as compared to the diameter of the beam, either drastically affect its effectiveness or nullify it's effects completely. Stellar phenomenon such as dust clouds, nebulae and the like also tend to interfere with the hamming beam, drastically reducing the projector's range and effectiveness. Finally, the beam will potentially affect whatever ship that it's oriented towards. Friendly ships that aren't equipped with a functioning 'Manda' tactical battlenet module are not exempt.
